Taxonomy & naming

Jay R. Stauffer Jr. described this species in 1988 in the journal Copeia — specifically in "Three new rock-dwelling cichlids (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Malawi, Africa" (Copeia 1988 no. 3: 663–668) — naming it Pseudotropheus flavus from material collected at Chinyankwazi Island, Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa), Malawi, at depths of 8–20 metres. The holotype is deposited at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History (USNM 290929), with paratypes at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1987.11.18.3–7, five specimens) and USNM 290930 (four specimens).

The species was placed in Pseudotropheus for nearly three decades, though hobbyists had long informally called it "Pseudotropheus elongatus sp. 'Dinghani'" before its formal description. The genus-level picture changed in 2016 when Shan Li, Ad Konings, and Jay R. Stauffer Jr. published a revision of the Pseudotropheus elongatus species group in Zootaxa (4168(2): 353–381). That paper described a new genus, Chindongo Li, Konings & Stauffer 2016, whose name derives from a local Malawian word for 'small, rock-dwelling fish', and transferred flavus and eleven other elongate mbuna species into it. The type species of Chindongo is Chindongo bellicosus. Chindongo is diagnosed by, among other characters, the presence of bicuspid teeth in the anterior outer row of both jaws, three to six rows of teeth in the premaxilla and dentary, a flank melanin pattern of vertical bars (without horizontal elements at any developmental stage), and a moderately to steeply sloped vomer with a narrow rostral tip. The current valid combination, Chindongo flavus (Stauffer, 1988), is accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes and the IUCN Red List.

In the trade the species is sometimes still sold under the pre-revision name Pseudotropheus flavus, and occasionally under the name "Dinghani" or "Pseudotropheus Dinghani" — a reference to Dinghani Island, an alternate rendering sometimes confused in the older literature. No formally accepted English common name exists; Maidenhead Aquatics and a few UK retailers use "Dinghani elongatus", but this name has not been taken up more broadly in the hobby.

Morphology

Chindongo flavus is a small, moderately elongate cichlid with the compressed body plan typical of the elongatus group. FishBase records a maximum of 3 in standard length (SL) for unsexed adults; the IUCN assessment by Konings (2018) gives 3.5 in total length (TL) as the reported maximum. These figures are consistent with a fish generally encountered at 2.5–3 in TL in the wild and in the aquarium trade, making it one of the smaller members of the genus.

Sexual dichromatism is striking and unambiguous. Breeding and dominant males develop a bright yellow to lemon-yellow back, upper flank, and caudal fin, overlaid with faint to moderately dark vertical banding and a light blue or blue-grey on the lower body and face; the combination produces a clean two-tone appearance that is instantly recognizable. Egg spots on the anal fin are well-developed, pale orange to yellow. Females and subordinate males retain the drab juvenile pattern: an olive-brown to grey-brown body with diffuse dark bars, closely resembling the coloration of many other female elongate mbuna. This extreme female conservatism is consistent across the genus and means that females are essentially cryptic against rocks in the 23–66 ft zone where the species lives.

The original description by Stauffer (1988) records the holotype at 3 in SL; meristic counts include 8 anal-fin rays, 10–11 gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial, 2–4 gill rakers on the first epibranchial, 3–4 rows of teeth on the lower jaw, 3–5 rows on the premaxilla, and 9–11 teeth in the outer row of the lower jaw. The body depth runs about 29–32% of SL in the type series, placing it in the moderate-depth range for the group — notably deeper-bodied than elongatus itself.

Habitat

Chindongo flavus is known from a single location: Chinyankwazi Island, a small rocky island in the south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi, within the boundaries of Lake Malawi National Park. The IUCN Red List puts the species' estimated area of occupancy at 2 mi² and extent of occurrence at 12 mi², making it one of the most tightly range-restricted cichlids in the entire lake. No populations have ever been documented at any other locality, despite decades of systematic mbuna surveys across the lake by Ribbink et al. (1983) and subsequent workers.

At Chinyankwazi, the species inhabits the rocky shoreline at depths of 23–66 ft (IUCN assessment; Stauffer 1988 gives 26–66 ft for the type series collection depth). It occurs preferentially near small to medium-sized rocks and boulders, where adequate territorial caves exist. The substrate is mixed rock and sediment — the IUCN notes the habitat as "sediment-rich" rocky environs, distinguishing it from the pristine, sediment-free rocky habitats preferred by many other mbuna. This tolerance of some sediment may explain why the species persists at an island that does not have the clearest rock surfaces.

Lake Malawi's chemistry is well-characterized: the lake is hard, alkaline, and thermally stratified, with surface water temperatures in the range of 73–84 °F (varying seasonally and by depth), pH typically 7.7–8.6, and conductivity around 200–260 µS/cm. FishBase records the species' tolerated range as pH 7.4–8.4, hardness 7–30 dH, and 73–81 °F. At 23–66 ft depth — within the epilimnion and upper metalimnion — water is warm and well-oxygenated year-round.

Feeding

Chindongo flavus is best described as a planktivore-scraper with flexible trophic behavior governed by sex and social status. FishBase assigns a trophic level of approximately 3.4, notably higher than strict aufwuchs-grazers and consistent with a diet that includes small zooplankton.

The primary feeding mode, documented by Konings and summarized in the IUCN assessment, involves schools of foraging individuals hovering about one metre above the rocky substrate and picking plankton from the open water column. These foraging aggregations can be conspicuous and were specifically noted as "large schools" by Ribbink et al. (1983), who surveyed the island in the early 1980s. The open-water hovering behaviour is unusual for an mbuna and places this species closer to the feeding ecology of some Copadichromis or Nyassachromis than to a typical aufwuchs-scraper like Labeotropheus.

Territory-holding males show a secondary feeding mode: scraping algae and aufwuchs from the surfaces of rocks within their defended area. This dual strategy — schooling planktivore when not breeding, territorial aufwuchs-feeder when holding a cave — is reflected in Konings' natural-history notes for the species and is echoed in Maidenhead Aquatics' care data recommending a diet "primarily vegetarian" in captivity. In practice the species is an omnivore that tilts toward algae and small invertebrates, with the planktivorous component making it nutritionally flexible compared with more committed aufwuchs specialists.

Mating

Like virtually all mbuna, Chindongo flavus is a polygynous lekking-style mouthbrooder in which dominant males establish and fiercely defend rock cave territories and court multiple females sequentially. The territorial male intensifies his yellow coloration during courtship — a cue that females use for mate assessment — and actively displays to ripe females who enter his territory.

Cichlid-forum.com discussion threads, representing accumulated keeper experience, consistently describe the species as strongly territorial and aggressive, particularly among conspecifics and toward fish of similar elongate body shape or yellow coloration. Multiple independent keepers report that a dominant male will make "a project" of targeting specific tankmates and that aggression escalates significantly during spawning readiness. These reports align with the energetic territorial defense expected in a species whose natural range consists of a single small island with high within-population competition for cave territories.

Ribbink et al. (1983) noted that the large foraging schools observed at Chinyankwazi Island had already declined by the time of their survey, and the IUCN assessment (Konings 2018) notes that the schools apparent in 1983 have since disappeared — suggesting that population density has fallen considerably, which may further intensify competition among remaining males for the limited rocky substrate.

Breeding

Chindongo flavus breeds in the typical mbuna manner: it is a maternal mouthbrooder in which the female alone broods the fertilized eggs and larvae. Spawning follows the egg-spot fertilization mechanism shared by all haplochromine cichlids: the female deposits eggs onto a cleaned spawning site, picks them up immediately into her buccal cavity, and then pecks at the egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin, ingesting milt in the process to fertilize the clutch.

Breeding in captivity has been well-documented by hobbyists. Maidenhead Aquatics (Fishkeeper.co.uk) reports an incubation period of up to 25 days, after which the fry are held for a further few days before release; at Lake Malawi water temperatures (73–81 °F) this figure is consistent with the 21–28 day range typical for elongate mbuna. Clutch sizes and exact fry counts have not been published in the primary literature for this species; genus-typical clutch sizes for Chindongo spp. of comparable size run in the range of 10–30 fry per brood, though independent keepers on cichlid-forum.com report broods in the aquarium confirming successful reproduction across multiple generations.

The male's aggression toward the holding female and toward other tank inhabitants increases during and after spawning; experienced keepers recommend a harem setup (one male to three or more females) to distribute harassment, and a tank of at least 47 in in length to provide sufficient territory separation.

In the aquarium

Chindongo flavus is an uncommon mbuna in the hobby — it surfaces occasionally through specialist cichlid importers, typically under the old name Pseudotropheus flavus or the trade name "Dinghani elongatus", but rarely appears in mainstream fish stores. Keepers who do obtain it are working with a genuine rarity, and that scarcity makes sourcing clean, uncontaminated stock (i.e., not hybridized with similar elongate mbuna) one of the first concerns. Given the species' restricted single-island origin, maintaining genetic integrity matters both to the hobbyist and, in a modest but real sense, to conservation.

Tank size should not be underestimated. Males are ferociously territorial and will monopolize the best cave sites against all comers. A minimum of 47 in in length is the floor for a single-species setup, and 59 in is more appropriate for a small colony or a mixed-mbuna display. The tank should be stacked with rocks — large boulders and flat slabs arranged to create an abundance of caves, overhangs, and visual barriers. Dense rockwork is not decorative here; it is functional, because subordinate fish and females need lines of sight broken constantly to survive a dominant male's aggression. A bare or lightly decorated tank with this species will result in casualties. Sand or fine gravel substrate is appropriate; the species does tolerate some sediment, as noted in its natural habitat description, but a clean sandy bottom is preferable for long-term fish health.

Water chemistry should match Lake Malawi conditions throughout: temperature 73–81 °F, pH 7.8–8.4, total hardness in the range of 10–25 dH. Buffering capacity is important — stable alkalinity prevents pH crashes overnight, which Lake Malawi fish tolerate poorly. Crushed coral in the filter or as a substrate additive provides inexpensive pH buffering. Excellent filtration and a rigorous water-change schedule (25–30% weekly) are standard for any mbuna setup; the species produces moderate bioload and is sensitive to elevated nitrates over the long term.

Diet is a critical husbandry point that many keepers get wrong with this species. Although Chindongo flavus is nutritionally flexible in the wild — hovering to pick plankton as well as grazing aufwuchs — captive specimens fed high-protein foods (bloodworms, beef heart, prawn-heavy commercial foods) are prone to Malawi bloat, a potentially fatal digestive condition linked to gut microbiome disruption in vegetarian cichlids. The core diet should be a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, supplemented occasionally with blanched spinach or pea. Small live or frozen invertebrates (daphnia, brine shrimp) can be offered sparingly as a protein top-up but should not be a dietary staple. Keepers who follow a predominantly plant-based feeding regimen report robust fish with good color development.

Tankmate selection demands care. Chindongo flavus is best kept with other Lake Malawi mbuna of broadly similar size and aggression, but the elongate yellow-male body form triggers disproportionate aggression from the dominant male toward anything that remotely resembles a rival. Other yellow or elongate mbuna (Pseudotropheus elongatus complex, Cynotilapia spp.) make poor companions. Robust mbuna of contrasting shape and coloration — Labidochromis caeruleus, Metriaclima zebra, Iodotropheus sprengerae — fare better in a well-sized, heavily rocked tank. A harem structure of one male to three or four females is strongly recommended for the species itself; with only one or two females, male harassment during courtship and spawning is severe enough to kill the female. Species tank setups with a single male and multiple females in a 59 in aquarium are arguably the most stable long-term arrangement. Breeding in captivity follows the standard maternal mouthbrooding pattern described in the Breeding section; the female should ideally be removed to a separate tank to hold her brood undisturbed, as stressed mouthbrooders frequently spit and swallow fry. Overall the species rates as intermediate in difficulty — manageable for an experienced mbuna keeper who can provide the space, rockwork, and dietary discipline the fish requires, but not a beginner's cichlid.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Chindongo flavus as Near Threatened (NT) under criterion B1a+2a, as evaluated by Ad Konings (2018; errata version 2019). This assessment acknowledges that the species meets the area thresholds for Critically Endangered under criterion B — it is known from a single location, an area of occupancy of just 2 mi², and an extent of occurrence of 12 mi² — but judges that current threats are unlikely to push the species to CR or Extinct in the short term. Population trend is listed as decreasing: the large foraging schools documented by Ribbink et al. (1983) are no longer observed at Chinyankwazi Island, though the species remains common there. A previous assessment (2017) had rated it Vulnerable.

The primary identified threat is water pollution from domestic and urban wastewater, including fishermen's waste, at and around the island. Notably, the entire known population falls within the boundaries of Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning 91–100% of the wild population has in-place protection — a significant conservation buffer. The species is no longer an active target of the ornamental fish trade, though it was previously exported under the trade name "Pseudotropheus Dinghani".

The wider lake context matters. Chavula et al. (2023, Journal of Great Lakes Research 49(6): 102241) document the full range of pressures on the Lake Malawi basin: declining water levels, increasing sedimentation from shoreline deforestation, eutrophication near populated shores, overfishing of commercial species (particularly chambo, Oreochromis spp.), and climate-driven warming that is reducing thermal stratification and mixing patterns. For a species restricted to a single rocky island, sedimentation covering rock surfaces and rising baseline temperatures in the 23–66 ft zone are the most relevant chronic pressures beyond immediate pollution. The lake's rocky-shore mbuna community more broadly is under documented stress: Ribbink et al. (1983) established the baseline diversity of the rocky shores, and subsequent surveys have noted contraction of species ranges and reduced school sizes at disturbed localities. Chindongo flavus, confined to one site with no documented dispersal to nearby islands, has no population refugia if conditions at Chinyankwazi Island deteriorate.
