Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1903 as Lugubria multispinosa, on material catalogued simply from "Guyane française." Pellegrin's account appeared twice in close succession — in the Bulletin du Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in 1903 and, with a plate, in the Mémoires journal the following year — a near-simultaneous double publication that has occasionally muddled the date. The type series rests in the Paris museum (MNHN); the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg selected a lectotype (MNHN A-9542) in 1986 and, in the same review of the French-Guianan pike cichlids, restricted the vague original type locality to the Maroni River, south of Grand Creek. Ploeg later folded the species into his comprehensive 1991 revision of Crenicichla, placing it with the large assemblage of spangled pikes he and Sven Kullander recognized as the Crenicichla saxatilis species group. Within that group multispinosa is the closest relative of Crenicichla ternetzi, the two sharing an unusually high dorsal-spine count. The most consequential recent change is generic: the integrative phylogenetic revision by Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández (2023) split the old, sprawling genus Crenicichla into several lineages and transferred this species — along with the large lugubris- and johanna-type pikes — to a newly erected genus, Lugubria, so that FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes now list it as Lugubria multispinosa (Pellegrin, 1903). That reclassification is well supported but not yet universally adopted; this atlas retains the long-familiar Crenicichla heading while noting the Lugubria placement.
Morphology
Lugubria multispinosa has the elongate, cylindrical, pike-like body shared by all of its genus: a long head, a deeply cleft mouth set with bands of small recurved teeth, and dorsal and anal fins running far back along the body to a rounded tail. Ploeg's series ranged from about 4–9 in in standard length (5–10.5 in total), making this a medium-large pike; FishBase cites a maximum of 9 in SL. The defining feature is meristic rather than chromatic: the dorsal fin carries 23 to 25 spines, against the 15 to 20 of typical saxatilis-group members such as Crenicichla saxatilis itself — the very excess that earned the fish its name. Soft dorsal rays number 13 to 15 and soft anal rays 9 or 10, over a flank clad in many small scales (about 98 to 110 scale rows below the lateral lines). In coloration it is a classic "spangled" pike: the body is scattered with numerous small silvery-white spots, there is a humeral (shoulder) blotch behind the gill cover, and — importantly for identification — a dark spot at the base of the caudal fin. It is most readily confused with its sympatric relative Crenicichla ternetzi, but that species lacks the white flank spots and the caudal spot, and its females show pale bands in the tail that multispinosa females do not. Sexual dimorphism follows the saxatilis-group pattern: males grow larger and more heavily spangled, while ripe females tend to be smaller, develop a flushed belly, and may carry dark ocelli in the dorsal fin (variable, from none to a full row).
Habitat
The species is a Guiana Shield endemic, restricted to the Maroni (Marowijne) and Mana river basins that drain the border country of Suriname and French Guiana toward the Atlantic. These are clear-to-tannin-stained coastal rivers of the eastern Guianas, and within them multispinosa is a fish of flowing, sunlit water rather than still backwaters. FishBase, drawing on the field notes compiled in Kullander and Nijssen's monograph on the Surinam cichlids, records that it occupies the same biotope as Crenicichla ternetzi but partitions it differently: where ternetzi shelters in the rocky zones of rapids, sheltering against the back-currents, multispinosa stays out in the shallow water under bright sunlight. Reported water temperatures for the species sit around 79–82 °F, typical of these warm lowland-to-piedmont rivers. The Maroni and Mana run soft and acidic to near-neutral over rock and sand, the chemistry of rainforest blackwater and clearwater rather than mineral-rich whitewater; precise in-situ pH and conductivity for this particular species are not well published, but the regional norm is soft water with pH in the roughly 5.5–7.0 band. Like other rapids-associated pikes it is a shallow-water fish, occurring from the surface down through the well-lit shoals rather than in deep channels.
Feeding
Like every pike cichlid, Lugubria multispinosa is an ambush predator built around its elongate body and large, toothed mouth. The genus as a whole is piscivorous and carnivorous: these fish lie quietly among rock, root, or leaf litter and lunge at passing prey, taking small fishes, shrimps and other crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and whatever invertebrates the substrate offers. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.8 for this species, squarely in the predatory range. No detailed gut-content study specific to multispinosa has been published, but its sunlit-shallows habit places it among the small fishes, shrimps and drifting invertebrates of the rapids margins, where shrimp are abundant throughout Guianan rivers and form a staple of the spangled pikes generally. In its community it functions as a mid-sized resident predator of the shoal and rapid-edge, hunting by stealth rather than pursuit.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Lugubria multispinosa has not been documented in detail in the wild or, as far as the published record shows, in aquaria, but it almost certainly follows the well-known template of the saxatilis-group pikes. These fish form monogamous, biparental pairs that are built only with difficulty: pike cichlids are intensely intolerant of unpaired conspecifics, and the pair-bonding process is the most aggressive and dangerous phase of their social life. A maturing male and female recognize one another by their developed sexual differences — the larger, more strongly spangled male and the smaller female with her flushed belly and pale dorsal-fin line — and a compatible pair then claims and defends a territory centred on a chosen spawning cave or crevice. As with related pikes, pair bonds can be unstable, and aggression that is suppressed during courtship can re-erupt against a mate once the spawning is over.
Breeding
No spawning account specific to Lugubria multispinosa appears in the literature, so its breeding biology is inferred from the genus and from its species group, which is among the most reliably bred of all pikes. All Crenicichla are biparental cave or crevice spawners: the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — a rock undercut, a hollow in driftwood, or, in tanks, a cave or length of pipe — and guards and fans them while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Saxatilis-group females typically lay on the order of 300 to 400 eggs (a genus-typical figure, undocumented for this species specifically), the larvae hatch within a few days and become free-swimming after roughly a week, and the small fry can take newly hatched brine shrimp immediately. The parents continue to guard the mobile fry, which retreat to cover at any disturbance. As in related pikes, the bond can deteriorate a month or two after spawning, with the male turning on the female, so the wild norm of a large, structured territory matters as much for the parents' safety as for the brood's.
In the aquarium
Lugubria multispinosa is rarely seen in the hobby — it is a localized Guianan endemic, not a commonly exported pike — so dedicated keeping accounts are scarce, and the husbandry below is extrapolated from the closely related and far better-known saxatilis-group pikes, which experienced keepers regard as among the hardiest and easiest pike cichlids to maintain and spawn.
This is a medium-large, actively predatory fish that reaches well over 8 in, and it needs space accordingly: a tank of at least 47–59 in (roughly four to five feet) in length is a sensible minimum for a pair, and longer is better. The single most important reason for the large footprint is intraspecific aggression. Pike cichlids are murderous toward unpaired conspecifics during pair formation, and a tank under about four feet routinely results in deaths among unpaired fish; even an established pair needs room for the female to escape the larger male, especially after a spawn. The standard approach is to raise a group of six or so juveniles together, providing abundant cover — lengths of PVC pipe are the classic, if unlovely, refuge — and let a pair form, removing the losers as aggression dictates.
Water should reflect the warm, soft, well-oxygenated rivers of the Guiana Shield: temperature around 79–82 °F, pH on the acidic-to-neutral side (roughly 5.5–7.0 is ideal, though saxatilis-group pikes are notably tolerant and breed even in harder, more alkaline tap water), with brisk filtration and good current to mimic the rapids-edge biotope this species favours. A sand or fine-gravel base, scattered rock and driftwood arranged to create caves and broken sightlines, and at least one defensible cave per fish suit it well. These are not plant-wreckers in the manner of large eartheaters, but robust or attached plants fare best.
Feeding is straightforward once the fish settle: a carnivore's diet of frozen and live foods — shrimp, earthworms, insect larvae, and chopped fish or mussel — with most specimens eventually accepting quality sinking pellets. Live fish ("feeders") are best avoided as a disease vector; they are not necessary for conditioning. The chief husbandry pitfalls are all social rather than chemical: too small a tank, too few hiding places, and failing to manage the post-spawning surge of male aggression toward the female. Tankmates should be robust, similarly sized fish that are not so small as to be eaten nor so slow as to be bullied; once a pair spawns, expect them to clear the territory of all comers.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria multispinosa as Least Concern (assessed 25 December 2020 by D.C. Taphorn and D. Rodríguez-Olarte, published 2022), with a population trend listed as stable. The assessment notes no major species-specific threats across its Maroni–Mana range and no CITES listing. As a habitat-tied endemic of just two river basins, however, it is intrinsically more exposed than the widespread Amazonian pikes: its entire world range lies within the eastern Guianas, where the principal pressures on freshwater fishes are gold mining and the mercury and sediment loads it releases, deforestation, and localized water-quality degradation. None of these is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but a narrow, single-region distribution means its long-term security depends on the continued health of the Maroni and Mana drainages rather than on the buffering that a vast range would provide.
