The genus name combines the Greek hemi (half) and tainia (band or stripe) with chromis, the classical suffix for perch-like fishes — a reference to the partial or broken lateral striping seen in several of its species, including the well-known Hemitaeniochromis urotaenia. The specific epithet brachyrhynchus derives from the Greek brachys (short) and rhynchos (snout), distinguishing this species from its more extremely long-snouted relatives within the same genus. As a predatory haplochromine it should be kept with tankmates too large to be swallowed, and offered a varied diet of quality pellets supplemented with meaty frozen foods such as chironomid larvae or Mysis shrimp.
