Taxonomy & naming
Oreochromis lidole was described by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1941, on material collected during a 1939 fishery survey of Lake Malawi (then Lake Nyasa), and it is one of four endemic chambo species she recognised in the lake — alongside Oreochromis karongae, Oreochromis squamipinnis and Oreochromis saka. All were originally placed in 'Tilapia' and later assigned to the maternal-mouthbrooding genus Oreochromis (for a time the chambo were also referenced under the subgenus or genus name Nyasalapia). The name lidole is a local Malawian name for the fish. Trewavas treated the chambo in detail in her 1983 tilapiine monograph, and the four species — closely related, sharing the open-water chambo niche but differing in breeding details and fine morphology — have been a recurring subject of fisheries and conservation study ever since. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Oreochromis lidole as valid. Historical reports of the species from Lake Chungruru and Lake Kingiri are now regarded as misidentifications; lidole is properly a Lake Malawi endemic.
Morphology
Oreochromis lidole is the largest of the chambo, reaching about 15 in in standard length — a substantial, deep-bodied, open-water tilapia. Like the other chambo it is a streamlined pelagic fish rather than a littoral grazer, built for life in the water column over the lake's offshore and deeper inshore zones. Its defining display feature is the breeding male's coloration: territorial males turn black, a dramatic nuptial dress shown off over the male's nest during the lek spawning that the chambo are famous for. Outside breeding, the fish are the silvery, countershaded form typical of pelagic plankton-feeders. Separating the four chambo species in the field has always demanded care — they overlap broadly in form — and the difficulty of telling lidole from its congeners is part of why its possible disappearance has been so hard to confirm or refute among the chambo still landed.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Lake Malawi, the vast, deep Rift lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Within it, lidole is an open-water (pelagic and demersal) fish, recorded over a depth range of roughly 98–328 ft — deeper than much of the rock-dwelling mbuna fauna for which the lake is famous, and reflecting the chambo's role as offshore, water-column tilapias. The chambo as a group occupy the lake's open and intermediate zones and its sandy and weedy shallows for breeding, schooling in the productive surface and sub-surface layers where phytoplankton is abundant. This open-water, deeper-zone habitat made the chambo the target of the lake's most important commercial and artisanal fisheries — and that same accessibility to nets is what made them so vulnerable to overexploitation.
Feeding
Oreochromis lidole is a phytoplankton feeder, placed at a low trophic level (about 2.3), and is the most specialised plankton-feeder of the chambo. With the fine gill-raker filtering apparatus of an open-water tilapia, it strains microscopic algae from the water column over the lake's productive offshore zone — the classic role of a pelagic primary consumer turning phytoplankton into harvestable fish flesh. This planktivorous specialisation tied lidole tightly to the open water and to the seasonal pulses of phytoplankton production, and distinguished it ecologically from more bottom-oriented tilapias. As with the chambo generally, this efficient conversion of microscopic plant production into large, palatable fish is precisely what made them so valuable — and, through overfishing, so imperilled.
Mating
The chambo are renowned lek breeders, and lidole is a maternal mouthbrooder of this kind. At spawning, territorial males gather in arenas (leks) on sandy bottoms and each constructs a 'sand-castle' nest — a built-up bower or crater of sand — which it defends and over which it displays in full black nuptial colour. Females visit the lek, choose among the displaying males, and spawn over the chosen male's nest, taking the fertilised eggs into the mouth immediately afterward. This combination of communal male display arenas, elaborate sand-nest building and female choice is one of the most spectacular breeding systems among tilapias, and it is shared, with species-specific variations, across the four chambo. The lek spawning concentrates breeding fish in predictable places and seasons — another trait that, however biologically elegant, left the chambo exposed to fishing pressure.
Breeding
Reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: after spawning over the male's sand nest, the female incubates the eggs and yolk-sac larvae in her buccal cavity, aerating and protecting them, and continues to shelter the free-swimming fry in her mouth when danger threatens until they are independent. As a large chambo, a well-grown female can carry a clutch of several hundred eggs, with the usual mouthbrooder trade-off of relatively few, well-protected young. Detailed reproductive data specific to lidole are limited and now largely historical, given the species' apparent disappearance. The collapse of the chambo fishery is in part a reproductive-failure story: heavy netting of breeding aggregations and of large females carrying broods undercut recruitment across the complex, and lidole — the largest and perhaps most heavily targeted — appears to have been the first of the four to vanish from the catch.
In the aquarium
Oreochromis lidole is not and has never been an aquarium fish — it is a large, open-water commercial food fish, and one now feared extinct. There is no husbandry tradition and no prospect of a hobbyist encountering it; indeed, no one has been able to point confidently to a living specimen in decades. Were any genuine lidole ever to be located, its handling would be a matter of emergency conservation, not display: a large pelagic chambo would need very large facilities, open water, sandy substrate for lek behaviour, planktonic or fine particulate feeding, and scrupulous genetic verification given how easily the chambo are confused and can hybridise. The honest position is that the most useful thing the aquarium and conservation community can do for lidole is support the management and recovery of the wider chambo fishery and rigorous surveys to determine whether the species survives at all — not contemplate keeping a fish that may no longer exist.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Oreochromis lidole as Critically Endangered (assessed 20 June 2018), and the assessment flags it as possibly extinct: the species is suspected to be globally extinct, with no confirmed records since the late 1990s/2000s and no fish identified as lidole among the chambo landed in recent decades — by some accounts none reliably recognised since the early 1990s. The cause is overwhelmingly overfishing. The chambo were the most valuable fishery in Lake Malawi, and decades of intense, poorly regulated commercial and artisanal netting — including heavy pressure on breeding aggregations and gravid females — drove a catastrophic collapse of the complex; three of the four chambo species are now Critically Endangered, and lidole, the largest, appears to have been lost first. Because the four chambo are hard to tell apart, confirming or refuting lidole's extinction requires targeted survey and genetic work. It carries no CITES listing. Whether or not a remnant survives, lidole stands as a stark warning of how even an abundant, commercially central fish can be fished into oblivion.
