Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis flavus was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen, Han Zwennes and Erwin Lippitsch, in the monograph 'Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria: description of three new genera and fifteen new species' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 9(2): 129–228), co-authored with Niels Bouton. The name appeared in that work in the open-nomenclature form 'Haplochromis' flavus — the quotation marks flagging that Haplochromis, as applied across the Lake Victoria flock, is a vast and provisional catch-all rather than a tightly defined genus. The holotype (RMNH 33587, in the Naturalis collection, Leiden) and a large paratype series were collected at Makobe Island in the Speke Gulf, at a depth of about 3 metres; that island remains the species' type and best-studied locality. Before its formal description the fish had circulated for years in the literature and the hobby under Seehausen's field label, the 'yellow rockpicker.' Within the flock it sits in the 'rockpicker' assemblage of the Paralabidochromis lineage — the so-called 'chessboard mbipi,' named for a melanin pattern of vertical bars crossed by two dark longitudinal stripes. Some checklists accordingly cite the fish as Haplochromis (Paralabidochromis) flavus. The genus-level classification of the Lake Victoria haplochromines is genuinely unsettled: the entire superflock is so young and so closely interrelated that most of its members are still parked in Haplochromis pending a revision that may never fully resolve, and we keep that conventional heading here.
Morphology
The yellow rockpicker is a small, fusiform haplochromine reaching about 4.5 in in standard length, with the typical Lake Victoria cichlid meristics: roughly 15–17 dorsal spines and 9–10 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 9–10 anal soft rays, and 29–31 vertebrae. Its English name captures its single most striking feature: territorial, sexually active males in the Makobe population turn a vivid, even bright yellow — the Latin epithet flavus simply means 'yellow' or 'golden' — and it is this nuptial colour, displayed over the rocks to females and rivals, that the describers singled out. Females and non-breeding fish are far plainer, in muted brassy, grey-brown or silvery tones, often showing the dark 'chessboard' melanin pattern of vertical bars overlaid by longitudinal stripes that defines the group. As a 'rockpicker' it carries the diagnostic feeding apparatus of that complex: narrow dental arcades and procumbent (forward-leaning) anterior teeth in the lower jaw that together form a fine, forceps-like tool for plucking prey from rock surfaces. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in the usual haplochromine manner — males are the larger, brightly coloured, territorial sex and carry yellow or orange egg-spots on the anal fin, while females remain cryptically coloured.
Habitat
Haplochromis flavus is endemic to Lake Victoria and, on current records, confined to the lake's eastern, Tanzanian side, where it is documented from the rocky islands of the Speke and Mwanza gulfs — Makobe Island being the type locality. Like the rest of the mbipi it is stenotopic and rock-restricted: it lives only over rocky substrates and does not cross the expanses of open sand or mud that separate one rocky island or headland from the next, so each rocky outcrop tends to hold its own semi-isolated population. Its microhabitat spans very gentle to moderately steep rocky slopes in the shallow littoral; the type material came from about 3 metres' depth, and most rockpicker activity is concentrated in the well-lit upper few metres where filamentous algae and their associated invertebrates are richest. Lake Victoria water is moderately soft and warm: published figures give a pH of roughly 7.1 to 9.0, hardness around 2–8 °dH, conductivity near 98–145 µS/cm, and surface temperatures from about 70–82 °F (averaging around 79 °F). The transparency of this water is the critical ecological variable for a fish that mates by colour — a point that returns under Conservation.
Feeding
As its common name promises, the yellow rockpicker is a 'rockpicker' — a member of a morphologically specialised guild of epilithic aufwuchs feeders. It works over the algal turf that coats the rocks, but it is not primarily a vegetarian scraper: the rockpickers forage chiefly on the animal component of the aufwuchs, picking small insect larvae — Chironomidae (non-biting midge larvae) above all — out from among the filamentous algae with their fine, forceps-like jaws. FishBase records its diet as chironomid larvae, filamentous green algae (Chlorophyta), diatoms and macrophyte material, and estimates a low trophic level around 2.3, consistent with an omnivore that leans toward small invertebrates and algae. This is the same insectivore-leaning aufwuchs niche occupied by many rock cichlids across the African Great Lakes, and within the dense mbipi community of a single rocky island the rockpickers partition the resource finely against neighbouring algae-scrapers, snail-crushers, plankton-pickers and predators.
Mating
Like all Lake Victoria haplochromines, Haplochromis flavus is a polygynous, lek-style breeder with no pair bond: males and females associate only to spawn. Sexually active males hold and defend territories on the rocks — typically on horizontal or gently sloping bottoms — and from these they court passing females and chase off rival males, including males of other rockpicker species. The currency of this courtship is colour: the male's bright nuptial yellow is a visual signal aimed at ripe females, who choose among the displaying males largely on the basis of that coloration. This female choice on male colour is thought to be one of the engines of the flock's explosive speciation, because closely related species are often kept reproductively separate chiefly by differences in male nuptial hue rather than by any barrier of habitat or geography. Crucially, the whole system depends on clear water: in turbid conditions females can no longer discriminate male colours reliably, and the sexual selection that normally keeps species apart breaks down.
Breeding
Haplochromis flavus is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared across the entire Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. After a male's courtship over his rocky territory the female lays a small clutch of eggs on the substrate and immediately takes them up into her mouth; she is fertilised by the classic haplochromine 'egg-spot' mechanism, in which she snaps at the orange ovoid spots on the male's anal fin and takes in his milt as he releases it. From that point the male has no further role. The female carries the developing eggs and larvae in her buccal cavity, fasting through an incubation of roughly two to three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, which she may continue to shelter in her mouth when danger threatens. Specific fecundity for Haplochromis flavus has not been published, but small rock-dwelling Lake Victoria haplochromines of this size typically produce modest clutches on the order of a few dozen eggs — small broods being the trade-off for the protection that oral incubation affords. No artificial spawning trigger is needed in the wild; breeding tracks the warm, stable conditions of the littoral year-round.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis flavus is essentially an ichthyologist's and specialist's fish rather than a mainstream aquarium cichlid, and it is rarely kept. It has no established presence in the general ornamental trade; the Lake Victoria rockpickers that do circulate are maintained mostly by dedicated keepers of the 'Victoria haps' and by conservation-minded breeding programmes, often under field labels (the 'yellow rockpicker' among them) rather than as a settled trade fish. Anyone keeping it should treat it as a generic mbipi mouthbrooder. That means hard, alkaline, warm water — pH on the alkaline side of neutral (roughly 7.5–8.5), moderate hardness, and temperatures around 75–81 °F — matching the lake; the species and its relatives are reported to thrive and spawn readily even in somewhat harder water than the lake itself. The tank should be built around rockwork that provides territories and line-of-sight breaks, with an open foraging zone; a footprint of at least 47 in is sensible for a colony. The standard approach is one male to several females so that the male's aggression and constant courtship are spread across the group, with subordinate or non-receptive females able to retreat. Diet should be small and varied — quality flake or micro-pellets with regular frozen or live invertebrates (bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp) to honour the natural insectivore-leaning aufwuchs diet. The chief pitfalls are the usual haplochromine ones: male-on-female aggression in too small or too sparsely stocked a tank, and — most important for the integrity of the fish — hybridisation. Because these cichlids interbreed freely when female colour-discrimination is compromised, distinct Victoria species must never be housed together, and a population's locality and identity should be kept scrupulously pure.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis flavus as Least Concern (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, F., de Zeeuw, M.P. & Brooks, E.; population trend unknown). It carries no CITES or CMS listing. That comparatively reassuring category, however, sits against one of the most catastrophic recent histories of any vertebrate fauna: the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock — hundreds of endemic species — was devastated through the late twentieth century by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), by eutrophication, and by the loss of water clarity that accompanied them. For a rockpicker that mates by male colour, the threats the assessment names are pointedly specific: hybridisation driven by decreased water transparency, alongside fishing and harvesting of aquatic resources and agricultural and forestry effluents. As the lake turned turbid, females across many species could no longer tell males apart by hue, the colour-based reproductive barriers between sibling species eroded, and formerly distinct forms began to blur together — a 'speciation reversal' that can erase species without a single fish being caught. The rocky-island rockpickers fared better than the lake's open-water and sand-dwelling haplochromines, which were hit hardest by the Nile perch, and Haplochromis flavus persists at its rocky strongholds; but its long-term security is bound to the clarity and chemistry of Lake Victoria, both of which remain under pressure from a basin supporting tens of millions of people.
