Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis mbenjii was described by Ad Konings in 1990, in a paper presenting six new Malawi cichlids in the magazine Tropical Fish Hobbyist (volume 38, number 11, pages 110–129). The type series came from Mbenji Island in Lake Malawi at depths of 8 to 15 metres; the holotype (BMNH 1990.4.9.18) and nine paratypes (BMNH 1990.4.9.19–27) are held in the Natural History Museum, London. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid as Copadichromis mbenjii Konings, 1990, and notes a common orthographic error, the single-i spelling "mbenji," which the IUCN also flags — the correct epithet carries two i's. The fish has been recognized in the major regional treatments since, including Maréchal's Copadichromis account in the CLOFFA checklist (1991), Stauffer & Sato (2002), Chisambo & Snoeks (2004), and Konings' own Malawi Cichlids in their Natural Habitat. It sits in Copadichromis, the genus Eccles and Trewavas erected in their 1989 revision of the Malawian haplochromines, within the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Konings places it at the centre of an informal "Copadichromis mbenjii group" of closely related, three-spotted utaka. The genus name combines the Greek kopas, kopados ("carved") with chromis, the classical perch-like fish name long used as the standard suffix for cichlid genera; the species epithet is a toponym for the type locality, Mbenji Island.
Morphology
Copadichromis mbenjii is a fusiform, moderately deep-bodied utaka. FishBase gives a maximum length of about 5.5 in total length; in the lake males reach roughly 5 in and females around 4.5 in, with aquarium males occasionally pushing to about 6 in. The fin counts run 16–18 dorsal spines and 10–11 soft rays, with 3 anal spines and 8–9 anal soft rays. Konings' diagnosis rests on the pattern of body spots: like other members of its group it carries three lateral spots — a supra-pectoral spot, a supra-anal spot, and a caudal spot — but in Copadichromis mbenjii the supra-pectoral spot is distinctly enlarged, roughly 2 to 2.5 times the diameter of the supra-anal spot. It has 12–15 gill rakers on the first ceratobranchial, fewer than the densely raked open-water utaka, consistent with a fish that takes both plankton and larger benthic prey. Sexual dichromatism is strong, the usual Malawi pattern. Females and non-breeding fish are a plain silvery colour marked only by the three black spots. Breeding males transform: a metallic blue head and light-blue, faintly orange-suffused flanks, a white throat patched with grey, and — the field marks that separate this species — a clear yellow breast, a wide yellow marginal band along the anal fin, and a distinct yellow margin to the dorsal fin, whose lappets are tipped white. The anal fin is blue-black at its base and yellow distally, carrying the pale egg-spot ocelli typical of the lake's mouthbrooders.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi (also Lake Nyasa or Lake Niassa) and, within that vast rift lake, to a single locality — Mbenji Island, a small rocky island group in the south-central part of the lake lying in Malawian waters. The IUCN assessment is emphatic on the point: it is known from one location, with an estimated area of occupancy of about 2 mi² and an extent of occurrence near 1 mi², among the most restricted ranges of any Malawi cichlid. It is a fish of the "intermediate" habitat — the zone where rock gives way to open sand — rather than the rocky reefs proper or the true open water. FishBase records it at depths of 23–62 ft, with an average around 49 ft; the IUCN gives a somewhat broader 26–98 ft and the type series came from 26–49 ft. Females and non-breeding males hang in the water just above the bottom, while territorial males work the sand at the foot of the rocks. The water is the hard, alkaline, stable medium typical of Malawi's surface layer: FishBase cites an in-situ pH of about 7.3 to 8.4, hardness of roughly 5 to 30 dH, and temperatures of 75–81 °F (75 to 81 °F).
Feeding
Copadichromis mbenjii is a zooplanktivore that has not committed fully to the open-water lifestyle. FishBase places it at a trophic level near 3.4, and field observations describe it feeding on plankton in the water column while also taking benthic invertebrates close to the substrate — a mixed strategy that fits its intermediate fin-raker count and its sand-and-rock habitat. Females and non-breeding males forage in mid-water, picking individual zooplankters (copepods and other small drifting animals) the way the rest of the utaka do, using a small, highly protrusible mouth that fires forward as a suction tube. Because it stays among and near the rocks rather than shoaling far out over open water, it is less exposed to the chirimila open-water seine nets that target the lake's pelagic utaka — an ecological detail with direct conservation consequences. In Mbenji's reef-edge community it functions as one of several closely similar Copadichromis converting the lake's plankton production into fish biomass.
Mating
Socially the species follows the standard utaka pattern of shoaling females and territorial, bower-building males. Outside the immediate act of spawning, females and immature fish travel in schools that may number up to about fifty individuals, staying within roughly two metres of the bottom; mature males drop out of the shoal to hold territories on the sand at the base of the rocks. Breeding occurs more or less year-round, with activity lowest during the rainy season. A ready male signals his fitness through both colour and architecture: he excavates a bowl-shaped sand bower beneath or alongside a rock, a crater some 7–16.5 in across with a raised rim 1.5–3 in high, and displays in full blue-and-yellow breeding dress to draw females down from the passing shoals. The bower is the courtship arena and, with the small cave under the adjoining rock, the spawning site; rival males are driven off, making mature males moderately to strongly territorial during the breeding period even though the species is otherwise calm by Malawi-cichlid standards.
Breeding
Like virtually all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Copadichromis mbenjii is a maternal mouthbrooder with no paternal care. Spawning takes place at the male's bower, often in or against the small cave beneath the rock he has chosen. The female lays her eggs in batches and immediately takes each batch up into her mouth; drawn to the egg-spot ocelli on the male's anal fin, she nuzzles at them and the male releases milt, fertilizing the clutch inside her mouth — the classic Malawi mechanism. She then carries the developing brood for about three weeks (roughly 21 days), not feeding during that time, before releasing free-swimming fry. Broods are small for the effort: malawi.si reports a typical yield of about 20 to 40 fry, which are not guarded once released. Generation length is on the order of two years. The combination of small, unguarded broods and a single-island range is part of why the species' total population, while described as stable and locally abundant, is geographically so concentrated.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis mbenjii has a modest but dedicated following in the cichlid hobby, where it circulates under the trade name "Quads." It is not among the most commonly available Copadichromis — its restricted wild range and relatively small brood size keep import volumes low — but it turns up regularly at specialist cichlid dealers and through hobbyist breeding programs. Captive specimens are not particularly difficult to maintain provided their Lake Malawi chemistry is respected: pH between 7.8 and 8.6, total hardness in the 10–20 dH range, temperature 75–81 °F (75–81 °F), and consistent high water quality. These targets are attainable with modest buffering or a commercially sold Malawi salt mix used sparingly; the fish is far less tolerant of soft, acidic, or low-pH water than a novice might assume.
Tank sizing deserves careful thought. Copadichromis mbenjii is a genuinely open-water fish that schools in nature and an active midwater swimmer in the tank. A single male with two or three females wants a minimum footprint of around 59 in, and a more realistic community of one male with several females plus compatible tankmates calls for 71 in or longer. The layout should provide a sandy substrate — fine play sand or pool filter sand, which will be rearranged by any courting male building his bower — with a scatter of rounded rocks or slate to break lines of sight and provide territory markers, but with the bulk of the tank left as unobstructed open water. Dense tall plantings or tightly packed rock walls recreate mbuna habitat rather than utaka habitat and are unsuitable. Good mechanical and biological filtration and regular water changes of around 25–30 % weekly are essential; Malawi cichlids as a group are sensitive to dissolved organic build-up.
Tankmate selection should reflect this species' relatively mild temperament. Copadichromis mbenjii is calm by Lake Malawi standards — males are territorial around their bower during spawning but do not inflict the relentless aggression typical of mbuna. Good companions include other peacock-group cichlids (Aulonocara species), similar-sized haplochromines of comparable disposition (other non-aggressive Copadichromis, Placidochromis, Protomelas), and bottom-oriented catfish such as Synodontis multipunctatus. Aggressive mbuna (Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis, Labeotropheus) are poor choices: they will bully the more open-water utaka mercilessly and may prevent females from eating. Keeping multiple males of the same species in a smaller tank typically produces constant chasing; a single-male harem works best unless the tank is large enough to dilute aggression across several males.
Breeding in captivity follows the pattern described in nature. A ready male will rake out a shallow crater in the sand, often against a rock, and court females with spread fins and full colour. After spawning the female mouthbroods for approximately three weeks; she should not be harassed during this period and benefits from being moved to a quiet holding tank if the main display is busy. Broods are small — typically 20 to 40 fry — and the fry are free-swimming and independent at release, accepting finely crushed cichlid flake and baby brine shrimp immediately. Growth is moderate.
The most common keeper mistakes with this and related Malawi utaka are: housing them in water that is too soft or too acidic, which gradually weakens the immune system and invites Malawi bloat (a metabolic and bacterial enteritis that can kill quickly); feeding a diet too rich in mammalian proteins — beef heart, for example — which the zooplanktivore gut cannot handle well over time; and underestimating the tank size needed for a fish that covers real distances in open water. A varied diet of quality cichlid pellets, spirulina-enriched flake, and live or frozen plankton substitutes (Daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp) keeps the fish in good condition. Because Copadichromis mbenjii is known from a single island and captive populations represent a genuine genetic resource, hobbyist breeders who maintain pure, correctly labelled strains contribute meaningfully to the species' long-term security.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Copadichromis mbenjii as Least Concern (assessed 23 May 2018 by Ad Konings; errata version published 2019), with a population trend recorded as stable. The listing is notable because it is a deliberate downgrade: the species was assessed as Vulnerable in both 2006 and an earlier 2018 assessment before being re-evaluated. On range alone it meets the area thresholds for a threatened category — its area of occupancy (about 2 mi²) and extent of occurrence (about 1 mi²) fall well under the criterion-B limits, and it is known from a single location at Mbenji Island. The assessors nonetheless concluded that the recognized threats are unlikely to drive it to Critically Endangered or Extinct in the near term, and so placed it at Least Concern rather than meeting the VU D2 threshold. Two factors underpin that judgement. First, the fish lives among and near the rocks rather than in true open water, so the utaka seine nets that pressure the pelagic plankton-feeders cannot easily be worked over its habitat — although it does turn up regularly in the catches of Mbenji's many subsistence fishermen, largely because it is so abundant there, and it is collected for the aquarium trade under the name "Quads." Second, the island already has a community-enforced closed fishing season, a real conservation action protecting the one place this species exists. None of this makes a single-island endemic invulnerable: the lake as a whole faces mounting pressure from sediment and nutrient loading, intensifying fisheries, and climate change, and a species confined to one small reef has no second population to fall back on. The accurate reading is the careful one — a locally common, currently secure fish whose long-term fate is tied entirely to the health of one rocky island in Lake Malawi.
