Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis beadlei was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1933, in her account of the cichlid fishes collected by the Cambridge Expedition to the East African Lakes of 1930-1931 (Journal of the Linnean Society of London, Zoology, vol. 38). The holotype (BMNH 1933.2.23.221), with nine paratypes (BMNH 1933.2.23.222-230), is held at the Natural History Museum, London, and the type locality is simply 'Lake Nabugabo,' Uganda. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the name as valid as Haplochromis beadlei Trewavas 1933, following Greenwood's 1965 revision of the Nabugabo cichlids and the CLOFFA check-list of van Oijen and colleagues (1991).
The species sits in the vast Lake Victoria 'superflock' of haplochromine cichlids, within the tribe Haplochromini of subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. Its generic placement, like that of nearly every Victorian haplochromine, is unsettled. Peter Greenwood's effort to break the unwieldy catch-all genus Haplochromis into smaller, more natural units transferred this fish to Paralabidochromis (Greenwood 1980), and some literature still cites it as Paralabidochromis beadlei. Other workers have parked the lacustrine 'Astatotilapia'-like Nabugabo species under Astatotilapia, though scale and morphological studies have since shown the lake species to be unrelated to the riverine Astatotilapia group. Because molecular work has repeatedly failed to resolve clean genera within the radiation, most current databases (FishBase, Catalog of Fishes) retain the conservative binomial Haplochromis beadlei, and that is the heading used here.
Morphology
Haplochromis beadlei is a small cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in in standard length (FishBase, after the CLOFFA treatment); most individuals seen are smaller. In overall form it is a typical generalized haplochromine: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a single continuous dorsal fin, and the small conical-to-bicuspid jaw teeth of a fish that takes both small invertebrates and plant material. As in the rest of the flock, the sexes differ chiefly in breeding dress rather than in size or shape: mature males develop the bright nuptial coloration and the egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that are universal courtship signals in haplochromines, while females and non-breeding fish are a plainer, more cryptic silvery-brown.
Detailed live coloration for Haplochromis beadlei is poorly documented in the accessible literature — Trewavas worked from preserved museum material, and the species has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby, so no widely circulated photographs or colour descriptions exist. This is an honest gap: beyond the preserved-specimen morphometrics in Trewavas (1933) and Greenwood (1965), the fine details of its appearance are not well recorded.
Habitat
The species is a strict Lake Nabugabo endemic. Nabugabo is a small (roughly 15 mi²), shallow lake on the western shore of Lake Victoria in Uganda, cut off from the main lake a few thousand years ago by a sand bar; despite its youth it has evolved several endemic haplochromines, of which beadlei is one. FishBase, drawing on Greenwood, records the fish from the shallow inshore regions of the main lake and from the lakeward inlets to the marginal swamps, over sand, over sand with a mud-detritus overlay, and over deep mud — a soft-bottom, near-shore fish rather than an open-water or rocky one.
Nabugabo's water is soft and dilute. The open lake is slightly alkaline with very low dissolved solids — conductivity under about 40 µS/cm — while the extensive fringing papyrus and Miscanthidium swamps are more acidic and often hypoxic. As a tropical equatorial lake (latitude roughly 0-1°S) its surface waters are warm year-round. No in-situ chemistry has been published specifically for the microhabitats of Haplochromis beadlei, so for husbandry the sensible band for the lake as a whole is a near-neutral to mildly alkaline pH of about 7.0-8.5 (lower in the swamp ecotone) and temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F; depth is shallow, on the order of 0–16 ft where the fish lives.
Feeding
Haplochromis beadlei is a small invertebrate-and-plant feeder rather than a specialist. The dietary records compiled in FishBase (from Greenwood and from Fryer & Iles' classic survey of the great-lake cichlids) report it feeding on insect larvae — chironomid (midge) and trichopteran (caddisfly) larvae — together with plant epidermis scraped or ingested from submerged vegetation and detritus. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 2.8, consistent with a low-level omnivore working the soft inshore bottom and weed beds.
This mixed insectivore-plus-plant-material niche is typical of the smaller, generalized members of the Victoria/Nabugabo flock, in contrast to the lake's more specialized mollusc-crushers, scale-eaters and piscivores. In the Nabugabo community such generalists forage the vegetated margins and detritus-rich shallows, exactly the zones that later proved to be life-saving refugia.
Mating
No courtship description exists specifically for Haplochromis beadlei, but its reproductive behaviour can be read confidently from the rest of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock, to which it belongs and which is remarkably uniform in this respect. These are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. Breeding males take on bright nuptial colour and defend a small display territory or court actively over the substrate; the egg-spots on the male's anal fin are central to spawning, exploiting the female's instinct to gather her eggs. A receptive female is courted, lays a small clutch and immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, where the male's anal-fin ocelli draw her to snap at his vent and so take up milt and fertilize the brood. The male contributes nothing further. This 'lek-like,' male-display-then-female-care system, repeated across hundreds of species, is one of the engines behind the flock's explosive speciation, since female mate choice on male colour can drive rapid divergence.
Breeding
FishBase records the reproductive mode of Haplochromis beadlei plainly as 'mouthbrooding by female' — an ovophilous (egg-carrying) maternal mouthbrooder, as in essentially all Lake Victoria and Nabugabo haplochromines. The female alone incubates the fertilized eggs in her buccal cavity, where they develop sheltered from predators; she continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth for a period after hatching, taking them back in at any disturbance, before they are finally released to fend for themselves.
Species-specific figures — clutch size, incubation period, fry size at release — have not been published for Haplochromis beadlei. As a genus-typical guide, small haplochromines of this size in the Victoria flock generally lay modest clutches on the order of 20-60 eggs per spawning, with the female brooding for roughly two to three weeks; these are illustrative congener values, not measured figures for this species, and should be treated as such. The combination of small clutches and prolonged, mobile maternal care is exactly what allowed brooding females to keep reproducing within the cramped, predator-rich swamp margins after the Nile perch arrived.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis beadlei is, for all practical purposes, not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the ornamental trade, is a Critically Endangered single-lake endemic, and is of no interest to commercial fisheries; there are no hobbyist breeding accounts, no trade-name forms, and essentially no captive husbandry literature for it. Anyone encountering it would do so in a conservation or research context, not a home tank.
Were it ever maintained — for example in a managed conservation-breeding programme of the kind run for other threatened Victoria-basin haplochromines — the requirements would follow the well-understood template for small mouthbrooding haplochromines from soft, warm equatorial water: a group of one male to several females in a tank of around 55 US gal or more, fine sand and some structure to break sightlines and let subordinate fish escape the displaying male, warm water near 75–81 °F, and a near-neutral to mildly alkaline pH around 7.0-8.5 matching the dilute chemistry of Lake Nabugabo. A varied diet of small live and frozen invertebrates with some vegetable/algal content would suit its natural insectivore-plus-plant-epidermis feeding. As with all haplochromines, the chief husbandry pitfall is male aggression toward females and rivals, managed by stocking ratio, cover and tank size. None of this should be read as encouragement to collect a Critically Endangered endemic from the wild.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis beadlei as Critically Endangered (criteria A1ace, B1+2cd), assessed on 1 August 1996 by L. Kaufman, with Uganda as the sole country of occurrence; the assessment is dated and overdue for revision, but it remains the current published status (verified on the Red List, 2025). The listing reflects the species' tiny range — a single small lake — combined with the catastrophe that struck the whole Lake Victoria basin when the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus) was introduced in the mid-twentieth century. Around half of Nabugabo's indigenous fish species disappeared from the open water after the perch became established.
What makes Haplochromis beadlei notable is that it survived. Long-term surveys by Chapman, Chapman, Ogutu-Ohwayo and colleagues (Conservation Biology 1996, 2003) documented that beadlei (recorded there as Paralabidochromis beadlei) persisted in the lake's vegetated wetland margins — the shallow, structurally complex, often low-oxygen papyrus and Miscanthidium ecotones that Nile perch exploit poorly — and was among the species that resurged in the open lake after Nile perch were heavily fished down through the 1990s and 2000s. Lake Nabugabo thus became a textbook example of wetland refugia 'seeding' the recovery of an endemic fauna. The species is not out of danger: its entire world is one shallow lake, and the ongoing threats flagged for the system include burning and clearance of the marginal wetlands that are its refuge, shoreline disturbance, and the continued presence of introduced predators and tilapias. As a narrow endemic, it has no second home to fall back on.
