Taxonomy & naming
Saxatilia nickeriensis was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg in 1987, in his review of the Surinamese species of Crenicichla published in Beaufortia (37(5): 73–98). It was one of three new pike cichlids — alongside Crenicichla coppenamensis and Crenicichla sipaliwini — that Ploeg recognized from Suriname in that work, separating them from the long-confused Crenicichla saxatilis largely on colour pattern and geography. The holotype (ZMA 107843, Zoological Museum Amsterdam) came from a right-bank tributary of the Nickerie River about 7 mi west-southwest of Stondansie Fall, Suriname; Ploeg's series ran to well over a hundred specimens drawn from the Nickerie and Corantijn drainages. The species sits squarely within the Crenicichla saxatilis species group, a complex of medium-sized, comparatively small-scaled pikes that includes Crenicichla saxatilis, Crenicichla albopunctata, Crenicichla alta, Crenicichla labrina, Crenicichla anthurus, Crenicichla lucius, Crenicichla proteus and Crenicichla semicincta. Ploeg noted that the morphometric and meristic differences among these forms are slight, and that Crenicichla coppenamensis, Saxatilia nickeriensis, Crenicichla sipaliwini and Crenicichla saxatilis are separated mostly by locality and pattern — a specimen of known provenance can usually be assigned, but isolated trade fish are easily muddled. In 2023, in a broad revision of the genus, Varella and colleagues partitioned the old Crenicichla and resurrected the genus Saxatilia for the saxatilis group, so the species now appears in some databases as Saxatilia nickeriensis (Ploeg, 1987); we retain the familiar Crenicichla heading here, as the Cichlid Atlas does for the rest of the group, and flag the change.
Morphology
This is a typically pike-shaped cichlid: an elongate, cylindrical body, a long head with a wide, terminal mouth, and the dorsal and anal fins set far back so that the fish resembles a freshwater pike or barracuda in miniature. FishBase gives a maximum of 7.5 in standard length; Ploeg's type series reached about 7.5 in SL, and the species shows pronounced size dimorphism, with mature males (over 7 in SL) markedly larger than females (under about 4 in SL). The diagnostic feature lies in the flank pattern. In preserved males a chain of irregularly shaped black blotches runs along the lateral line from behind the gill cover to an ocellated (light-ringed) spot at the caudal-fin base, with scattered pink dots over the upper flanks; the preorbital stripe through the eye is faint and the postorbital stripe is dark. Females lack the lateral chain of blotches, and their humeral (shoulder) spot is flattened along its upper edge. Among the saxatilis-group pikes of Suriname, this chain of blotches is unique to Saxatilia nickeriensis and the cleanest way to tell it apart from the otherwise similar Crenicichla saxatilis, Crenicichla coppenamensis and Crenicichla sipaliwini. As in other pikes, live colours are warmer and more iridescent than the alcohol pattern, and breeding females typically flush red or rose across the belly.
Habitat
Saxatilia nickeriensis is restricted to the Nickerie and Corantijn (Corantyne) river systems on the Guiana Shield. The Corantijn forms much of the border between Suriname and Guyana, so although Ploeg's material was Surinamese the species' range straddles both countries, and the IUCN treats it as occurring in Suriname and Guyana. Ploeg recorded it sympatrically with the larger Crenicichla lugubris over part of the Corantijn, the two readily separated by colour pattern. These are lowland Guiana Shield drainages — soft, warm, often tea-stained blackwaters and clearwaters draining rainforest and savanna, running from rocky rapids and falls (the type locality lies near Stondansie Fall) down through slow forest creeks and river margins. No in-situ chemistry was published for this species specifically, but waters of this region are characteristically soft and acidic to near-neutral (roughly pH 5.5–7.0) and warm (about 77–86 °F) year-round; saxatilis-group pikes are creek and river fishes that shelter among submerged wood, leaf litter, root tangles and rock in shallow water, typically within the upper few metres rather than the deep channel. The species is not a deep-water fish.
Feeding
Like all pike cichlids, Saxatilia nickeriensis is a carnivorous ambush predator, and FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. Its body plan — long, low-slung, with a large protrusible mouth and the unpaired fins shifted rearward for a quick lunge — is built for lying still among cover and seizing prey with a sudden forward dash. No gut-content study has been published for this particular species, but its close relatives in the saxatilis group are well documented as feeders on aquatic insects, crustaceans, shrimp and small fishes, taking whatever moving prey fits the gape; juveniles work through micro-invertebrates and insect larvae before graduating to fish as they grow. In its rivers and creeks it functions as a mid-level predator of the structured near-shore zone, hunting along the bottom and around submerged wood and rock rather than out in open water.
Mating
No field study of reproduction in Saxatilia nickeriensis has been published, so its mating behaviour is read from the well-studied biology of the saxatilis group, which it closely resembles. These pikes are not colonial or shoaling as adults; mature fish hold territories and form pairs for breeding. Courtship centres on a sheltered site — a crevice, undercut, or cavity among rock or wood — that the pair will defend together. Sexual dimorphism is strong and useful in pairing: males grow conspicuously larger, while ripe females are rounder and develop the reddened belly typical of group, signalling readiness. As in related pikes, pairs can be intolerant of one another outside of active breeding, and a mismatched or unready pair may turn aggressive, so pair formation in this group is best understood as a tense, size-structured affair that settles only once both fish are in spawning condition.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild or, as far as the published record shows, in aquaria for Saxatilia nickeriensis specifically; the account here is the genus-typical pattern shared across the saxatilis group. These pikes are biparental cave (substrate) spawners: the female attaches a clutch of adhesive eggs to the roof or wall of a sheltered cavity — a rock crevice, hollow log, or an upturned flowerpot in captivity — and the pair share the brood, the female tending and fanning the eggs while the male patrols and defends the surrounding territory. Saxatilis-group pikes of this size typically lay on the order of a few hundred eggs per spawning (a genus-typical figure of roughly 100–300 is reasonable for a fish this size; the exact clutch for this species is undocumented). Eggs hatch in a few days, the wrigglers are moved to pits and guarded, and once free-swimming the fry are shepherded as a tight school by both parents, who continue to defend them for some weeks. Parental care is biparental and prolonged by aquarium standards, ending as the young disperse.
In the aquarium
Saxatilia nickeriensis is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It has no established presence in the ornamental trade, is rarely if ever exported, and there is no body of keeping or breeding reports specific to it — most of what circulates under saxatilis-group names is the genuine Crenicichla saxatilis or its relatives. Anyone who did obtain it should keep it as the group dictates. This is a medium-large, predatory pike approaching 8 in, so a single fish or a settled pair needs a long tank — on the order of 59 in (around 100 US gal) or more — aquascaped with abundant cover: driftwood, rockwork, caves and undercuts that break sightlines and give a subordinate fish or an unready mate somewhere to retreat. Water should mirror its soft, warm Guiana home: temperature about 77–86 °F, pH on the acidic-to-neutral side (roughly 5.5–7.0), and low to moderate hardness, with strong filtration but gentle flow and scrupulous water changes, as pikes are sensitive to accumulated waste. Feed meaty foods — earthworms, shrimp, mussel, and over time fish-based frozen or prepared foods; live feeders are unnecessary and risk disease. Tankmates must be too large to be swallowed and robust enough not to be bullied: fast midwater dither fish and similarly sized, non-cichlid companions work better than small or sedentary fish, and conspecifics should only be combined in a large tank with the expectation of pair aggression. None of this is exotic for an experienced pike keeper, but it is not a community fish and not a beginner's animal.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Saxatilia nickeriensis as Least Concern (assessed 26 December 2020 by D.C. Taphorn and D. Rodríguez-Olarte; published 2022). The assessment notes its distribution across the Nickerie and Corantijn systems of Suriname and Guyana and finds no species-specific threats severe enough to warrant a higher category, while flagging that the species occurs in areas affected by gold mining. That last point is the real concern: the Guiana Shield is a major artisanal and industrial gold-mining region, and the associated mercury contamination, sediment loading and habitat disturbance of rivers and creeks are documented pressures on its freshwater fauna. The species carries no CITES listing. As a habitat generalist of a moderately large drainage it is less exposed than a narrow-range endemic, but its long-term outlook is tied to the health of the Corantijn and Nickerie basins, and any localized mining impacts would fall directly on the kind of forest-stream habitat it depends on.
