The genus includes some of the most popular aquarium sand-dwellers, such as the red empress, alongside a larger number of plainer, less commercially known species. The specific epithet triaenodon combines the Greek triaina (trident) and odous (tooth), referring to the three-cusped, trident-shaped outer teeth found in many haplochromines of this group — a feature used alongside body proportions and colour pattern to distinguish species within the genus.
