Taxonomy & naming
Marcusenius devosi was described in 2007 by Bernd Kramer, Paul Skelton, Frans van der Bank and Michael Wink, with its type locality on the Tana River in Kenya. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the African weakly electric elephantfishes — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues: an ancient, scattered radiation of fish found across four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and numbered among the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. The Mormyridae are an exclusively African family, and their electric sense evolved entirely independently of the superficially similar electric knifefishes of South America (order Gymnotiformes) — a case of convergent evolution, not shared ancestry.
The genus Marcusenius was erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862, honouring the naturalist Johann Marcusen. The species epithet devosi is a Latinised patronym honouring Dr Luc De Vos, the late curator of fishes at the National Museum in Nairobi, reflecting the species' Kenyan origin. As in most mormyrids, external anatomy alone rarely settles species identity in this genus; the original description and subsequent confirmation of Marcusenius devosi as distinct leaned on genetic and electric-organ-discharge (EOD) evidence as much as on visible characters, and aquarists should treat any casual visual identification of a Marcusenius with real caution.

Marcusenius devosi shows the general mormyrid build: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small terminal-to-slightly-inferior mouth, and a narrow caudal peduncle that houses the tail-mounted electric organ defining the family. FishBase records a dorsal fin of 21–24 soft rays and no spines, and an anal fin of 26–30 soft rays and no spines — fin-ray counts that, together with genetics, helped separate it from superficially similar Tana River mormyrids at its description.
