Cynotilapia sp. "Elongatus Chitimba" is not a formally described species. It carries no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The placeholder name follows standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna: the genus Cynotilapia, the qualifier "sp." marking undescribed status, and a compound trade name combining a body-shape descriptor, "Elongatus," with the locality "Chitimba," a bay on the far northern Malawian shore. Cynotilapia was erected by Regan in 1922 for the type species C. afra and now includes roughly a dozen described species alongside numerous undescribed locality forms, most documented through the field work of Ad Konings. An "elongatus"-type build is unusual within this genus, whose members are typically more compact-bodied than the slender elongatus-complex species found in other mbuna genera such as Chindongo; this population's more elongate shape is the character the trade name specifically calls out. Until formally described, no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
Cynotilapia species generally have a compact, torpedo-shaped body and a blunt head bearing the strong, somewhat canine-like teeth from which the genus takes its name. This Chitimba Bay population departs from that norm with a notably more elongate, slender body, per the trade name. Genus-typical size runs roughly 2.5–3.5 in total length. Its precise coloration has not been documented in detail in the sources available to this account and should not be guessed at; many Cynotilapia species show males in bright blue with black markings such as a dorsal blotch or vertical bars, alongside barred or plain females, but whether this specific form follows that pattern is not confirmed here. Males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin, as in other mbuna.
Habitat
Cynotilapia sp. "Elongatus Chitimba" is documented from Chitimba Bay, on the far northern Malawian shore, including a separate record noted from deeper water within the same bay — suggesting the population may occupy a range of depths rather than a single narrow band. Cynotilapia species generally inhabit rocky habitat, often at the margins with open sand, and some species forage into midwater above rocks for drifting zooplankton and loose algae rather than staying tight to the rock face the way strict Aufwuchs grazers do. Water conditions follow the Lake Malawi norm: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its range beyond Chitimba Bay is not established.
Feeding
Cynotilapia species are generally understood to feed on a mix of loose algae, phytoplankton, and zooplankton picked from the water just above rocky substrate, a diet that sits between the strict algae-scraping of many mbuna and the open-water plankton feeding of genera like Copadichromis. Their comparatively strong, canine-like teeth, the genus's namesake feature, are thought to aid this mixed feeding strategy. No feeding study specific to this Chitimba Bay population has been published; this account follows the well-documented genus pattern.
Mating
Cynotilapia sp. "Elongatus Chitimba" is expected to follow the polygynous, lek-like mating system typical of Lake Malawi mbuna, with no pair bond. Males hold and defend small rock territories, displaying to attract passing females while excluding rival males. Females move between territories and select a courting male before spawning at his site. No courtship study specific to this population has been published; this account is inferred from the well-documented mating system shared across Cynotilapia and the wider mbuna assemblage.
Breeding
Like other Cynotilapia, this form is a maternal mouthbrooder. Following spawning, the female takes the eggs into her mouth; contact with the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, as she attempts to gather what appear to be further eggs, triggers fertilisation of the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during that period, before releasing free-swimming fry capable of independent feeding. There is no paternal or biparental care beyond this. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific form but is expected to be modest, in line with similarly sized Cynotilapia.

A rockwork-dominated setup with caves and broken sightlines suits its territorial nature, and a sand-to-rock transition zone is a reasonable addition given the reported deeper-water record within Chitimba Bay, which may reflect some habitat flexibility. A footprint of at least 39.5–47 in is a sensible minimum, stocked as one male with several females to spread territorial pressure. Water should follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and alkaline, with regular partial water changes to control nitrate. Diet should include both a vegetable-based staple, such as a spirulina flake or pellet, and small live or frozen zooplankton-type foods like daphnia or cyclops, reflecting the genus's mixed algae-and-zooplankton diet; fatty foods should be limited, as they predispose Malawi cichlids to bloat.

As an undescribed form without a published scientific name, it has no Red List status of any kind — a statement about its taxonomic situation, not about its wild population safety. As a locality-restricted northern-lake mbuna, it faces the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid fauna: ornamental collection, inshore habitat disturbance, and sediment runoff from the surrounding catchment. It should be described as unassessed rather than assigned any inferred status.
