Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis obtusidens was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1928 from Lake Victoria material. The specific name marks its most diagnostic feature: 'large blunt teeth' set on a somewhat massive lower pharyngeal plate, the bone the fish uses to crush hard food. It belongs to the vast Lake Victoria haplochromine flock — the several hundred closely related cichlid species that radiated explosively within the lake — and the genus that contains it has long been taxonomically unstable. In his 1980 monograph on the Victoria haplochromines, P. Humphry Greenwood broke the unwieldy catch-all genus Haplochromis into many smaller genera and placed this species in the subgenus Gaurochromis (Mylacochromis) Greenwood, 1980, alongside its close relative Haplochromis empodisma (which he put in the nominal subgenus Gaurochromis). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes follows that scheme and lists the fish as Gaurochromis obtusidens. FishBase and many recent workers, however, keep all the lacustrine and riverine haplochromines of the Lake Victoria catchment in a broadly defined Haplochromis pending a complete modern revision, following van Oijen and colleagues (1991, 1996). The site retains the Haplochromis heading on that basis, with Gaurochromis (Mylacochromis) obtusidens (Trewavas, 1928) recognised as the standing synonym. Greenwood's revisionary work and the subsequent Leiden taxonomy (Witte, van Oijen and collaborators) remain the foundational references for the species.
Morphology
Haplochromis obtusidens is a small cichlid, reaching about 4.5 in in standard length (the largest recorded specimen in the CLOFFA checklist), so under 5 inches; most individuals are smaller. In overall form it is a typical generalised Victoria haplochromine — a moderately deep, laterally compressed body with a rounded snout and the single continuous dorsal fin shared across the flock. Its defining feature is internal: the lower pharyngeal jaw, the second set of jaws in the throat that cichlids use to process food, carries enlarged, blunt-crowned teeth on a thickened, somewhat massive bony plate. This is the classic dentition of a durophage — a crusher of hard-shelled prey — and it is the source of both the scientific name (blunt-toothed) and the species' partly molluscivorous habits. As in essentially all haplochromines, breeding males develop the brighter nuptial colours and the egg-spots (ocelli) on the anal fin that figure in spawning, while females and non-breeding fish are a more cryptic silvery-brown; detailed live-colour descriptions are scarce because the species has rarely been photographed alive and no image accompanies its FishBase record.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the great shallow equatorial lake shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and has been recorded in surveys across all three riparian countries (Greenwood 1981); the IUCN estimates its extent of occurrence at roughly 68,497 mi². It is a fish of the littoral and sub-littoral bottom, occurring over shallow water with a soft mud bottom, with a few specimens taken over sand. FishBase gives a depth range down to about 59 ft, with the species usually found shallower than about 33 ft. Lake Victoria is warm, hard and alkaline rather than the soft acidic water of many tropical cichlid habitats: surface temperatures typically run about 73–81 °F and pH sits on the alkaline side, broadly 7.2–9.0, with well-buffered, moderately mineralised water. Since the second half of the twentieth century the lake's inshore waters have also become markedly more turbid and, at depth, oxygen-poor, as eutrophication from a growing human population has driven algal blooms — an environmental shift that bears directly on this species' fate.
Feeding
Haplochromis obtusidens is a bottom-feeding invertivore with a dual diet that has caused it to be classified in more than one trophic guild. Stomach analyses summarised in FishBase show it feeds mainly on insects, especially larval Diptera (midge larvae), and also on molluscs — particularly the small bivalve Corbicula, with some gastropods such as Melanoides taken as well. The IUCN assessment records the same ambiguity, classifying the species as an insectivore that is 'morphologically and ecologically partly molluscivore'. The morphological half of that statement is the blunt, robust pharyngeal teeth on a strengthened plate: jaws built to crush snail and clam shells. In the Leiden trophic-group framework for the Victoria flock (Witte & van Oijen 1990), obtusidens sits at the boundary between the insectivore and molluscivore categories rather than squarely in either. Its calculated trophic level is about 3.1, consistent with a small predator of benthic invertebrates rather than a fish-eater. Functionally it is one of the many haplochromines that worked the lake's soft bottoms, helping convert burrowing invertebrate biomass into food for larger predators.
Mating
No courtship or pair-formation behaviour has been described specifically for Haplochromis obtusidens, and the species has not, as far as the literature records, been kept or bred in aquaria where such behaviour could be watched. What can be said is drawn from the well-studied biology of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock as a whole, to which it belongs. These fish are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond: a ripe male takes up a small territory or display site, intensifies his nuptial colours, and courts passing females with lateral displays and quivering, presenting the egg-spots on his anal fin. A receptive female spawns with him and then takes sole charge of the brood. Mate choice in the flock is strongly visual, keyed to male colour, which makes these cichlids unusually sensitive to anything that clouds the water — a point that returns under conservation.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in detail for Haplochromis obtusidens itself; FishBase records simply that it is a mouthbrooder. Its reproductive biology can be inferred with confidence from the rest of the Lake Victoria radiation, which is uniformly composed of maternal (female-only) mouthbrooders. After spawning, the female gathers the fertilised eggs into her mouth — drawn in as she nips at the male's anal-fin egg-spots — and broods the clutch in her buccal cavity through hatching and the early free-swimming stage, taking no food for the duration. Clutch sizes are not published for this species; Lake Victoria haplochromines of its size typically carry only modest broods, on the order of a few dozen eggs (commonly around 20–60), a small clutch traded against the safety of oral incubation. The young are released as comparatively large, well-developed fry and may shelter back in the mother's mouth when threatened in the days after first release. Parental care is entirely maternal and ends soon after the fry become independent.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis obtusidens is essentially never kept in the aquarium hobby. It has no established presence in the trade, no common name, and no body of captive-husbandry experience to draw on; it is a scientifically known but horticulturally obscure member of the Victoria flock, and the species has scarcely even been photographed alive. This profile therefore makes no husbandry claims it cannot support. Were wild-sourced or conservation-population fish ever to reach a specialist keeper, the general requirements of small Lake Victoria haplochromines would apply: hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 7.5–8.5, moderate to high mineral content) at about 75–81 °F, a sand or fine-gravel bottom suiting a benthic feeder, and a diet rich in invertebrate foods. As a partial mollusc-crusher it would benefit from foods that exercise the pharyngeal jaws, and as a haplochromine it would show the typical male territorial aggression that makes these fish best kept either as a single male with several females or in a busy group that diffuses bullying. None of this should be read as a recommendation to seek the fish out: it is a Data Deficient, possibly very rare lake endemic, and its proper place is the lake, not the home aquarium.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis obtusidens as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw & Brooks; reviewed by Darwall & Smith; reference T8957A12939675). The category reflects how little is known: no information exists on its past or present population density, and the assessors note it had been seen only once by the Haplochromis Ecology Survey Team — in 1984, in Napoleon Gulf at the Ugandan north of the lake. Tellingly, the species had earlier been listed as Extinct in the 1996 Red List (as Gaurochromis obtusidens), so the current Data Deficient status represents cautious uncertainty rather than confirmed security. The pressures behind that history are the same ones that devastated the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock in the 1980s. The chief threat is predation by the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large piscivore whose population explosion is implicated in the loss or collapse of a great many endemic cichlids; the assessment treats this as a potentially reversible pressure now that perch numbers have fallen. A second, subtler threat is eutrophication: increased turbidity from algal blooms and sediment runoff degrades the clear-water visual cues these fish rely on for mate recognition, which can break down the reproductive barriers between species and drive hybridisation (Mrosso et al. 2003). The species is also caught incidentally in lake fisheries, though not specifically targeted. The assessors call for basic survey work to establish whether, and where, obtusidens still persists in the lake.
