Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Ctenopharynx nitidus was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935, in her foundational synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa, within the genus Ctenopharynx that she erected in the same work. The genus name combines the Greek "kteis" (comb) with "pharynx" (throat), referring to the comb-like arrangement of the pharyngeal teeth — a structure well suited to processing molluscs and other hard-bodied invertebrates taken from soft substrate. The species epithet "nitidus" is Latin for shining or bright, likely describing a glossy or iridescent sheen to the fish's coloration. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the species' currently accepted valid name and any subsequent taxonomic revision.

Morphology

Ctenopharynx nitidus has the moderately elongate, less laterally compressed body typical of sand-dwelling Malawi haplochromines, built for cruising over open substrate rather than manoeuvring among rocks. Adults are estimated at roughly 4.5–5 in, a mid-sized fish for the lake's sand-associated cichlid fauna. As the species name suggests, its coloration carries a bright or glossy quality rather than the bold vertical barring typical of mbuna, though the precise pattern is not confidently documented here. Mating

As in other Lake Malawi haplochromines, Ctenopharynx nitidus is understood to be polygynous with no lasting pair bond. Many sand-dwelling haplochromines in the lake construct or maintain a spawning site on the open substrate — anything from a simple cleared patch to an elaborate sand bower, depending on the species — around which a territorial male displays to attract females. A tank of at least 47–59 in with a substantial open-sand footprint suits the species well, since it is adapted to foraging over soft substrate rather than navigating dense rockwork; fine sand is preferable to coarse gravel, which can interfere with natural sifting behaviour. Water should follow the lake's chemistry — warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly pH 7.7 to 8.6. It is generally considered less overtly aggressive than territorial mbuna, and can be combined with other calm, similarly sized Malawi sand-dwellers, though as with any Malawi cichlid, a mixed-sex group and generous space help spread any aggression that does arise.

Conservation

No confirmed IUCN Red List status for Ctenopharynx nitidus is available here, so none is stated.
