Taxonomy & naming
Rhamphochromis sp. "Nkhwazi" has never been formally described and carries no authority, publication date, or entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus itself, erected by C. Tate Regan in 1922 with Rhamphochromis longiceps as type species, is notoriously difficult to resolve into clean species boundaries: the fish are streamlined, silvery, and morphologically convergent, so field workers rely on subtle differences in jaw shape, tooth pattern, and body proportion rather than colour to separate forms, and several populations remain informally recognised rather than named. "Nkhwazi" is one such field-recognised form, its trade name borrowed from the Chichewa name for the African fish eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) — a naming choice in the hobby and field literature, not a claim of relationship to any described species. No confidently identified closest relative has been established for it.
Morphology
This form carries the standard Rhamphochromis build: an elongate, laterally compressed, torpedo-shaped body, a forked caudal fin, and the genus's diagnostic beak-like forward extension of the premaxillae, set with prominent, widely spaced canine-like teeth. No morphometric study distinguishes "Nkhwazi" from its congeners beyond the field observations that led to its recognition as a separate form, and specific length data have not been published; a mid-sized estimate in the low-to-mid 20s of centimetres TL, drawn from similarly built Rhamphochromis, is a reasonable working figure rather than a confirmed one. Colour has not been documented with confidence for this population; the genus-typical pattern of a greenish-to-bluish metallic sheen on fresh males, with females plainer and more silvery, is presumed but not directly observed here.
Habitat
The two documented localities, Kande Island on the north-central Malawian shore and Makanjila Rocks toward the lake's southern end, are separated by well over 93 mi of open water — a distribution pattern typical of Rhamphochromis, which ranges the shelf and open lake rather than defending a fixed reef. Depth use spans from nearshore water down to tens of metres, tracking the shoals of small fish the genus hunts. The lake's water chemistry throughout this range is uniformly warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Rhamphochromis as a genus is not confined to the true open-water column either: several species work the shelf and near-beach shallows as well as deeper water, so a wide-ranging form recorded at both Kande Island and Makanjila Rocks should not be assumed a strict deep-pelagic specialist without direct observation.
Feeding
Rhamphochromis is Lake Malawi's dedicated open-water fish-eater, and this form is presumed to share that ecology. The core prey is usipa (Engraulicypris sardella), the lake's abundant shoaling cyprinid, along with juvenile utaka and other small haplochromines, with zooplankton contributing more to the diet of smaller individuals. No feeding study specific to "Nkhwazi" exists, so this account rests on genus-wide observation rather than direct study of the form. Rhamphochromis does not hold fixed rocky territories the way mbuna do; the genus is understood as polygynandrous, with loosely aggregating fish and no defined breeding season, spawning opportunistically wherever prey and conditions align. Aggression toward other Rhamphochromis, including conspecific males, is well documented in captivity. No behaviour specific to "Nkhwazi" has been recorded, and this account follows the genus pattern by inference. Turner and colleagues, who have kept and studied Rhamphochromis directly, describe the genus as extremely aggressive toward conspecifics, a trait that likely carries over into competition among males for access to spawning opportunities in the wild, though no site-specific account exists for "Nkhwazi."
Breeding
Reproduction follows the universal Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern of maternal mouthbrooding: the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carries them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no parental role for the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form, and the figures used here are drawn from the genus rather than from direct study of "Nkhwazi." There is no defined breeding season reported for the genus as a whole, and combined with a relatively fast life cycle this has drawn some aquaculture interest in Rhamphochromis generally; none of this has been separately confirmed for "Nkhwazi." Rhamphochromis has drawn some interest as a candidate for small-scale aquaculture because of its relatively fast life cycle and lack of a fixed breeding season, an interest that concerns the genus broadly rather than "Nkhwazi" specifically.
In the aquarium
Rhamphochromis in general is a specialist keeping proposition, and undescribed field forms such as this one reach the trade only occasionally, usually sold under the bare genus name rather than as "Nkhwazi" specifically. Fish collected from deeper water require careful handling to avoid decompression injury, which limits how often they are exported at all. A tank for this fish should emphasise length above all — 71 in or more for an adult — with open swimming water rather than heavy rockwork, hard alkaline water, and temperatures on the cooler side of the Malawi range, around 75–81 °F. As an obligate piscivore it should be housed only with tankmates too large to be eaten. Hobbyist reports on related Rhamphochromis describe them as manageable alongside other large, robust fish once settled, though experiences vary and mixed reports exist on tankmate compatibility even within the genus.
Conservation
Rhamphochromis sp. "Nkhwazi" has not been assessed by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status — an absence that reflects its taxonomic status rather than any claim about its population. The genus as a whole shows a mixed picture: some described Rhamphochromis are assessed Vulnerable because of fishing pressure, since larger species are taken as food fish ("mcheni") in local fisheries, while others are Least Concern. "Nkhwazi," recorded across a wide span of open water, is best understood as exposed to these same lake-wide pressures rather than to any single localised threat. The 2018 IUCN assessment of Lake Malawi's fish fauna found roughly 9% of the 458 species assessed at high extinction risk, with overfishing identified as the leading driver — context relevant to any Lake Malawi endemic, undescribed or not.
