Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Zebra" has no describing author and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; it is an informal trade name, not a scientific one. Lethrinops was erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 for a genus of sand-sifting Lake Malawi cichlids typified by Chromis lethrinus Günther, 1894, and today comprises roughly two dozen described species plus many undescribed local forms. Because the word "zebra" is also the standing common name for Maylandia zebra and its many mbuna-complex relatives, care is needed not to conflate the two: this form is a Lethrinops, in an entirely different feeding guild and ecological niche from any rock-dwelling zebra-type mbuna, despite sharing a superficially similar descriptive name. Within Lethrinops, some species do show vertically barred breeding patterns, which is presumably the basis for this trade name, but no formal account of the pattern in this specific form has been published, and no described species is identified as its closest formal relative in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
"Zebra" is expected to share the standard Lethrinops body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with a pointed head and protrusible jaws for sand-sifting — a build distinct from the deeper-bodied, algae-grazing mbuna that also carry "zebra" in their common names. As the trade name implies, breeding males are presumed to show some form of vertical barring, a pattern documented in breeding dress for a handful of other Lethrinops species, but no formal description of the bars, their number, or their background colour exists for this form. Genus-typical maximum size for medium Lethrinops runs to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length; no confirmed figure exists specifically for this form. Females and non-breeding males are assumed silvery and largely unmarked.
Habitat
Nkhata Bay is a deep, steep-sided bay on Lake Malawi's northern west shore, well known for rocky mbuna habitat along its shoreline but also holding sand and mixed-substrate ground further from the rocks, where sand-sifting haplochromines such as Lethrinops are found. "Zebra" was recorded from the bay; specific depth data are not available, but genus-typical Lethrinops on comparable ground occupy roughly 26–82 ft. Sand-dwelling Lethrinops are known to bury themselves in the sand at night, a predator-avoidance behaviour documented across several species in the genus and likely shared by most undescribed forms occupying similar open-sand habitat. Lake Malawi's water at these depths is typically clear and well oxygenated, a legacy of the lake's great depth and permanent thermal stratification below roughly 656 ft.
Feeding
Feeding is presumed to follow the standard Lethrinops sand-sifting mode: mouthfuls of substrate worked in the buccal cavity, sand expelled through the gills, and small invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and ostracods retained — a diet and feeding mechanism entirely different from the algae-scraping habit of the unrelated mbuna that share the "zebra" name. No feeding data specific to this form have been published. The protrusible-jaw sifting mechanism at the core of Lethrinops feeding was among the trophic adaptations catalogued by Geoffrey Fryer and Trevor Iles in their influential 1972 ecomorphological survey of the Malawi haplochromine radiation, which grouped genera like Lethrinops as functionally convergent sand-sifters distinct from the biting and scraping guilds found on rock. Feeding activity is concentrated during daylight hours, when the fish forage over open bottom, typically alone or in loose, shifting groups.
Mating
Breeding behaviour has not been directly documented for this form. Lethrinops generally breed on a lek system, with territorial males on open sand displaying to visiting females before spawning; there is no indication this form departs from that pattern. As in nearly all Malawi haplochromine mouthbrooders, courting males are presumed to display the egg-spot markings on the anal fin characteristic of the group — orange or yellow ocelli that mimic eggs and prompt the female to repeatedly attempt to collect them into her mouth, a behaviour that brings her into contact with sperm and fertilises the clutch she is already carrying. Lek sites for sand-dwelling haplochromines are typically loose, temporary aggregations of male territories rather than fixed, permanent arenas, and their exact location can shift from season to season as sand conditions change.
Breeding
Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding, as in all Lethrinops: the female carries fertilised eggs and developing fry in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, unassisted by the male, before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; genus-typical broods run to a few dozen eggs. Incubation in Malawi's warm, stable water typically runs close to three weeks; the female generally stops or greatly reduces feeding for the duration, and fry are released at a size large enough to forage and take shelter independently almost immediately. Aquarium keepers working with related Lethrinops report that a female nearing release of fry becomes noticeably reclusive, spending more time hidden and less time foraging in the open, a pattern presumed to hold for this form as well.
In the aquarium
This is a scarce, specialist-import form, and buyers should double-check with any seller that they are receiving the Lethrinops "Zebra" and not an unrelated fish traded under a similar "zebra" label. Standard Lethrinops husbandry applies: a long tank with a deep, fine sand substrate, hard alkaline water reflecting Lake Malawi chemistry, and calmer tankmates, since Lethrinops are readily outcompeted for food by more aggressive mbuna. A single male with several females, matching its lek-breeding biology, generally produces the best results. A tank of at least 47–59 in in length suits the genus's need for open swimming and foraging space, and a sinking, protein-rich diet supplemented with some vegetable matter approximates its natural sand-sifting intake reasonably well.
Conservation
As an undescribed form, "Zebra" has not been assessed by the IUCN and has no conservation status. Nkhata Bay is a long-established collection point for the aquarium trade, and its sand and rock habitats face the same general pressures — inshore fishing and shoreline development — seen elsewhere on the lake, but no population data specific to this form are available. More broadly, undescribed, locality-restricted forms like this one sit outside any formal conservation framework by definition — IUCN assessment requires a validated taxonomic name — even though a population confined to a single reef or bay can in principle be as vulnerable to local disturbance as many formally listed species.
