The Okavango is a river that never reaches the sea. Rain falling on the Angolan highlands gathers into the Cubango and Cuito, flows south across the Kalahari sands, and spreads into a vast alluvial fan in northern Botswana, where it evaporates and seeps away without ever finding an ocean. This is the largest endorheic delta in Africa, and its strangest trick is timing: the flood arrives in the middle of Botswana's dry winter, months after the rain that made it, turning a parched corner of the Kalahari into 12,000 square kilometres of clear, papyrus-lined water. The fishes that live here are mostly the cichlids of the Upper Zambezi system - tilapias, robust predatory Serranochromis, snail-crushing Sargochromis - now squeezed between oil exploration, Angolan dams, and a drying climate.

Geography & hydrology

The Okavango is one of very few large inland deltas on Earth with no outlet to the sea (FEOW Ecoregion 569). Its water rises more than a thousand kilometres away, on the Benguela and Bie plateaus of central Angola at 1,2297 ft or so, where two perennial rivers gather the highland rain. The Cubango drains the western catchment over harder rock; the Cuito drains the east, filtered slowly through deep Kalahari sands and peatlands that meter its flow out over months. The two meet at the Angola-Namibia border to form the Okavango proper, which runs southeast along the Caprivi Strip and then crosses into Botswana, where the river hits a shallow tectonic trough between fault lines and loses its single channel entirely.

What happens next is the delta. The river enters through a narrow corridor called the Panhandle, roughly 9 mi wide and confined by two faults, then fans out across an alluvial cone the size of a small country. The permanent swamp covers about 6,000 km2; when the annual flood arrives it swells to between 12,000 and 15,000 km2, an area visible from orbit as a green hand pressed into the tan of the Kalahari. There are no rapids and almost no gradient - the land falls only about 197 ft across the whole 250-km length of the fan, so water moves slowly through a maze of channels, lagoons and reedbeds before most of it simply evaporates. Around 97% of the inflow is lost to evaporation and transpiration; a thin remainder trickles out toward the Boteti River and Lake Ngami, or sinks into the Makgadikgadi pans.

The delta runs on an inverted calendar. Rain falls on the Angolan highlands between October and April, but the flood it produces does not reach the top of the delta until February or March and does not fill the distal floodplains until June through August - the depth of Botswana's dry season, when the Kalahari around it has had no rain for months. That lag, the product of distance and the Cuito's sponge-like catchment, is the single fact that organises everything that lives here. Fish, birds and large mammals all key their movements to a flood pulse that arrives, paradoxically, when the surrounding desert is at its driest (FEOW 569; Mosepele et al., Frontiers in Environmental Science, 2022).

Water & habitat

For a terminal basin with no outflow, the Okavango's water is astonishingly fresh. By rights an endorheic system that loses almost all its water to evaporation should turn salty, the way the Makgadikgadi pans downstream have. The delta does not, and the reason is the islands. As water creeps outward it is drawn up through the root mats of vegetated islands and transpired away, concentrating dissolved salts beneath the island centres until calcite, silica and carbonates precipitate out and are buried in the soil. The salts sink rather than spread. The result is open water that stays clear and soft year-round (Bauer-Gottwein and colleagues; Mmualefe & Torto, Water SA, 2011).

The chemistry reads like a soft-water aquarium. Electrical conductivity in the channels is generally below 200 microsiemens per centimetre and often far lower near the inlet, total dissolved solids average around 40 mg/L, and the water is nutrient-poor - oligotrophic, in the language of limnology. pH runs from about 6.7 in the inflowing channels up toward 10 in evaporating backwaters and island fringes. Dissolved oxygen swings widely, from roughly 1.8 mg/L in stagnant, vegetation-choked water to near 9 mg/L in flowing channels. Conductivity and temperature both climb along the flow path from the Panhandle at Mohembo down to Lake Ngami, so the delta is really a gradient rather than a single water type (Mmualefe & Torto, Water SA, 2011).

Habitat tracks that gradient. The permanently flooded northwest is a world of papyrus (Cyperus papyrus), common reed (Phragmites) and bulrush (Typha), with deep perennial channels kept open by hippo paths and the current, flanked by still lagoons. Move outward and the permanent swamp gives way to seasonal floodplain - grassland that is dry for half the year and shallow water for the other half - then to occasionally flooded margins and dry savanna of mopane and Zambezi teak (Baikiaea plurijuga). Fish sort themselves across this mosaic: deep channels and lagoons hold the larger cichlids and predators through the year, while the seasonal floodplains, fertilised by the dissolving of dry-phase soil nutrients each time the flood returns, become the nurseries. Upper-delta lagoons consistently carry more fish species than lagoons near the dry distal end (Mosepele et al., 2022).

The cichlid fauna

The Okavango holds roughly 71 fish species, and cichlids are the heart of the assemblage - by number of species, by biomass, and by their grip on the local fishery (Okavango Delta UNESCO World Heritage inscription, 2014; Mosepele et al., 2022). The fauna is not, for the most part, endemic to the delta. The Okavango shares its fishes with the Upper Zambezi, the two systems forming a single ichthyofaunal province whose cichlids spilled south from a Congo-basin ancestry (Musilova et al., PLOS ONE, 2013). What the delta offers is not a private flock but a working cross-section of the Zambezian cichlid radiation, living at the edge of the desert.

The tilapias are the obvious tier. Three large breams anchor the fishery: the threespot tilapia Oreochromis andersonii, the greenhead tilapia Oreochromis macrochir, and the smaller, hardy banded tilapia Tilapia sparrmanii, joined by the dwarf Okavango tilapia Tilapia ruweti in the weedy backwaters. These are the fish the delta's subsistence and small-scale fishers chase, mouth-brooders and substrate-spawners that flush onto the seasonal floodplain to breed when it fills.

Above them sit the serranochromines, the group that gives the Okavango its character. Serranochromis is a genus of big, deep-bodied predators - the roster's S. angusticeps (the thinface largemouth), S. macrocephalus, S. longimanus, S. thumbergi, S. jallae, S. altus and S. alvum - that hunt fish along channel edges and through the reed margins, the ecological equivalent of pike or bass in this soft, slow water. Their smaller relatives in Sargochromis (S. carlottae, S. codringtonii, S. giardi, S. greenwoodi) trade piscivory for crushing pharyngeal jaws and feed mostly on snails and aquatic insects. Pharyngochromis acuticeps, the Zambezi happy or Zambezi bream, is a more generalist haplochromine of the same lineage, with its congener P. darlingi present in the wider system, and the little southern mouthbrooder Pseudocrenilabrus philander rounds out the small-cichlid guild in vegetated shallows. Genetic work in the Angolan headwaters shows these serranochromines are still actively differentiating - Angolan Serranochromis populations form their own lineages, and the Cubango and Cuito sub-catchments may each hold distinct forms - so the deeper endemism of this system sits not in the Botswana delta but up in the Angolan source rivers that feed it (Musilova et al., 2013; Skelton, A Complete Guide to the Freshwater Fishes of Southern Africa, 2001).

Conservation

Almost everything that threatens the Okavango's fishes happens upstream of Botswana, where the delta itself is well protected as a Ramsar wetland and, since 2014, the 1,000th UNESCO World Heritage Site. The delta is only as healthy as the water Angola and Namibia let through, and the flood pulse - the dry-season arrival of Angolan rain - is the variable that everything depends on. Cut the flood and the seasonal floodplains that serve as fish nurseries shrink; the cichlids that spawn on them, and the fishery built on those cichlids, contract with them.

The most concrete near-term pressure is Angolan water infrastructure. As the country recovered from civil war it identified scores of potential dam, irrigation and supply projects in the Cubango-Okavango catchment. Two are now close to reality: the Calucuve and Ndue dams, built on seasonal channels of the Cubango system to store water diverted from the main river during the dry season. Satellite imagery from late September 2025 showed both structures nearing completion. Abstraction is also rising fast along the Namibia-Angola border, where the number of irrigation pipes drawing from the river jumped sharply between 2017 and 2023, and land clearing in the upper catchment reached an estimated 114 hectares a day (Conservation Namibia, 2021 and 2025).

Then there is oil. Since 2021 the Canadian company ReconAfrica has held exploration licences covering thousands of square kilometres of the Kavango Basin in northeast Namibia and adjacent Botswana, inside the Okavango's watershed, and has drilled test wells - some of it, investigators allege, on community conservancy land without proper consent, and amid securities-fraud complaints to the U.S. SEC. The fear voiced by conservationists is straightforward: drilling wastewater leaking into the shallow groundwater and ephemeral rivers that feed the delta, in a system that supplies drinking water to a quarter of a million people. The company has more recently shifted attention to the lower Cubango catchment in Angola, and the immediate drilling threat has eased somewhat, but the licences remain (Yale e360, 2021; National Geographic, 2021-2023; BirdLife International, 2023).

Over all of this sits a drying climate. The Okavango's flows are sensitive to small changes in Angolan rainfall, and a sustained reduction - whether from climate shift or upstream abstraction - would not need to be large to strip the seasonal flood the system runs on. For fishes adapted to a flood that arrives in the desert's dry season, the loss of that pulse is the threat that ties all the others together (Mosepele et al., 2022; Conservation Namibia, 2025).
