Taxonomy & naming
Iodotropheus stuartgranti belongs to the small genus Iodotropheus, erected by Oliver and Loiselle in 1972 for Iodotropheus sprengerae, the "rusty cichlid," long one of the most recognisable and easygoing mbuna in the aquarium trade. For two decades sprengerae stood as the genus's only member, but as more of Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline was surveyed it became clear that several geographically separate, subtly different populations had been lumped together under that one name. A revision of the genus split out additional species — including Iodotropheus stuartgranti — recognising differences in coloration and body proportions between populations from different stretches of coast. The species epithet honours Stuart M. Grant, the Malawi-based fish exporter whose collecting operation at Salima supplied much of the early aquarium trade with wild Lake Malawi cichlids and helped put many of these small, undramatic rock-dwellers on the hobby's radar in the first place. As with its congeners, Iodotropheus stuartgranti is accepted as a valid species in the Catalog of Fishes, the reference this atlas follows for Malawi cichlid nomenclature.
Morphology
Like its relatives, Iodotropheus stuartgranti is a small, compact mbuna built on the same general plan as the genus type: a moderately deep but not heavy body, a blunt, rounded snout, and a small, slightly underslung mouth suited to browsing rather than biting. The genus name itself nods to this look — a fancied resemblance to the Lake Tanganyika grazer Tropheus, combined with the fish's characteristic violet-tinged sheen. Coloration is the main character used to separate stuartgranti from its close relatives: a muted, iridescent purple-brown to rusty base colour overlaying the body, often with a faint darker mask through the eye and subdued fin colouration rather than the bold barring or bright monochrome seen in many other mbuna. Males typically show the more saturated colour and can develop egg-spot markings on the anal fin; females and juveniles are plainer. Adult size is modest for a mbuna, broadly in line with the roughly 3 in reported for the genus type, though exact measurements specific to this species are not well documented outside the specialist literature.
Habitat
Iodotropheus stuartgranti is known from the Gome area on Lake Malawi's western shore, one of a string of rocky points and reefs along that coast that have each turned up their own locally distinct mbuna populations. Like other Iodotropheus, it is a rock-dweller, living among the boulders and crevices of the littoral zone rather than over open sand, in the shallow-to-moderate depths typical of mbuna habitat. The water at these depths is the lake's characteristic hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated column — warm and thermally stable through most of the year. As a locality-restricted rock endemic, its confirmed range is narrow, and like many Malawi mbuna it is unlikely to move far from its home reef, since open sand and deep water act as effective barriers to dispersal for fish this tied to rock.
Feeding
Iodotropheus species are aufwuchs grazers, feeding on the dense mat of algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates that coats sunlit rock surfaces throughout the mbuna zone. The genus's blunt, rounded mouth and comparatively unspecialised dentition suit this browsing lifestyle better than the sharp, hooked bites used by more aggressively territorial algae-farming mbuna, and Iodotropheus has a reputation among Malawi cichlid keepers as one of the least combative genera over feeding grounds. Iodotropheus stuartgranti almost certainly follows the same pattern as its congeners, working rock faces methodically for the algal film and associated micro-invertebrates rather than actively hunting, though feeding behaviour specific to this species has not been separately documented in the literature available here.
Mating
As in other Lake Malawi mbuna, reproduction in Iodotropheus stuartgranti is expected to follow a polygynous, male-territorial pattern: colour-bearing males hold and defend small patches of rock as feeding and spawning sites, and receptive females move between territories to select a mate. Iodotropheus as a genus is noted for comparatively mild aggression relative to many mbuna, with males sparring over territory boundaries through display and chasing more than sustained combat. Courtship in the genus follows the standard haplochromine sequence — a displaying male leading a receptive female toward his territory with quivering and lateral posturing before spawning. Breeding
Iodotropheus stuartgranti is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is universal among Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. Following courtship at the male's territory, the female lays a small clutch of eggs, takes them into her mouth, and is fertilised as she draws in milt released by the male near his egg-spot markings. She then broods the eggs and subsequent larvae in her buccal cavity for roughly three to four weeks, a period during which she feeds little if at all, before releasing free-swimming fry able to fend for themselves. No further parental care follows release. Clutch sizes have not been documented specifically for this species; by analogy with the small-bodied Iodotropheus sprengerae, a modest brood of perhaps a few dozen eggs would be typical for a fish of this size.
In the aquarium
Iodotropheus stuartgranti is a scarce find in the trade compared with its well-established relative Iodotropheus sprengerae, but where it is available it should suit a similar setup: a rock-built Malawi mbuna tank with plenty of caves and broken sightlines, a footprint of at least 39.5–47 in, and hard, alkaline water matching the lake — temperature around 75–82 °F, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderate to high general hardness. Diet should lean vegetable, since this is an algae grazer by nature: a good spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, with occasional small invertebrate treats rather than a protein-heavy diet, which predisposes Malawi cichlids to bloat.
Iodotropheus as a genus has a reputation as one of the calmer, more forgiving mbuna, making it a reasonable choice for a mixed Malawi community rather than a strict single-species setup, though it should still be kept as a group — one male with several females — to spread any territorial and courtship attention. Because it is easily confused with its close relatives by casual observation, keepers who want to preserve pure locality stock should avoid mixing it with other Iodotropheus species or undocumented "sp." forms in the same tank.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List status for Iodotropheus stuartgranti is confirmed here, and none should be assumed from its relationship to better-known congeners. As a rock-restricted endemic known from a limited stretch of Lake Malawi's western shore, it shares the general vulnerabilities of narrow-range mbuna: any localised habitat disturbance, sedimentation, or intensive ornamental collection at its home reef carries disproportionate risk for a population that may not exist anywhere else. The wider pressures facing Lake Malawi — shoreline development, agricultural runoff and sedimentation, and fishing pressure across the basin — apply to this species as they do to all of the lake's rock-dwelling cichlids, even though its specific conservation status has not been established in the sources consulted for this profile.
