Diplotaxodon sp. "Ngulube" has no authority, no year of description, and no FishBase entry; it is known only by this informal field name. "Ngulube" corresponds to one of the genetically distinct lineages identified within the Diplotaxodon macrops complex by population-genetic studies of the lake's deep-water cichlids — work that found the fish sold and recorded under the single name "macrops" actually comprises several reproductively isolated forms, informally tagged "macrops offshore," "macrops black dorsal," and "macrops ngulube," which are essentially indistinguishable in body shape or preserved colour but differ consistently in the black-and-white breeding markings ripe males display. That research demonstrates the lineage is a genuine, independently evolving population rather than a random label, but it has never been given a Latin binomial of its own, so it remains formally undescribed and should not be treated as a synonym of Diplotaxodon macrops.
Morphology
Diplotaxodon macrops, the species this lineage is grouped with, is small for the genus — a documented maximum of about 5 in standard length — with the elongate, fusiform, laterally compressed body typical of open-water Diplotaxodon and a conspicuously large eye (roughly 35–38% of head length) adapted to gathering light in deep, dim water. The genetic studies that define "ngulube" as distinct from its sister lineages worked from live and freshly caught specimens specifically because the defining trait — male breeding-dress pattern — is subtle and often lost in preservation; the general finding across the macrops complex is that ripe males turn dark, near-black, with variations in the extent and shape of a white dorsal-fin margin marking each lineage apart. No published account isolates exactly what distinguishes "ngulube" males from the "offshore" or "black dorsal" forms in terms that can be repeated here with confidence, so this article does not invent that detail; body size and shape are presented as macrops-typical.
Habitat
This form is recorded off Nkhata Bay, on the Malawian shore in the northern half of Lake Malawi. The macrops complex as a whole is a benthopelagic, deep-shelf group, recorded from roughly 328–722 ft with peak abundance near 722 ft — squarely within the lake's twilight zone, where downwelling light is reduced to a narrow blue band and the lake's permanent, oxygen-free deep water sets a hard floor on how much deeper any fish can live. The genetic study that identified "ngulube" as a distinct lineage sampled sympatric Diplotaxodon between roughly 40 and 656 ft, finding that even forms overlapping broadly in depth remain genetically separate — meaning depth alone does not explain how these lineages stay apart, and no depth figure specific to "ngulube" beyond that general sampling range has been published.
Feeding
Diplotaxodon macrops and its relatives are zooplanktivores, feeding on insect larvae — notably the phantom midge Chaoborus, which swarms the offshore water column — along with small crustaceans and diatoms. Trawl surveys of Lake Malawi's pelagic zone have found that cichlids dominate offshore fish biomass, with zooplanktivorous Diplotaxodon among the largest single contributors, making this genus one of the central links between the lake's plankton and its larger open-water predators. No feeding study isolates "ngulube" specifically from its sister lineages, so its diet is presented here as complex-typical zooplanktivory rather than a documented fact unique to this form.
Mating
This is the behavioural axis the "ngulube" designation is actually built on. As with other Diplotaxodon, "Ngulube" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder. The genus is notable for low fecundity given its abundance: brooding females of well-studied Diplotaxodon typically carry only one or two well-developed fry, a strategy suited to investing in a few large young rather than releasing many small ones into open water with no nursery cover. In the aquarium
Diplotaxodon sp. "Ngulube" is not an aquarium fish. Like the rest of the macrops complex, it is known only from trawl and research sampling in deep offshore water and has no established presence in the ornamental trade; keeping it would mean replicating a large, cool, dim, open-water column that no ordinary tank provides. It is a genuinely interesting fish for what it demonstrates about how new species form in the lake's deep-water darkness, not for the aquarium — no husbandry record exists, and none should be invented.

The wider macrops complex faces the same general pressures as other offshore Diplotaxodon: mid-water trawl fishing that takes pelagic cichlids as bycatch, and a warming, increasingly stratified lake in which weaker deep mixing threatens the nutrient supply that sustains offshore plankton production.
