Taxonomy & naming
Copadichromis sp. "Likomae Masinje" is not itself formally described. Its trade name links it to Copadichromis likomae, described by the fisheries biologist T. D. Iles in 1960 from Likoma Island, in the northern part of Lake Malawi, in his review of the zooplankton-feeding Haplochromis of what was then called Lake Nyasa; the name later passed through Cyrtocara before settling in Copadichromis when Eccles and Trewavas erected that genus in 1989. Gome, where this population was recorded, lies well south of Likoma Island, and the malawi.si database documents this specific "likomae masinje" geographic colour form there without treating it as a confirmed identification of the nominal species. Copadichromis likomae itself is now understood to range more widely around the lake than the FishBase-listed type locality alone would suggest, but the honest statement here is that this population’s exact taxonomic relationship to Copadichromis likomae — the same species at a different site, or a distinct relative — has not been formally resolved.
Morphology
This form is a small to mid-sized, fusiform utaka. Nominal Copadichromis likomae reaches about 5.5 in total length by FishBase measurement, and this "likomae masinje" population is reported a little larger, to roughly 6 in — one of the few concrete points of difference documented for it. Colour, if this population matches the nominal species, follows the pattern recorded for Copadichromis likomae: breeding males develop a darker overall colour with contrasting lighter areas on the head and fins, while females and non-breeding fish stay a plainer silvery grey, typically marked with a pair of dark flank spots. Because so many Copadichromis look alike outside breeding dress, colour alone is not a reliable way to confirm this population’s identity, and no independent confirmation of its exact pattern is available here.
Habitat
The population is documented from Gome, in the southern part of Lake Malawi. Nominal Copadichromis likomae is an inshore, benthopelagic fish, staying close to rocky habitat year-round and feeding and shoaling in the open water just off the rocks and over adjacent sand, at documented depths of roughly 16–82 ft. If this population follows the same ecology, it would occupy a similar inshore zone near Gome’s reef structure. Water conditions follow the lake-wide standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As a specialist zooplanktivore, this population is expected to feed the way Copadichromis likomae does: working the open water just off the reef, using large eyes to spot individual copepods and other drifting prey, and a protrusible, suction-style mouth to pick them from the current. Utaka in general are a key link in Lake Malawi’s open-water food web, and the shoaling habit that makes them ecologically important also makes them a target for local net fisheries. No feeding study specific to the Gome population has been published.
Mating
Mating in nominal Copadichromis likomae follows the utaka pattern: males move to the bottom and establish spawning sites at the interface of rock and sand, building a sand "castle," or bower, entirely without incorporating rock into the structure, and display from it in breeding colour to draw females moving through in loose schools. Malawi’s IUCN assessment for the nominal species specifically describes this bower-building as taking place in the intermediate habitat between rock and sand rather than on open sand flats or against bare rock face, a fairly precise ecological niche for the breeding phase of an otherwise wide-ranging, midwater-shoaling fish. This population is expected to follow the same pattern, though no courtship observations specific to Gome have been published.
Breeding
Copadichromis sp. "Likomae Masinje" is expected to be a maternal mouthbrooder, like the rest of the genus. A female spawns in batches at the male’s bower, taking each batch of eggs into her mouth immediately, and is drawn to the egg-spots on his anal fin, taking in the milt that fertilises the clutch she already holds. She then carries and broods the developing eggs and larvae alone, without feeding, for roughly three to four weeks — the nominal species is documented releasing fry into very shallow water among rocks and plants, sheltered nursery habitat that this population may share by analogy, though that has not been confirmed for it specifically. Clutch sizes are not well documented for Copadichromis likomae or this population; utaka of this size typically carry a few dozen eggs.
In the aquarium
Copadichromis sp. "Likomae Masinje" is rarely seen in the trade, usually circulating as a locality fish for keepers already interested in Copadichromis diversity. Like the nominal species, it needs space above all else: a tank of at least 71–78.5 in in length is a practical minimum for a colony, and longer is meaningfully better, since utaka are restless midwater swimmers and cramped quarters are the most common mistake made with this group. Water chemistry must match Lake Malawi — hard, alkaline, and well-buffered, with a pH of roughly 7.8–8.6 and moderate to high general hardness — and soft or acidic water causes chronic stress that leaves fish prone to the bacterial infections known in the hobby as Malawi bloat. Decoration should provide open swimming volume with a sand substrate and modest rock at one end for potential bower sites, rather than dense rockwork throughout. A single male with two or three females is a workable single-species colony; mixing multiple utaka together is harder, since males of related species will often fight, and requires a genuinely large tank. Diet should be varied, and tankmates should be calm haps or peacocks rather than aggressive mbuna.
Conservation
Copadichromis sp. "Likomae Masinje" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed or unconfirmed form it has no Red List status of its own. The nominal species it is compared to, Copadichromis likomae, is assessed as Least Concern, with the one flagged pressure being fishing: it is a food fish caught by utaka fishermen rather than primarily an ornamental target. If this Gome population is confirmed as the same species or a close relative, it would plausibly share that pressure, along with the broader, basin-wide concerns facing Lake Malawi — sediment and nutrient loading, fishing intensity, and climate-driven changes to the lake’s stratification. The honest summary for the population itself is that it is unassessed.
