Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Big Head" has no formal scientific description, no describing author, and no FishBase entry; the trade name is an informal field label reflecting a proportionally large head relative to body size, a feature notable enough among the mostly slender-headed Lethrinops to become its identifying trait in the hobby. The genus Lethrinops was erected by Regan in 1922 and comprehensively revised by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989, whose classification split off the related genera Taeniolethrinops and Tramitichromis but still left many populations, including forms like this one, without a formal description. The South East Arm of Lake Malawi has produced numerous distinct, informally named Lethrinops populations over the decades, and "Big Head" should be treated as its own undescribed form rather than assumed identical to any other locally recorded Lethrinops.
Morphology
The defining feature implied by the trade name is a head that reads as disproportionately large or robust relative to the body, distinguishing this form at a glance from the narrower-headed Lethrinops typical of the genus. No further colour description or formal measurement has been published for this specific population, and none is invented here; body form otherwise follows the genus-typical elongated, fusiform Lethrinops shape, with the oblique, protrusible mouth used for sand-sifting. Adult size is presumed genus-typical pending a formal account.
Habitat
The only recorded locality for this form is the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a broad, relatively shallow embayment at the lake's southern end known for extensive open sand and silt flats that support a diverse assemblage of sand-dwelling haplochromines, including several other undescribed Lethrinops populations. Like other sand-dwelling members of the genus, this form is expected to occupy open sand rather than rock, at depths that vary by species across the Arm's broad, gently sloping bottom. Water conditions there follow Lake Malawi's typical profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
This form is presumed to be a sand-sifting invertivore in the manner typical of Lethrinops: patrolling close to the substrate, taking mouthfuls of sand, and filtering out small invertebrates such as chironomid larvae, ostracods and copepods through the gill rakers before expelling the spent sand. A proportionally larger head, if it reflects stronger jaw musculature rather than pattern alone, could plausibly correspond to processing coarser sediment or larger prey items than more slender-headed congeners, but this is inference from morphology rather than a documented feeding account for this specific population.
Mating
No study of courtship or territoriality has been published for this form. Lethrinops in general are non-territorial outside the breeding season, with males establishing a display site on open sand once in colour, and no lasting pair bond; the mating system is lek-like, with females moving between coloured males scattered across the sand to choose where to spawn. Behavioural specifics for this population, including whether males build a bower or simply display in place, have not been documented.
Breeding
As in every member of its genus, this form is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: spawning occurs on open sand at or near a male's display site, and the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after laying, incubating them there through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no male or biparental care beyond fertilisation. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented for this specific population.
In the aquarium
Lethrinops sp. "Big Head" is not established in the aquarium hobby and no husbandry record exists for it specifically. A keeper who obtained it should follow genus-typical Lethrinops practice: a soft sand substrate at least 2 in deep to support natural sifting behaviour, a tank of at least 47 in to allow a trio or small harem group, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, moderately hard to hard. Because the form is undescribed and known from a single broad locality, keepers who acquire it should record and preserve the collection site rather than mixing stock from elsewhere in the Arm.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Lethrinops sp. "Big Head", and none can until it receives a formal description. Sand-dwelling Lethrinops of the South East Arm face pressure from inshore trawling and seine-net fisheries, which take open-water and sand-associated haplochromines as bycatch far more heavily than rock-dwelling mbuna, and from sedimentation linked to catchment land use around the southern lake. No population-specific data exist to characterise this form's status beyond "unassessed".
