Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Maylandia pulpican is a small, sharply patterned mbuna from the islands and Mozambican shores of southern Lake Malawi. Males wear a base coat of steel-blue to near-black, broken by bold vertical bars, and defend territories with a combativeness that the describer memorialized in the fish's name — pulpican is a Breton word for the goblin-dwarves of Armorican folklore, creatures famous for harassing anything that crosses their path. Like the best of the mbunas, it rewards a well-set-up aquarium with constant activity and, for a keeper who pays attention to stocking, straightforward breeding.

Taxonomy & naming

Patrick Tawil described this mbuna in 2002 as Cynotilapia pulpican, placing it provisionally in Cynotilapia because the genus had historically accommodated small conical-toothed zebra-type mbunas and its nomenclatural boundaries were unsettled pending re-examination of the type of Hemichromis afer. The original description was published in the French cichlid periodical L'An Cichlidé (vol. 2, pp. 72–82). The species was already known to aquarists at that point under the trade placeholder Pseudotropheus sp. 'Likoma kingsizei', a name that had circulated in European and North American hobby circles for at least a decade before formal description. In his abstract Tawil noted that the new fish is closest to Cynotilapia axelrodi (Burgess, 1976) and to Cynotilapia sp. 'lion', despite exhibiting the bicuspid dentition more typical of Maylandia.

The subsequent generic history is tangled by the long-running Maylandia versus Metriaclima dispute. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (updated May 2026) lists the species as valid under Metriaclima pulpican per Ciccotto et al. (2011) and Konings (2016), but treats Metriaclima as a junior synonym of Maylandia, so the current status resolves to Maylandia pulpican (Tawil, 2002). FishBase and malawi.si concur. Keepers will still encounter the name Metriaclima pulpican in older club literature and dealer listings; the species is the same fish either way.

The holotype (MNHN 2002-0839, an adult male) was collected in August 2001 at Membe Point, on the rocky shore of Maingano Island, near Likoma Island, in Malawian waters of Lake Malawi. Eleven paratypes (MNHN 2002-0831 through 0841) were collected from the same locality. Note that Maingano Island itself is sometimes called 'Maingano' in the hobby after the entirely different species Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos, which is known by that trade name — the two fish share the same island but are not closely related.

Morphology

Maylandia pulpican is a compact, moderately deep-bodied mbuna. FishBase records a maximum of 3 in SL for the holotype series, but malawi.si's field notes, drawing on Ad Konings's in-situ observations, indicate that wild adults typically reach around 3.5 in total length, while captive fish given liberal feeding can push toward 6 in TL — a figure that aquarists should treat as an outlier rather than the norm. Aquarium Glaser's wholesale sheet describes the trade size as 2.5–3 in, consistent with the majority of documented wild specimens. The discrepancy between the type-series SL and field TL is normal for cichlids: standard length omits the tail, and aquarium enrichment reliably pushes size beyond field maxima.

The key diagnostic feature is the colour pattern of dominant males: a steel-blue to near-black ground colour overlaid by a series of bold, dark vertical bars — usually eight or nine — that run from just behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle. In high-intensity individuals the bars nearly merge, giving the fish an overall very dark appearance with lighter inter-bar areas catching the light as blue-grey. The dorsal fin carries a black submarginal band with a pale or yellowish outer edge and scattered egg-dummy ocelli on the soft portion; the anal fin is dark with 3–6 yellow egg-dummy ocelli; pelvic fins are largely black. The concave (slightly scooped) frontal profile typical of the Maylandia zebra group is present.

Females and subordinate males are greyish-brown with a weaker, brownish version of the barred pattern; females often develop a warm yellow suffusion on the anal fin and sometimes a bluish tinge across the flanks as they mature. Females also carry smaller anal-fin ocelli and shorter fins overall. The sexual dimorphism is therefore clear: males are larger, darker, more intensely patterned, and carry the longest dorsal and pelvic fins; females remain smaller and subdued throughout life.

Populations from the Mozambican coast (Londo Bay, Lumbaulo) tend to show thinner vertical bars and a somewhat paler background compared with the insular Malawian populations around Maingano and Likoma islands. These are treated as location variants rather than separate taxa, though the consistency of the difference is worth noting for keepers interested in locality purity.

Habitat

Maylandia pulpican is endemic to Lake Malawi and confined to a relatively compact range centred on the Likoma archipelago and adjacent Mozambican coastline. Confirmed populations occur at Maingano Island (the type locality), Likoma Island, Mbamba Island, Masimbwe Island, and Mbuzi Island, all clustered in the south-central part of the lake's eastern basin. On the Mozambican shore, populations are known from Londo Bay and Lumbaulo, roughly 31–62 mi to the south-southwest of Likoma.

Within this range the species occupies what Konings calls the 'intermediate zone': the transitional band between pure rocky reef and open sand flat, where small and medium boulders sit scattered on a sandy substrate. FishBase summarizes the habitat as 'rocks and sandy habitats; between 4 and 98 ft deep,' a depth range confirmed by malawi.si's field data for the Maingano population, which specifies that individuals are most commonly encountered at 33–66 ft, with the shallowest reliable records at around 13 ft.

Lake Malawi's chemistry is highly stable and alkaline. Surface-layer water runs at pH 7.7–8.6, hardness typically 4–6 dGH (carbonate hardness ~6–8 dKH), conductivity around 210–240 µS/cm, and water temperature at the depths this species occupies ranges from approximately 75 °F in the cooler southern summer upwelling season to 82–84 °F near the surface during the warmer months. These parameters are well-documented in the limnological literature (Chavula et al. 2023, Vollmer et al. 2005) and are essentially the same across the species' known range, since the Likoma–Mozambique coast stretch experiences similar thermal and chemical conditions.

Feeding

In the wild, Maylandia pulpican is primarily a grazer of aufwuchs — the mixed community of algae, diatoms, detritus, and small invertebrates that colonizes exposed rock surfaces — though it also exploits plankton when zooplankton concentrations are high in the water column. This dual strategy makes it somewhat more flexible than strict aufwuchs scrapers like Labeotropheus, and Konings's field observations (cited in Borstein 2002 and malawi.si) specifically note the species feeding on algae from rock faces as well as picking from the water column. The short, bicuspid teeth of the Maylandia zebra group are adapted for cropping attached algal films rather than the more specialized incisor-like teeth of planktivores such as the Cynotilapia lineage, which is part of why Konings argued — against Tawil's original placement — that mouth morphology and feeding mode place this fish squarely in Maylandia rather than Cynotilapia.

For aquarium feeding, a predominantly plant-based diet is essential. Keepers who provide only protein-rich carnivore foods risk bloat, a condition to which mbuna are notoriously susceptible due to the long intestinal tract adapted for processing high-cellulose aufwuchs. Good quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, supplemented with blanched vegetables, forms the core diet; live or frozen brine shrimp can be offered occasionally but should not be a staple.

Mating

Male Maylandia pulpican are strongly territorial and organize themselves around spawning sites — shallow depressions excavated in the sand at or alongside a rock, which the male clears and actively defends. Konings's field observations, summarized in Borstein's account and the malawi.si species page, describe an interesting behavioural nuance: a territorial male does not forage from the rock directly above his spawning pit. Instead he treats the overlying rock surface as part of his display territory rather than a feeding station, and will chase away females that are browsing it without spawning intent — the rock serves as a visual beacon for courting rather than as a food patch. This is somewhat atypical behaviour in mbuna and gives the species a degree of site fidelity that makes them watchable in the aquarium.

Dominant males display an intensified version of their normal barred pattern during courtship and raise the dorsal fin to its full extent. Aggression between territorial males is high but is mainly directed at conspecifics; other species are usually tolerated unless they intrude too closely on the spawning pit. At Maingano Island multiple territorial males can coexist at relatively short distances, indicating that territories can be maintained at small scale when the rock structure permits multiple distinct pit sites.

Breeding

Maylandia pulpican is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all members of the genus. After spawning in the male's pit, the female collects the eggs in her mouth and retreats from the male's territory. She carries the brood for approximately three weeks at the temperatures typical of Lake Malawi (77–82 °F); keeper accounts from Sam Borstein and others consistently report a three-week hold. Females are described as 'excellent holders' in captivity — they rarely strip eggs prematurely even under aquarium conditions, which makes raising a clutch to free-swimming fry comparatively straightforward once a spawn occurs.

Clutch size in the aquarium is reported at approximately 30 fry (Borstein), consistent with the relatively small body size of the species. No published fecundity data from wild nest counts exists in the literature reviewed; the aquarium figure is the best available and is flagged as such. The fry are small at release but accept newly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered flake food from the outset and grow steadily if fed multiple times daily.

Maturity is reached at approximately 2 inches (about 2 in) total length in captivity (Borstein). In the wild the timing is presumably comparable given the relatively constant lake temperatures, but no published age-at-maturity data is available for this species.

In the aquarium

Maylandia pulpican is a moderately demanding mbuna that suits experienced keepers rather than beginners — not because it is fragile, but because its aggression and rigid water-chemistry requirements leave little margin for error. A single male with two or three females is the minimum sensible unit; a group of five to eight fish (one male, remainder females) in a 120-litre aquarium is workable, though a 200-litre or larger tank with aggressive surface area gives the male more options for territory and reduces female harassment. The footprint matters more than depth: long, wide tanks allow males to establish a spawning territory at one end without trapping females in a corner. Aquascaping should fill roughly two-thirds of the bottom with stacked rocks, slate or smooth boulders arranged to create multiple discrete caves and sightline breaks. Open sand in the remaining third gives females escape routes and the male a place to excavate a shallow spawning pit. No plants are necessary; most robust species struggle in the lake's chemistry and the fish will shred them anyway.

Water quality must closely reflect Lake Malawi conditions. Aim for pH 7.8–8.6, total hardness around 10–20 dGH, carbonate hardness 8–12 dKH, conductivity roughly 200–250 µS/cm, and temperature 75–82 °F. These values are not difficult to maintain in hard tap water with a pH buffer or crushed coral substrate; they are fatal to ignore. Soft, acidic water suppresses colour, stresses the fish, and raises disease susceptibility. Efficient biological filtration and a regular 20–25% weekly water change are non-negotiable: the ammonia load from a carnivore-heavy diet in a crowded mbuna tank accumulates fast, and elevated nitrate is frequently implicated in Malawi bloat. Good turnover — at least five to eight times the tank volume per hour — keeps oxygenation high and mimics the wave-washed, well-oxygenated rocky shallows the species occupies in the wild.

Diet is where many keepers go wrong with this species and mbuna generally. Maylandia pulpican is an aufwuchs grazer with a long intestine adapted for processing algae and plant fibre; a high-protein carnivore diet causes fermentation in the gut that is the primary driver of Malawi bloat (a rapid, often fatal internal bacterial proliferation). The staple diet should be spirulina-based flake or pellet, ideally with a crude protein content below 40% and meaningful plant content. Blanched spinach, courgette, or nori sheets are well-accepted supplements. Frozen brine shrimp or cyclops can be offered once a week as enrichment; beefheart, bloodworm, or any predominantly animal-protein food should be avoided entirely. Feed small amounts two to three times daily rather than large single feeds — this suits the species' continuous grazing habit and reduces competitive stress at feeding time.

Tankmates require careful thought. Maylandia pulpican is aggressive toward conspecific males and toward any similarly sized, similarly patterned fish — including other zebra-group mbunas such as Maylandia zebra, Maylandia estherae, and Cynotilapia species. Combining it with these is strongly inadvisable: hybridization is a well-documented risk across the zebra complex, and even without actual hybridization the male will relentlessly harass closely related rivals. Compatible mbuna tankmates are best chosen from distantly related, differently shaped species — Labidochromis caeruleus, Iodotropheus sprengerae, or some Pseudotropheus species — combined with robust open-water peacocks (Aulonocara) or haps if the tank is large enough to give each group distinct spatial zones. Avoid Melanochromis species, which are similarly aggressive. Keep no more than one male of each mbuna species in any tank unless the aquarium exceeds 105 US gal with very complex rockwork.

Breeding is straightforward once the colony is stable and chemistry is correct. The male courts vigorously and spawning is frequent; a dominant male will spawn repeatedly if females are in good condition. The female carries the brood for approximately three weeks and is an unusually reliable holder in captivity — premature egg dropping is uncommon. To raise fry, either move the brooding female to a species-only holding tank two weeks into the incubation period, or provide a thickly rocked section of the display where fry can disperse and hide on release. Released fry accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and finely crushed flake from the first day of free-swimming. Remove the female from the main display promptly once she releases fry, as a gravid or recently stripped female is vulnerable to male aggression. Growth is steady at Malawi temperatures; juveniles reach sexual maturity at roughly 2 in total length.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Maylandia pulpican as Least Concern (LC), assessed 20 June 2018, with Ad Konings as a contributor to the assessment. The species' restricted range — confined to a handful of islands and a short stretch of Mozambican coast — means it is an island-cluster endemic rather than a lake-wide species, but within those reefs it appears stable and is collected regularly by the ornamental trade without signs of commercial depletion. It holds no CITES listing.

The broader picture for Lake Malawi is less comfortable. Chavula et al. (2023) document an array of anthropogenic and climatic stressors affecting the Lake Malawi/Niassa/Nyasa basin, including increased sedimentation and nutrient loading from agricultural expansion across the catchment, warmer surface temperatures associated with climate change, and declining lake levels in drought years that expose shallow rocky habitat. Sedimentation is of particular concern for intermediate-zone species like Maylandia pulpican: studies on Lake Malawi cichlids (Delvaux 1995, reviewed in Chavula et al. 2023) have found that fine sediment depositing on rocky substrates smothers aufwuchs and forces rock-dwelling cichlids to abandon silted areas. The Likoma archipelago sits in the relatively well-protected central basin, somewhat insulated from the heavy deforestation affecting the northern shorelines, but the Mozambican coast populations at Londo and Lumbaulo face greater watershed pressure from adjacent agricultural land.

The ornamental trade collects this species from Malawian and Mozambican waters, and it is well established in captive breeding programs in Europe and North America — a buffer against any future collection pressure, though the captive stock does not directly protect wild populations or their habitat.
