Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis empodisma was described by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1960, in one of his foundational papers revising the haplochromine cichlids of Lake Victoria. Greenwood erected the species in part to correct an earlier confusion: material now assigned to empodisma had previously been muddled with Haplochromis michaeli, and the name itself appears to allude to that obstacle to recognising the fish (see 'What's in the name'). The species belongs to the enormous Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation, a flock of several hundred closely related cichlids that diversified explosively from a small founder stock. In 1980 Greenwood made empodisma the type species of a new subgenus, Gaurochromis, grouping it with other robust, insectivorous bottom-dwellers; later authors have variously treated Gaurochromis as a full genus, so the fish is sometimes listed as Gaurochromis empodisma. The atlas retains the conservative combination Haplochromis empodisma, because the wholesale splitting of the old 'wastebasket' genus Haplochromis into dozens of small genera remains contested and many of those genera are not consistently recognised. (The fish does not belong to Enterochromis, a separate Greenwood segregate of small zooplanktivores.) No nomenclatural synonyms are listed for the species in GBIF, which treats Haplochromis empodisma Greenwood, 1960 as the accepted name and the original combination.
Morphology
Haplochromis empodisma is a small cichlid: FishBase gives a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, so most individuals are modest-bodied fish a few centimetres shorter. It has the generalised haplochromine build — a moderately deep, laterally compressed body with a single continuous dorsal fin — and, as a member of Greenwood's Gaurochromis group, comparatively stout jaws suited to a diet of hard-shelled benthic prey rather than the slender snout of the lake's plankton-pickers. Detailed live coloration is poorly documented in the accessible literature; like most Lake Victoria haplochromines, breeding males would be expected to develop bright nuptial colours (often built on blues, yellows and reds) and the egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that are characteristic of the flock, while females and non-breeding fish are a duller silvery-grey to brown. Because the species was described chiefly from preserved museum material, much of its life appearance remains undescribed, and the atlas does not invent it.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the vast, shallow equatorial lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, and is recorded from all three riparian countries. FishBase reports it from a depth range of roughly 33–295 ft, placing it among the moderately deep, offshore-bottom haplochromines rather than the shallow rocky-shore forms. Its defining habitat is the lake's expanses of soft organic-mud bottom, the fine, dark, partly anoxic sediment that floors much of Victoria's open basin. Lake Victoria is a warm, hard-water lake by the standards of the East African Rift's other great lakes: surface waters are typically near-neutral to alkaline (pH commonly around 7.2 to 9.0) and warm year-round (roughly 73–81 °F in the mixed surface layer), though the species' preferred bottom microhabitat would run cooler and lower in oxygen than the surface. Species-specific in-situ chemistry for empodisma itself has not been published; the figures here describe the lake it lives in.
Feeding
Haplochromis empodisma is a benthic feeder of the organic-mud zone. Examination of stomach and intestinal contents (the basis of the FishBase biology note, drawn from Greenwood's revision) shows it feeds mainly on the larvae of dipterous insects — chiefly chironomid (midge) larvae that burrow in the soft sediment — together with diatoms and other material ingested with the bottom mud. The remains of molluscs, including fragments of bivalve and gastropod shells, were also found in examined specimens, consistent with the robust jaws of the Gaurochromis group and a willingness to take hard-shelled prey. Its estimated trophic level is around 2.9, the low-to-middle position of an insectivore-detritivore. In the pre-perch Lake Victoria community, fish like empodisma were part of a dense guild of bottom-foraging haplochromines that recycled benthic invertebrates and detritus and, in turn, fed the lake's larger predators.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour has not been documented for Haplochromis empodisma specifically, and the atlas will not invent it. What can be said is drawn from the well-studied biology of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond: males establish and defend small temporary territories and court passing females with displays that show off their nuptial colours and the egg-spots on the anal fin. Mate choice in the flock is strongly visual, and divergence in male colour is thought to have been a powerful engine of the lake's explosive speciation. After a brief spawning, the male's parental role ends; all subsequent care falls to the female.
Breeding
Haplochromis empodisma is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder, as FishBase records and as is universal among the Lake Victoria haplochromines. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, releasing the fry only when they are relatively well developed; in many flock members she continues to shelter the young in her mouth at the first sign of danger for some days afterward. Species-specific clutch counts for empodisma have not been published, but Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size are small-clutch brooders, typically carrying on the order of a few dozen eggs and fry (commonly ~10–40, occasionally more) — a low fecundity offset by the protection that mouthbrooding gives each offspring. No male parental care is involved. Specific spawning triggers and fry-development timing for this species are not on record.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis empodisma is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It is an obscure, plainly-coloured mud-bottom species with no established presence in the ornamental trade, no readily available captive stock, and almost none of the documented husbandry that surrounds the popular rock-dwelling Victoria haplochromines. The handful of Lake Victoria haplochromines that are maintained by specialist keepers and conservation programmes are generally housed much like Lake Malawi mbuna — in hard, alkaline water (pH around 7.5–8.5), warm temperatures of about 75–81 °F, with robust filtration, and in the species-tank or single-species harem arrangements that the flock's intense, colour-driven male aggression demands. A bottom-feeder of soft organic mud such as empodisma would, in principle, need a deep fine-sediment substrate and the same hard alkaline water, but none of this has been put into practice for the species and the atlas notes only that, on the available evidence, it is a fish of museums and field surveys rather than of aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis empodisma as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw) — meaning there is not enough information on its current distribution and population to judge its extinction risk. That uncertainty is itself a symptom of the catastrophe that overtook Lake Victoria's haplochromine flock. Following the deliberate introduction and explosive 1980s population boom of the predatory Nile perch (Lates niloticus), compounded by lake-wide eutrophication and the resulting loss of water clarity and deep-water oxygen, an estimated one-third to one-half of Victoria's roughly 500 endemic haplochromine species were driven to extinction or to the brink, with the offshore and deep-water mud-dwellers among the hardest hit. Many species, empodisma included, simply vanished from survey catches for decades. There has been a partial, patchy resurgence of some haplochromines as the perch fishery matured and predation pressure eased, and a number of 'lost' Victoria cichlids have been rediscovered in recent years — empodisma among the names associated with such efforts — but the species' true status remains unresolved, which is exactly why it stays Data Deficient rather than being given a definite threat category.
