Rhamphochromis sp. "Longiceps Yellowbelly" is not a formally described species and has no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Rhamphochromis, the pike-like open-water predatory genus erected by C. Tate Regan in 1922 around the type species Rhamphochromis longiceps (Günther, 1864), one of the first cichlids ever described from Lake Malawi. The trade name pairs that type species' epithet with a distinguishing colour character, yellowbelly, and it is used in field references such as malawi.si to flag a Senga Bay population that resembles R. longiceps closely enough to be grouped near it informally, while carrying a yellow-tinted venter that the described species is not documented as showing. Distinguishing Rhamphochromis species and forms from one another in the field is a well-known difficulty across the genus, and this population has not been formally assessed against R. longiceps or matched with confidence to any other described species. Until a taxonomic revision addresses it, no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
This form follows the Rhamphochromis body plan shared with R. longiceps: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a pointed head, and the genus's diagnostic beak-like forward expansion of the premaxillae. R. longiceps itself is documented as one of the smaller-toothed, more moderately sized members of the genus, reaching around 11 in total length, with closely packed teeth and, in fresh well-conditioned fish, a greenish metallic sheen on the back. The character separating this Senga Bay population in the field is a yellow tint to the belly, a colour detail not documented in R. longiceps proper. Beyond that distinguishing character, detailed colour and pattern have not been published for this form, and sexual dichromatism, though expected by analogy with the genus, has not been separately confirmed.
Habitat
Rhamphochromis sp. "Longiceps Yellowbelly" is recorded from Senga Bay, a well-known collecting locality on the lake's central-western shore. R. longiceps, the species this form is informally grouped near, occupies reedy bays and lagoons, open sandy beaches, and shelf and reef zones, with brooding females and juveniles concentrated inshore in surface water — a habitat pattern broadly consistent with a Senga Bay record. Depth records for R. longiceps extend to roughly 486 ft, reflecting the genus's willingness to work the water column, though where this specific yellow-bellied form sits within that range is not separately documented. The surrounding water carries Lake Malawi's typical hard, alkaline chemistry.
Feeding
As with R. longiceps and Rhamphochromis generally, this form is presumed to feed on open-water prey, shifting with size: small individuals take crustacean zooplankton, larger fish move increasingly onto the larvae and juveniles of usipa (Engraulicypris sardella), the lake's keystone pelagic forage fish, and juvenile utaka. No feeding study specific to this Senga Bay population has been published; this account follows the documented pattern for R. longiceps and the genus rather than direct observation of the form itself.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this form specifically. By analogy with R. longiceps and the wider genus, it is presumed polygynandrous, without a lasting pair bond, with territorial males displaying to females in open or inshore water. Brooding females and juveniles of R. longiceps concentrate inshore in surface water at localities such as reedy bays and sandy beaches, a pattern this Senga Bay form, sharing much of R. longiceps's habitat, plausibly follows, though this remains inference rather than direct observation.
Breeding
Rhamphochromis sp. "Longiceps Yellowbelly" is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with R. longiceps and the genus as a whole. Following spawning, the female is presumed to take the fertilised eggs into her mouth and brood them alone, with documented brooding periods across better-known Rhamphochromis (per Genner et al. 2007, cited in the fisheries literature) running roughly three to four weeks before free-swimming fry are released. There is no defined spawning season reported for the genus, and relatively fast stock turnover is part of why Rhamphochromis has drawn some aquaculture interest. No clutch counts or fry-size data specific to this yellow-bellied Senga Bay population have been published; this account follows genus-level inference rather than direct observation of the form's breeding biology.
In the aquarium
This form is not established in the aquarium hobby with any consistent identity of its own. Rhamphochromis as a genus is a specialist, advanced-keeper fish even at the species level — fast, predatory, and needing considerably more length than a typical Malawi cichlid tank provides, plus careful stocking given the genus's well-documented aggression toward its own kind and its willingness to eat anything that fits in its mouth. Were this Senga Bay population to reach hobbyists, it would most plausibly do so labelled loosely as R. longiceps or as unidentified Rhamphochromis sp., since the yellow-belly character that separates it in field references is a subtle distinction unlikely to be preserved through the trade. No form-specific husbandry has been documented.
Conservation
Rhamphochromis sp. "Longiceps Yellowbelly" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form it carries no Red List category or assessment. R. longiceps itself, the species this form is grouped near, is assessed Vulnerable (VU A2d) under the 2018 Red List, driven largely by fishing pressure — a relevant data point for the genus generally, though it cannot be extended as a formal status for this unnamed population. As a Senga Bay, inshore-associated form it is exposed to the same broad pressures affecting Lake Malawi's shallower littoral fisheries and habitats, alongside the basin-wide stresses of warming and reduced productivity documented for the lake as a whole.
