Taxonomy & naming
Chindongo longior belongs to the genus Chindongo, erected in 2016 by Shan Li, Ad Konings, and Jay Stauffer in a revision of the old Pseudotropheus elongatus species complex (published in Zootaxa), which pulled a cluster of slender, torpedo-shaped mbuna out of the catch-all genus Pseudotropheus. That same revision both formally established the new genus and described several new species alongside it, several sharing the elongate body form that gives the group its name. Chindongo longior's own epithet, the Latin comparative "longior" (longer), directly reflects this shared body plan, distinguishing it from relatively shorter-bodied relatives in the same species group. The genus name Chindongo derives from a Chichewa vernacular term for the small, rock-associated fishes of the lake. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the species' currently accepted valid name.
Morphology
Chindongo longior has the elongate, sub-cylindrical body typical of its genus — noticeably more slender than the deep-bodied mbuna such as Maylandia or Tropheops that share its rocky habitat — with a small, slightly subterminal mouth built for combing algae from rock. As a small mbuna it likely reaches roughly 3–3.5 in as an adult, in keeping with other Chindongo species. Sexual dichromatism is expected to be present, following the genus pattern of vertically barred flanks and more intense colour in breeding males, but the specific colour details of this species are not confidently documented here.
Habitat
The species is documented from sites along the northern Malawian shore, including Higga Reef, Puulu, and Thumbi Point, a stretch of rocky coast typical of mbuna habitat. As with all Chindongo it is essentially confined to rock and rarely, if ever, crosses stretches of open sand, so populations at different reefs along this coast are functionally isolated from one another — the same pattern of reef-by-reef divergence that has driven so much of the lake's mbuna diversity. Water conditions follow the lake's usual profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, well oxygenated in the shallow, wave-washed rocky zone this genus favours.
Feeding
Chindongo longior is an aufwuchs grazer, in keeping with the genus, cropping the algal turf, diatoms, and cyanobacteria coating sunlit rock surfaces at a low angle with its fine, closely set teeth. As with other Chindongo species, feeding is territorial: an individual maintains and defends a productive patch of algae rather than foraging widely, since a well-tended patch yields a more reliable food supply than contested, undefended ground shared with rival grazers.
Mating
Chindongo longior follows the polygynous, lek-like mating system typical of Lake Malawi mbuna, with no lasting pair bond. Males hold small breeding territories on the rocks, intensify in colour, and court passing females with quivering displays; a receptive female enters the territory to spawn on the rock surface the male has cleared and defended. Breeding
As in all Chindongo and essentially all Lake Malawi mbuna, Chindongo longior is a maternal mouthbrooder. The female takes her eggs into her mouth immediately after laying, is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, and takes in milt in the process that fertilises the clutch she already carries. She broods the eggs and fry for roughly three weeks, largely without feeding, before releasing free-swimming young into cover. Clutch sizes in this genus tend to be small, often only a few dozen eggs or fewer given the modest body size of most Chindongo species, and there is no paternal care.

Chindongo longior is a minor presence in the trade compared with well-known genus-mates such as Chindongo demasoni, and where kept it follows the standard small-mbuna template. A tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand suits this genus well, providing the broken sightlines and bolt-holes that reduce aggression among tankmates. Water should mirror the lake — warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly pH 7.7 to 8.6 — and prolonged soft or acidic conditions cause chronic stress in Malawi cichlids. A single male with several females is the standard low-stress ratio, since males of this genus, despite their small size, can be disproportionately pugnacious. Diet should be spirulina- or vegetable-based, since excess protein predisposes mbuna to bloat.
