Lugubria phaiospilus is a slender, small-scaled pike cichlid endemic to the rapids and clearwater stretches of the middle and upper Rio Xingu in Pará, Brazil. Described by Sven Kullander in 1991 alongside its neighbour Crenicichla percna, it is recognized by a pointed snout and a row of four or five dark blotches down each flank — the dusky spots that give it its name. A predator of the fast, sunlit, rock-and-sand habitats of the Brazilian Shield, it belongs to one of the most distinctive and threatened endemic fish faunas in the Amazon, the river system now reshaped by the Belo Monte hydroelectric complex.

Taxonomy & naming

Lugubria phaiospilus was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Sven O. Kullander in 1991, in the same paper that named Crenicichla percna, both treated as 'two new species of pike cichlids from the Rio Xingu, Brazil' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 1(4): 351–360). The holotype, MZUSP 35997, was collected in the Rio Fresco — a tributary of the middle Rio Xingu drainage — at Aldeia Gorotire, município de São Félix do Xingu, Pará State; paratypes are held at IRSNB (Brussels) and NRM (Stockholm). The species had been illustrated, though not yet named, by Frank Warzel in volume 2 of Ad Konings' Cichlids Yearbook, where a line drawing accompanied his notes on the river's pike cichlids. Crenicichla is the most species-rich cichlid genus, with well over eighty valid species, and its internal classification has long been organized into informal 'species groups.' Lugubria phaiospilus is a comparatively large, small-scaled, pointed-snouted species and does not belong to the dwarf Crenicichla wallacii group; it has historically been considered one of a small set of pike cichlids endemic to the Xingu, together with Crenicichla percna and Crenicichla rosemariae Kullander, 1997. In 2023 Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández published an integrative phylogenetic revision of the pike cichlids (subtribe Crenicichlina) that split the old, sprawling Crenicichla into several genera; in that scheme this fish is reassigned as Lugubria phaiospilus, the combination now followed by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. That molecular realignment cuts across an older, informal split Kullander himself had drawn on external grounds in 1991, which grouped the robust, blunt-snouted pikes — C. lugubris, C. lenticulata, C. marmorata, C. johanna, C. strigata and C. cincta — apart from a slender, pointed-snout set that included C. multispinosa, C. ternetzi, C. tigrina, C. percna, L. phaiospilus and C. acutirostris. Phaiospilus fell in that pointed-snout set on the older morphological reading, yet the molecular data ultimately placed it in Lugubria alongside several of the blunt-snouted species — a reminder that snout shape, though a convenient field character, does not always track evolutionary relationship. That generic revision is recent and not yet universally adopted in the hobby or older literature, so this atlas retains the long-familiar name Lugubria phaiospilus while noting the proposed move to Lugubria.

Morphology

This is a medium-large pike cichlid, reaching a known maximum of about 9.5 in (9.5 in) standard length — a typical Crenicichla silhouette of an elongate, cylindrical, laterally compressed body with the dorsal and anal fins set far back and a rounded caudal fin, built for an ambush lunge from cover. The snout is distinctly pointed and the scales are small (a small-scaled species, in Kullander's terms). The defining colour feature in adults is a series of four or five dark blotches arranged along the midline of each flank; unusually for the genus it also lacks the light-bordered spot most pike cichlids carry at the base of the caudal peduncle, and there is no caudal-fin ocellus, so the unpaired fins are clear. The head is shallow and pointed, carried with the eyes set relatively high — a silhouette it shares with its Xingu neighbour C. sp. 'Xingu II.' Juveniles look different: they carry a dark lateral band and small dark spots scattered over the top of the head, a pattern that is gradually lost as the fish passes roughly 2.5 in SL, the flank band breaking up into the adult row of blotches. The specific epithet — from Greek phaios, dusky or grey, and spilos, a spot — refers directly to these dull, dusky markings. Like other pike cichlids it shows modest sexual dimorphism: in mature Crenicichla, females tend to develop a more rounded, fuller belly and frequently a contrasting patch or flush on the dorsal fin in breeding condition, while males grow somewhat larger; sex-linked colour and finnage detail for this particular species are poorly documented in the literature.

Habitat

Lugubria phaiospilus is endemic to the Rio Xingu drainage of the Amazon basin in Pará State, Brazil, recorded from the middle and upper river and tributaries such as the Rio Fresco, including localities at Cachoeira von Martius and Gorotire. The Xingu is a Brazilian-Shield clearwater river: wide, shallow and sun-penetrated, running fast over extensive bedrock of granite and gneiss broken into rapids and waterfalls, with sandy beaches, clearwater pools and root-tangled margins exposed in the dry season. Sunlight reaching the bottom drives a rich growth of algae and the micro-invertebrate community it supports, while the turbulent rapids keep the water highly oxygenated — the web of conditions that has made the Xingu a cradle of rheophilic (current-loving) endemics. Within this setting pike cichlids occupy the rocky and sandy zones in and around the rapids, hunting from cover. In situ and aquarium-relevant chemistry is warm, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral: FishBase cites a pH from about 6.5 upward, very low hardness (dH from about 1), and a temperature window of roughly 81–86 °F, consistent with the warm clearwater of the middle Xingu. Specific depth measurements for the species are not published; in keeping with the shallow, sunlit rapids and beaches it inhabits, it is best regarded as a fish of the shallow band (roughly the upper 0–10 ft), where light, oxygen and food are concentrated.

Feeding

Like all pike cichlids, Lugubria phaiospilus is a carnivore built around the ambush capture of mobile prey. The elongate body, large terminal mouth and rearward-set fins are the hallmarks of a lie-in-wait predator that holds station among rocks or root tangles and accelerates onto passing fish, shrimp and large aquatic invertebrates. FishBase places the species at a high estimated trophic level (around 3.8), the value expected of a piscivore-leaning predator, though that figure is modelled from relatives rather than measured from gut contents. In the Xingu's rapids community, mid-sized Crenicichla function as significant predators on smaller fishes and crustaceans, while the river's many tiny darter-like Teleocichla and dwarf pike cichlids exploit the micro-invertebrate film on the rocks; phaiospilus, at up to 9.5 in, sits among the larger pike predators of these habitats rather than the micro-grazers. No detailed wild-diet study specific to this species has been published, so its menu is inferred from its morphology, its trophic placement and the feeding ecology of congeners.

Mating

Pike cichlids form monogamous pairs that share parental duties, and pair formation is preceded by courtship and the establishment of a defended territory centred on a spawning site. Reproductive behaviour specific to Lugubria phaiospilus has not been documented in the wild or formally reported in aquaria, so its mating system is described from the consistent pattern across the genus. In Crenicichla generally, a ripe female solicits a male and the two settle on and clean a sheltered surface — typically the wall or ceiling of a rock crevice or cave — with the female often the more conspicuously coloured partner, developing a reddened or contrastingly marked belly and dorsal fin that signals readiness. Once a bond forms, both fish defend the immediate area around the chosen cave against intruders. As with most pike cichlids, intraspecific aggression can be intense, and an incompatible or unready pairing may turn violent, a behaviour that conditions how these fish are managed in captivity.

Breeding

Lugubria phaiospilus has not, on the available record, been bred and documented in aquaria, and its reproduction in the wild has not been studied; what follows is the genus-typical pattern, flagged as such. Pike cichlids are biparental substrate and cave spawners: the adhesive eggs are laid on a concealed hard surface, most often inside a rock crevice or cave, and both parents tend the brood — the female generally guarding and fanning the eggs and wrigglers while the male patrols and defends the territory. Clutch sizes in mid-sized Crenicichla typically run from roughly one hundred to several hundred eggs (a genus-typical figure cited here in the absence of data specific to phaiospilus, not a measured count for this species). The larvae are guarded as a free-swimming school and shepherded by the parents for an extended period; in the wild, large Xingu pike cichlids are noted for guarding their young until they are several centimetres long. In the rapids environment, the seasonal flood pulse — the dramatic wet-season rise and fall of the river — is the natural cue that sets the breeding calendar for much of the Xingu's fauna.

In the aquarium

Lugubria phaiospilus is an uncommon, specialist's fish rather than a staple of the trade, and reliable first-hand keeping accounts are scarce; what guidance exists is extrapolated from keeping other middle-Xingu pike cichlids. It is not a beginner's species. At up to about 9.5 in and with the territorial drive typical of the genus, it needs a large tank — a footprint on the order of 59 in or more, giving a single specimen or a well-matched pair room to hold territory and giving subordinate fish room to escape. The aquarium should recreate the river it comes from: a substrate of sand and smooth water-worn pebbles, a structure of rounded rocks and driftwood arranged into caves and crevices for cover and potential spawning sites, brisk filtration and strong, oxygenating water movement to echo the rapids, and scrupulously clean water. Target conditions are warm, soft and slightly acidic to near-neutral: roughly 79–86 °F, pH around 6.0–7.5, and low hardness, with large regular water changes to keep nitrogenous waste minimal. Feeding is straightforward for a predator — meaty foods such as earthworms, prawn, mussel, and suitably sized live or frozen items, weaning adaptable specimens onto quality sinking pellets. The central husbandry caution is aggression: pike cichlids are predatory toward anything small enough to be swallowed and can be fiercely intolerant of conspecifics and similar-shaped rivals, so tankmates should be robust, dissimilar, too large to eat, and given space to stay out of the way. The most common mistakes are housing it too small, pairing fish that have not chosen each other, and underestimating both its predatory appetite and its need for clean, well-oxygenated water.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria phaiospilus as Least Concern (assessed 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade, ICMBio; assessment published 2022). It is not listed by CITES. That said, the species is a narrow-range Xingu endemic, and the river's fauna is among the most scrutinized and most pressured in the Amazon. The Belo Monte hydroelectric complex diverts the main course of the Xingu around the Volta Grande ('Big Bend'), drastically reducing flow through that great series of rapids while flooding other reaches, and it dampens the seasonal flood pulse that cues breeding for much of the basin's wildlife — changes that have raised serious concern for the river's many rheophilic, rapids-dependent endemics. The most acute, dam-zone impacts fall on the lower river around the Volta Grande; phaiospilus, whose recorded range lies chiefly in the middle and upper Xingu above that reach, is less directly exposed than fishes confined to the Big Bend, which is consistent with its Least Concern status. Even so, it shares the basin-wide pressures of deforestation, gold mining and its mercury, expanding agriculture and altered hydrology that hang over the whole Xingu system, and its long-term security should be read against that backdrop rather than taken for granted.
