Psalidodon laticeps is a robust, small characid native to the river systems of southern Brazil and Uruguay, where it inhabits streams and rivers draining into the Laguna dos Patos system and the Río de la Plata basin. A member of the broadly distributed Astyanax scabripinnis complex, it was long conflated with relatives until a formal redescription in the 2010s established it as a distinct, valid species. In some molecular and morphological classifications it is placed in the genus Psalidodon, though its original description stands under Astyanax by Cope in 1894.

Taxonomy & naming

Psalidodon laticeps was originally described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1894 from material collected in the rivers of southern Brazil. For much of the following century the species was treated as a synonym or junior name within the sprawling Astyanax scabripinnis species complex — a group of small, silvery characids distributed across much of southern South America whose members share overlapping morphological characters and have proved notoriously difficult to delimit. A detailed redescription published in the journal Vertebrate Zoology (available through the Arpha Hub platform) formally revalidated P. laticeps as a distinct species, diagnosing it by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters including body depth (28.2–37.3% of standard length), a blunt snout, one to four maxillary teeth, 36–39 perforated lateral-line scales, and 18–24 branched anal-fin rays.

The International Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) recognises the valid name as Psalidodon laticeps (Cope, 1894), with taxonomic serial number 640491. Separately, several revisionary works — including those by Bührnheim and Carvalho (2009) and Mirande (2010) — have proposed placing the scabripinnis complex members in a resurrected genus, Psalidodon, in which case the species would be known as Psalidodon laticeps. FishBase currently lists the species under Psalidodon laticeps. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) remains the governing authority for the valid name. The parenthetical around Cope's name indicates the species was described in a different genus from where it is placed today.

Cytogenetic analysis of specimens from the Laguna dos Patos system has yielded a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 50, consistent with data for other members of the complex and providing a molecular marker that supplements morphological identification.

This fish was long listed as Astyanax laticeps; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Psalidodon, and the current combination Psalidodon laticeps is followed here.

Morphology

Psalidodon laticeps is a moderately deep-bodied characid; body depth ranges from 28.2 to 37.3% of standard length in examined specimens, giving it a somewhat stocky profile relative to more slender Astyanax species. The snout is described as blunt, and the dentition on the maxilla is reduced to one to four teeth. The lateral line carries 36–39 perforated scales. The anal fin is relatively long, with 18–24 branched rays — a character useful in separating it from some of its closest relatives within the scabripinnis complex.

Like most Astyanax, the species displays the typical characid body plan: a laterally compressed, fusiform shape, a small adipose fin between the dorsal and the caudal, and a generally silvery ground colouration. Sexual dimorphism in size and colouration is subtle, as is common in the complex; ripe females may appear slightly deeper-bodied before spawning. Detailed colour notes from the wild are sparse in the available literature, and captive specimens have rarely been the focus of published aquarium accounts.

Habitat

Psalidodon laticeps is distributed across southern Brazil and Uruguay, with records from the Laguna dos Patos drainage system and the broader Río de la Plata basin, including various streams and smaller rivers in the subtropical and temperate zone of southern South America. This places it at latitudes where seasonal temperature swings are meaningful — winter water temperatures can fall considerably in the rivers of Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay, and summer temperatures in shallow, sun-exposed reaches can climb into the upper 20s Celsius.

The broader habitat type for species in the scabripinnis complex encompasses clear to moderately turbid streams and rivers, often with some riparian vegetation providing cover and shade. The Laguna dos Patos system encompasses a large coastal lagoon complex and its tributary streams, ranging from blackwater/clearwater upland streams to lowland channels with varying substrate. Specific habitat data for P. laticeps beyond the drainage-level distribution are sparse in the published literature; the species is typically found in association with other small characids in these productive subtropical waterways.

Feeding

Astyanax species as a group are generalised omnivores, exploiting whatever food resources are locally abundant. In subtropical South American streams the diet typically encompasses small aquatic invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans), terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the surface, algae, and plant material grazed from submerged surfaces. No targeted dietary study of P. laticeps specifically appears in the available literature, but its membership in the scabripinnis complex and its habitat make an opportunistic omnivore strategy highly plausible.

In the aquarium, Astyanax from this complex generally accept a broad range of foods without difficulty: quality flake and small pellets form an adequate base diet, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, bloodworm, and brine shrimp to maintain condition and colour. As active, constantly moving fish they benefit from multiple small feedings per day rather than a single large one.

Mating

Psalidodon laticeps, consistent with other members of the scabripinnis complex and the genus at large, is an egg-scattering open spawner. No parental care is provided: once spawning is complete, adults take no further interest in eggs or fry. In nature, spawning in South American characids of this type is typically associated with the wet season and rising water levels, which trigger reproductive activity and disperse eggs and larvae into flooded marginal vegetation.

Captive observations of closely related Astyanax species indicate that spawning proceeds in the characteristic characid fashion: females scatter small, adhesive to semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants or other substrate, fertilised in passing by following males. Groups tend to spawn more readily than isolated pairs, and the eggs are not protected — adults will readily consume them if not separated.

Breeding

No detailed captive-breeding accounts specific to Psalidodon laticeps appear in the available hobbyist or scientific literature, likely reflecting the species' low profile in the international aquarium trade. By analogy with the rest of the scabripinnis complex and the genus, breeding is expected to follow the standard Astyanax protocol: condition a group of adults with varied live and frozen foods, provide a tank with fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops, allow a slight temperature drop followed by a warming to trigger spawning, then collect the scattered eggs to a separate rearing vessel.

Eggs typically hatch within two to three days at tropical temperatures; fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry foods initially before graduating to freshly hatched brine shrimp. Because adults eat eggs immediately, breeders should either remove the adults after spawning or harvest the mop/plant material. Growth in Astyanax of this size class is reasonably quick under good conditions, with juveniles reaching a size suitable for community tanks within a few months.

In the aquarium

Psalidodon laticeps is not an established aquarium fish in the mainstream hobby, and it is rarely available commercially outside of specialist collectors in southern South America. Its biology suggests it would behave much like other small, schooling Astyanax: an active, peaceful-to-mildly nippy fish best kept in a group of six or more in a well-planted tank with open swimming space. Its distribution in the cooler subtropical rivers of southern Brazil and Uruguay means it tolerates — and likely benefits from — lower temperatures than most tropical community fish, and does not need or want the 79–82 °F maintained for discus or apistogramma setups.

If encountered, it would be suited to an unheated or cool-water community tank alongside other South American temperate species. Water quality needs are undemanding: clean, well-oxygenated water with neutral to slightly acidic or alkaline pH and moderate hardness matches the conditions of its home rivers. It presents no particular difficulty for an aquarist with experience keeping schooling characids, but the absence of distinctive colour pattern or aquarium records means it remains primarily a fish of scientific interest rather than hobby demand.

Conservation

Psalidodon laticeps has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The absence of an assessment reflects the historical taxonomic confusion surrounding the scabripinnis complex — when species are repeatedly synonymised and revalidated, formal conservation evaluations tend to lag behind the taxonomy — rather than any presumption that the species is not at risk.

Its distribution across multiple river systems in southern Brazil and Uruguay, including the extensive Laguna dos Patos drainage and the Río de la Plata basin, suggests a broader range than many of the endemic or narrowly distributed members of the complex. However, subtropical South American freshwater systems face ongoing pressure from agricultural runoff, water abstraction, dam construction, and habitat modification, and small stream-dwelling characids are often sensitive to these changes. A formal IUCN assessment with up-to-date distribution and population data would be needed to evaluate the species' actual status.
