Taxonomy & naming
Johann Jakob Heckel described this fish in 1840 as Heros friedrichsthalii, working from specimens the Austrian explorer Emanuel von Friedrichsthal had sent back to the Vienna Museum from Central America. The type locality is given as the Río San Juan or Lake Nicaragua drainage in Nicaragua, and the unique holotype (NMW 35322) still resides in Vienna. The species passed through a long succession of genera as cichlid classification was repeatedly overhauled — combined at various times in Cichlasoma and then in Nandopsis — before William Bussing (1998) and Sven Kullander (2003) settled it in Parachromis, the genus Louis Agassiz had erected in 1859 for the large Central American guapotes. That is its current valid placement: Parachromis friedrichsthalii (Heckel, 1840), in the subfamily Cichlinae.
The name has a genuinely tangled history that any keeper should understand. For well over a century, "Parachromis friedrichsthalii" was applied in books and the trade to a strongly barred, gold-and-black guapote ranging across the northern Atlantic slope from Mexico and Guatemala to Honduras — the fish nearly everyone meant by the common name "yellowjacket." In 2018 Roberto Morgenstern re-examined Friedrichsthal's original collections and Heckel's type, and showed that Heckel's name actually belongs to a different, more southern species — the one ichthyologists and aquarists had been calling Parachromis loisellei since Bussing described it in 1989. By the rules of priority, friedrichsthalii (1840) takes precedence, loisellei (1989) falls into synonymy, and the boldly banded northern hobby fish needed a new name: it was redescribed as Parachromis multifasciatus (Regan, 1905). Catalog of Fishes now treats friedrichsthalii and loisellei as the same valid species, distributed on the Atlantic slope from the Río Negro and eastern Honduras south to the Laguna de Chiriquí in western Panama. The upshot is that the modern Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a smaller, more southerly, less gaudily marked fish than the "yellowjacket" most older sources describe — a point worth keeping in mind when reading anything published before 2018.
Morphology
Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a stocky, elongate cichlid built on the standard guapote plan: a deep-headed, torpedo-bodied predator with a large, terminal mouth and the protrusible, well-toothed jaws of a fish that earns its living swallowing other fish whole. FishBase gives a maximum of about 11 in standard length; in practice it is one of the smaller Parachromis, with most wild and aquarium fish maturing well below that — reports under the former name loisellei describe usual sizes around 8 in, sexual maturity reached near 4 in, and only exceptional males approaching 10–12 in. That makes it a giant beside a dwarf cichlid but a comparative lightweight next to its congeners Parachromis managuensis and Parachromis dovii, which can exceed 19.5 in.
Coloration is olive to brassy-gold over the flanks, paler below, broken by a row of dark mid-lateral blotches and often a scatter of irregular spotting; breeding and dominant fish intensify the gold and the dark markings. (The vivid, evenly banded "wasp" livery that gave the trade name "yellowjacket" belongs strictly to Parachromis multifasciatus, the fish formerly confused with this one — true friedrichsthalii is more soberly patterned.) Sexual dimorphism follows the genus pattern: males grow distinctly larger and heavier-headed, develop longer, more pointed dorsal and anal fin tips, and tend to deeper background color, while ripe females are smaller and rounder-bodied. The differences are reliable only in mature, well-grown fish; juveniles and subadults are difficult to sex on sight.
Habitat
This is a fish of the Caribbean (Atlantic) lowlands of lower Central America. Following the corrected taxonomy, its native range runs along the Atlantic slope from the Río Negro and eastern Honduras south through the great Río San Juan / Lake Nicaragua system and the rivers of Costa Rica to the Laguna de Chiriquí in western Panama, with the IUCN assessment listing occurrence in Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. (Records attributed to Mexico, Belize and Guatemala in older literature pertain to the species now called Parachromis multifasciatus.) These drainages fall within the San Juan and Isthmus Caribbean freshwater ecoregions.
Within that range it favors slow, sluggish water — the quieter reaches of rivers, oxbows, lagoons, lowland streams, lakes and swamps — over fast or turbulent flow. It tolerates a wide swing in clarity, from clear to murky or distinctly muddy water, and readily enters brackish coastal water, a salinity tolerance typical of the lowland Central American cichlid fauna. The IUCN notes it is normally found no deeper than about 7 ft, so it is essentially a shallow-water fish of the littoral and channel margins. FishBase characterizes its preferred thermal range as roughly 79–86 °F; the warm, mineral-bearing, near-neutral to alkaline waters typical of this region (pH commonly around 7–8) suit it well.
Feeding
Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a piscivore — FishBase places it at a high trophic level (around 4.2) and notes it feeds primarily upon other live fishes. Like the rest of its genus it is an ambush and pursuit predator rather than a grazer or sifter: it hangs in cover or among structure, then lunges with a rapid expansion of its large mouth to engulf prey, the protrusible jaws and recurved teeth holding a struggling fish until it can be swallowed. Smaller fishes are the staple, supplemented opportunistically by aquatic insects, crustaceans (shrimps) and other invertebrates, with younger fish taking proportionally more invertebrate prey before shifting fully to a fish diet as they grow.
In its lowland communities it functions as a mid-sized top predator, exerting the kind of control over small-fish populations that the larger guapotes (managuense, dovii) impose at a bigger scale. Its willingness to hunt in turbid water and to forage into brackish reaches widens the prey base available to it. In aquaria this background shows plainly: the fish is a confident, even greedy feeder that quickly learns to take prepared foods.
Mating
As in other Parachromis, reproduction in Parachromis friedrichsthalii centers on a strong, monogamous pair bond and aggressive defense of a chosen breeding site. Pair formation is preceded by the lateral displays, fin-flaring, jaw-locking and color intensification characteristic of substrate-spawning Central American cichlids; a compatible male and female will progressively isolate themselves from conspecifics and clear and defend a territory around a flat surface — a rock face, a sunken log, or the wall of a depression they excavate. Both sexes contribute to defense, but the larger male is the principal sentry against intruders while the female concentrates on the spawning site.
This territoriality is intense and is the dominant fact of the fish's social life during breeding. Pairs become markedly less tolerant of tankmates and of each other if poorly matched, and unsuccessful pairings can turn violent. That said, by the standards of the genus this species (under its former name loisellei) had a reputation as one of the more even-tempered guapotes — described as comparatively peaceful and slower to turn aggressive, becoming belligerent mainly when crowded or harassed. It is still a large, predatory cichlid that demands space, not a community fish.
Breeding
Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a biparental, open substrate (open-brooding) spawner. The female deposits her eggs in neat rows on a cleaned hard surface — a flat stone, root, or in aquaria the side of a flowerpot or slab — and the male follows to fertilize them; in the wild a depression may be excavated as the nesting site. FishBase reports a fecundity on the order of 500–700 eggs, consistent with a medium-large substrate-spawning cichlid. Both parents tend the clutch: the female fans and cleans the eggs while the male patrols and drives off intruders, the classic division of labor in pair-bonding Neotropical cichlids.
The eggs hatch in roughly five to seven days depending on temperature, after which the wrigglers are moved to pits and guarded until they become free-swimming a few days later. The pair then leads and defends the school of fry, which the parents will shepherd vigorously and over which they remain highly protective for a prolonged period. Warm, stable water in the upper twenties Celsius and a diet rich in live or meaty foods bring fish into spawning condition; a securely bonded pair with adequate territory will spawn repeatedly. Its open-spawning habit and manageable adult size make it one of the more accessible Parachromis to breed for a keeper with the right setup.
In the aquarium
Parachromis friedrichsthalii is a fish for the dedicated Central American cichlid keeper, not a beginner's community fish — but it is one of the more approachable guapotes. Its predatory nature, adult size and territoriality set the terms. A single adult needs a tank of roughly 105–120 US gal at minimum, and a breeding pair or any attempt at a mixed tank wants more — a footprint of 59 in or longer makes managing aggression far easier by giving fish room to establish and retreat. Length and floor space matter more than sheer volume. A tightly fitting lid is essential: these are powerful, agile fish and capable jumpers.
Water chemistry is undemanding within a warm, hard-water envelope that mirrors the wild: temperature about 75–86 °F (the mid-to-upper twenties suit it best), pH roughly 7.0–8.0, and moderate to fairly hard water. As with all large predators, the real husbandry challenge is waste: a heavy meat-based diet produces a heavy bioload, so over-filtration and large, regular water changes are non-negotiable for long-term health. Decor should provide structure and sightline breaks — sturdy rockwork, driftwood and a few caves or a flowerpot — arranged so subordinate fish and a non-spawning mate can get out of view. Plants are generally torn up or uprooted and are best omitted or limited to tough, potted species.
Feeding is easy: the fish readily takes quality sinking carnivore pellets as a staple, supplemented with frozen or fresh meaty foods such as shrimp, mussel, earthworms and the occasional piece of white fish. Live feeder fish are unnecessary and carry real disease and nutrition risks; avoid them. Guard against overfeeding, to which a greedy, sedentary predator is prone.
On compatibility, treat it as a large, mouth-sized-predator first: anything small enough to swallow will be eaten, and timid tankmates will be bullied. The workable companions are other robust, similarly sized Central Americans (large Cichlasoma-group cichlids, other guapotes, big plecos as cleanup) in a tank large enough to spread out aggression, with the understanding that any pairing can break down. Many experienced keepers run it as a single specimen or a confirmed pair in a species tank, which is the lowest-risk approach. Its relatively even temper for a guapote makes it a sensible entry point into the genus, but the space and filtration requirements are real and should not be underestimated.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Parachromis friedrichsthalii as Least Concern (assessed 18 December 2019 by T.J. Lyons, R. González and W.A. Matamoros; published 2020), with the population trend recorded as unknown. The species is widely distributed across the Caribbean lowland drainages of lower Central America, occurs in a range of slow-water and even brackish habitats, and is not the target of any focused fishery — FishBase lists it as of no commercial fisheries interest, though it is taken as a gamefish and traded modestly for the aquarium hobby. It carries no CITES or CMS listing.
No species-specific threat is flagged, but the freshwater systems it inhabits face the general pressures common across lowland Central America: deforestation and agricultural runoff, pollution and sedimentation, water extraction, the spread of introduced cichlids and tilapias, and habitat alteration from dams and development. As a tolerant, fairly widespread habitat generalist it is far less exposed than the region's many narrow-range endemics, and its Least Concern status reflects that resilience. The taxonomic clarification of 2018–2019 also means conservation accounting for this name now properly tracks the southern populations, distinct from the more northern Parachromis multifasciatus.
