Diplotaxodon longimaxilla belongs to the genus Diplotaxodon, erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 for the silvery, offshore haplochromines of what was then Lake Nyasa, with Diplotaxodon argenteus as the type species. Most of the genus's currently recognised species were described considerably later, chiefly through the revisionary work of George Turner, Jay Stauffer, and colleagues from 1998 onward, which clarified a group long recognised as taxonomically difficult. The precise original description and year for Diplotaxodon longimaxilla specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. Comparative work on the related Diplotaxodon macrops records that species' eye diameter at roughly 35–38% of head length, among the highest in the genus, while noting longimaxilla sits distinctly lower, closer to 27–32% — a smaller eye relative to head size that, combined with the longer jaw, points toward a build shifted away from pure light-gathering plankton-picking and toward handling somewhat larger prey. Like other Diplotaxodon it is expected to carry the genus's fusiform, silvery, countershaded body suited to open-water cruising, with ripe males developing the subdued, largely monochromatic black-and-white breeding pattern typical of the lake's deep-water cichlid community rather than bright shallow-water colours.
Habitat
Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is documented here from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, part of the lake's southern basin. Like other members of its genus it is expected to be a benthopelagic, open-water fish rather than one tied to rocky shoreline, occupying some part of the depth range the genus spans — from moderate offshore depths down into the lake's deep, cool, dimly lit "twilight zone," where light is filtered down to a narrow blue band and the lake's permanent stratification caps how deep any fish can live before running out of oxygen. The specific depth range recorded for this species has not been confirmed here.
Feeding
The elongated jaw and comparatively smaller eye that distinguish Diplotaxodon longimaxilla from its close relative Diplotaxodon macrops suggest a diet shifted toward larger prey — plausibly including small fish — rather than the fine zooplankton-picking that defines the more strictly planktivorous members of the genus. Diplotaxodon as a whole are understood chiefly as zooplanktivores, taking small crustaceans, insect larvae such as Chaoborus phantom-midge larvae, and diatoms from the open water column, and collectively form a major share of the lake's pelagic fish biomass.
