Its trade name references the formally described Diplotaxodon ecclesi — recorded in this atlas from Monkey Bay in the southern lake — signalling that field observers consider the two similar enough to compare, though not that they are the same species; the qualifier "White Dorsal" then records the field mark used to separate this South East Arm population, a pale or white dorsal fin. Diplotaxodon is itself among the least-resolved genera in Lake Malawi — a large radiation of open-water haplochromines in which most of the roughly 15-plus recognised forms are informally distinguished rather than formally described, because the fish are difficult to collect, rarely observed alive by scientists, and separated mainly by subtle traits such as eye size, body depth, and fin pigmentation.
Morphology
This form follows the standard Diplotaxodon body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped fish built for sustained open-water swimming, with the large eyes characteristic of the genus, adapted to gathering light in the dim, blue-shifted water many species inhabit. The field mark carried in its name is a white or pale dorsal fin, used to distinguish it from other silvery Diplotaxodon in the South East Arm, including from the described D. ecclesi it is informally compared to. Genus-typical size runs roughly 4–6 in SL; no species-specific measurements have been published for this form.
Habitat
Diplotaxodon sp. "Ecclesi White Dorsal" is recorded from the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a large open bay in the southeastern part of the lake. Unlike the mbuna and utaka that dominate the lake's rocky and sandy littoral, Diplotaxodon does not associate with any substrate at all — it is a pelagic fish, living in loose schools over open, often deep water well offshore. The genus as a whole spans a wide depth envelope, from moderate depths down into the dim, cool waters of the lake's deep mixed and transition layers, and many species undertake a nightly vertical migration toward the surface to feed. Surface water follows Lake Malawi's standard chemistry — warm, hard, and alkaline — though the deeper water this genus favours runs cooler and less oxygenated.
Feeding
Diplotaxodon as a genus is built around zooplanktivory: the fish forage in open water for copepods, cladocerans, and other zooplankton, picking individual prey items from the water column rather than grazing a substrate or sifting sediment. Several species feed near the surface at night, coinciding with their vertical migration.
