Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Diplotaxodon longimaxilla belongs to the genus Diplotaxodon, erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 for the silvery, offshore haplochromines of what was then Lake Nyasa, with Diplotaxodon argenteus as the type species. Most of the genus's currently recognised species were described considerably later, chiefly through the revisionary work of George Turner, Jay Stauffer, and colleagues from 1998 onward, which clarified a group long recognised as taxonomically difficult. The precise original description and year for Diplotaxodon longimaxilla specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. The epithet longimaxilla is a straightforward Latin compound — longus ("long") and maxilla ("upper jaw") — describing the elongated jaw that is this species' defining anatomical feature.

Morphology

The name says it plainly: Diplotaxodon longimaxilla carries a notably elongated maxilla, or upper jaw, compared with its congeners. Comparative work on the related Diplotaxodon macrops records that species' eye diameter at roughly 35–38% of head length, among the highest in the genus, while noting longimaxilla sits distinctly lower, closer to 27–32% — a smaller eye relative to head size that, combined with the longer jaw, points toward a build shifted away from pure light-gathering plankton-picking and toward handling somewhat larger prey. Like other Diplotaxodon it is expected to carry the genus's fusiform, silvery, countershaded body suited to open-water cruising, with ripe males developing the subdued, largely monochromatic black-and-white breeding pattern typical of the lake's deep-water cichlid community rather than bright shallow-water colours.

Habitat

Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is documented here from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, part of the lake's southern basin. Like other members of its genus it is expected to be a benthopelagic, open-water fish rather than one tied to rocky shoreline, occupying some part of the depth range the genus spans — from moderate offshore depths down into the lake's deep, cool, dimly lit "twilight zone," where light is filtered down to a narrow blue band and the lake's permanent stratification caps how deep any fish can live before running out of oxygen. The specific depth range recorded for this species has not been confirmed here.

Feeding

The elongated jaw and comparatively smaller eye that distinguish Diplotaxodon longimaxilla from its close relative Diplotaxodon macrops suggest a diet shifted toward larger prey — plausibly including small fish — rather than the fine zooplankton-picking that defines the more strictly planktivorous members of the genus. Diplotaxodon as a whole are understood chiefly as zooplanktivores, taking small crustaceans, insect larvae such as Chaoborus phantom-midge larvae, and diatoms from the open water column, and collectively form a major share of the lake's pelagic fish biomass. Specific gut-content data for longimaxilla has not been documented here, so this account is inferred from its comparative morphology rather than direct dietary observation.

Mating

In the dim, blue-filtered light of Lake Malawi's open water, the bright reds and yellows that distinguish shallow-water cichlid species do not carry, and related Diplotaxodon are documented instead relying on subtle, largely monochromatic black-white-and-silver breeding patterns to signal readiness and keep closely related species apart. Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is presumed to follow this pattern, though courtship specific to the species has not been documented. As in other haplochromines, males are expected to display and compete for female attention with no lasting pair bond, all subsequent parental care falling to the female alone.

Breeding

As with other Lake Malawi haplochromines, Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder. The genus is notable for unusually low fecundity relative to its abundance — well-studied congeners are typically found carrying only one or two well-developed fry per brood, a strategy of heavy investment in a few large young rather than many small ones. Specific fecundity data for longimaxilla has not been documented. There is no fixed nest site and no paternal role beyond fertilisation and display; the female alone incubates and shelters the brood in her mouth until the fry are released.

In the aquarium

This is not an aquarium fish. Diplotaxodon as a genus are offshore, open-water species taken almost exclusively by commercial trawl or research net, and they are essentially absent from the ornamental trade. A cool-water, open-schooling fish adapted to dim, deep habitat shares little with the bright, territorial rock-dwellers that dominate typical Malawi tanks, and no husbandry tradition exists for it. Diplotaxodon longimaxilla, like its relatives, is best understood as part of the lake's little-seen offshore ecology rather than as a candidate for the fish room.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment specific to Diplotaxodon longimaxilla is confirmed here, so no status is asserted. As an offshore, open-water endemic it would not be expected to face the aquarium-collection pressure affecting some shallow-water Malawi cichlids, but the broader Diplotaxodon community is targeted in meaningful volume by the lake's mid-water trawl fisheries, and the genus as a whole is exposed to basin-wide pressures — a warming, more strongly stratified lake that reduces the productivity-driving mixing of its waters, and intensifying fishing pressure across the open-water fish community. Its specific population status has not been documented here.
