Marcusenius lucombesi is a small, weakly electric mormyrid — a member of the bonytongues (Osteoglossiformes), among the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish and named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. Described only in 2014 from a single Ruvuma River tributary inside Mozambique's Niassa Game Reserve, it belongs to the same electrosensory family as the familiar elephantnose, using a tail-mounted electric organ to read its dim, tannin-stained river home rather than relying on sight. It is a narrow, little-known endemic with essentially no aquarium-trade or captive-breeding history — this account is deliberately conservative, sticking to what the original description and general mormyrid biology actually support.

Taxonomy & naming

Marcusenius lucombesi belongs to the Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, a family within Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleost (bony) fishes. It was described in 2014 by Ross Maake, Ofer Gon and Albert Swartz in Zootaxa, one of three new Marcusenius species named together in that paper from the Ruvuma River system of southeastern Africa.

The type locality is the Lucombe River — specifically pools along the Lucombe stream near Nyati Road in the Niassa Game Reserve, Mozambique, part of the Ruvuma River drainage that forms much of the border between Mozambique and Tanzania. The holotype, a 2.91 in SL male held at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB 73884), anchors the description. Per the ETYFish Project, the genus Marcusenius honors Johann Marcusen (1817–1894), a Baltic German physician and ichthyologist, while the species epithet lucombesi simply names the Lucombe River of the type locality — a straightforward, place-based christening typical of many recently described African mormyrids.

Mormyridae is a large, still actively studied African family, and Marcusenius is one of its largest genera; new species continue to be described as detailed fin-ray counts and electric organ discharge (EOD) work resolve what were once assumed to be single wide-ranging species into several narrow-range ones. M. lucombesi is one such narrow endemic, currently documented only from its Ruvuma tributary type locality and nearby waters.

Morphology

Like other Marcusenius, M. lucombesi has the classic mormyrid body plan: an elongate, laterally compressed body, a small, near-terminal mouth suited to picking food from the substrate, and a slender caudal peduncle housing the electric organ near the tail. FishBase records a maximum size of 4.8 in standard length, with fin-ray and vertebral counts of 28–29 anal-fin rays, 22–24 dorsal-fin rays and 44 vertebrae — details that matter because many small Marcusenius species look almost identical externally and are properly separated only by fin-ray counts, subtle proportions, or their electric organ discharge signature rather than color pattern.

As with all mormyrids, M. lucombesi is weakly electric: a specialized electric organ in the caudal peduncle generates a continuous train of brief, low-voltage pulses used for electrolocation and communication (see Habitat and Mating). This comes bundled with one of the highest brain-to-body ratios of any fish — mormyrids carry a markedly enlarged cerebellum to process the constant stream of electrosensory information, and the family is frequently cited by neuroscientists studying sensory processing for exactly that reason.

Detailed external description beyond the original diagnosis is not widely available in the sources consulted here. The holotype male measured 2.91 in SL, well under the species' reported maximum, and no dedicated account of live coloration or sexual dimorphism appears in the literature searched — a common gap for a mormyrid described this recently and known from a single small river system.

Habitat

Marcusenius lucombesi is known from tributaries of the Ruvuma River in the Niassa Game Reserve of Mozambique, part of the southeastern African drainage the Ruvuma forms along much of the Mozambique–Tanzania border. FishBase describes its habitat as slow-flowing river reaches with aquatic vegetation and submerged root-stocks, ranging from headwater streams down to floodplain margins — the classic marginal, vegetated, benthopelagic water that many small mormyrids favor over open channel.

This is warm, tropical southeastern African river water, and like most mormyrid habitat it is typically soft and only lightly mineralized, running from slightly acidic to neutral and often stained with tannins from leaf litter and marginal vegetation — the dim, low-visibility conditions in which the weakly electric sense mormyrids depend on is thought to have evolved. Precise water-chemistry measurements taken at the Lucombe River type locality itself were not found in the sources consulted here; the ranges given under "In the aquarium" reflect general Mormyridae husbandry guidance rather than field data.

The species appears to be a narrow-range endemic — it is currently documented only from its Ruvuma tributary type locality and nearby reaches, and, as with many small, recently split Marcusenius, its full distribution within the wider Ruvuma system has not been thoroughly surveyed.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary study of M. lucombesi was found in the sources consulted here. Like other small Marcusenius and mormyrids generally, it almost certainly forages over sediment and among root-stocks and vegetation for benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — locating prey mostly by electrolocation rather than sight, since mormyrids are typically most active around dusk and after dark in naturally dim, tannin-stained water.

In the aquarium, mormyrids as a family are usually weaned onto frozen bloodworm, black mosquito larvae and other small meaty foods offered after lights-out, with sinking pellets accepted by many species once settled. No aquarium feeding record specific to M. lucombesi is available — data sparse.

Mating

Mormyrid mating and spawning behavior is poorly understood across the family, and M. lucombesi is no exception — no field observations of its courtship or spawning were found in the sources consulted here. What is known from mormyrids more generally is that the electric organ discharge (EOD), the same signal used for electrolocation, doubles as a courtship and species-recognition channel: males and females of many mormyrid species can be distinguished by subtle differences in their EOD waveform, and courtship is thought to involve exchanges of pulses between the sexes rather than visual display.

In the wild, mormyrids are typically seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, timing reproduction to the rains and the resulting rise in river levels and food availability — a pattern documented in better-studied relatives, though not confirmed specifically for M. lucombesi.

Breeding

Mormyrids as a family are essentially not bred in the home aquarium, and Marcusenius lucombesi has no reported captive-breeding record at all — unsurprising for a narrow-range species described only in 2014 and rarely if ever seen in the aquarium trade. What little is known of mormyrid reproduction comes largely from field observations of commoner relatives: some species are thought to scatter eggs among submerged plants and root-stocks in flooded marginal habitat, with the seasonal flood pulse itself acting as the spawning cue.

Parental care in mormyrids is likewise poorly documented; a few species are believed to guard eggs or newly hatched fry among vegetation, but this has not been confirmed for M. lucombesi. The honest position is that its reproductive biology remains essentially unknown, and any claim of successful home breeding of this species should be treated with real skepticism until documented.

In the aquarium

Marcusenius lucombesi does not appear to be an established aquarium fish — it is a narrow Ruvuma River endemic described only in 2014, and no aquarium-trade record or dedicated husbandry account for the species specifically was found in the sources consulted here. Anyone encountering it would be working largely from general Mormyridae care principles rather than species-specific experience.

Those general principles matter regardless: mormyrids want warm, stable water around 75–82 °F, a pH in roughly the 6–7.5 range (ideally toward 6.5–7.4, slightly acidic to neutral) and soft to moderately hard water (around 5–12 dGH), and they are notably sensitive to poor water quality, chlorine/chloramine and many common medications, so gentle, copper-free treatment and scrupulous water stability matter more than chasing an exact number. A tank of 39.4 in or more in length is the usual recommendation, furnished with driftwood, root-stocks and dim lighting to mirror the vegetated, tannin-tinted marginal water mormyrids come from.

Mormyrids are also not solitary fish by temperament — most species do poorly kept alone and are typically recommended in a group, though they can be territorial toward their own kind in a tank that is too small, so stocking numbers and tank size need to be matched carefully. Given the total absence of a documented care record for M. lucombesi itself, anyone who does encounter this species should treat it cautiously and be prepared to adapt rather than follow a fixed recipe.

Conservation

Marcusenius lucombesi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. This is unremarkable for a small, recently described (2014) mormyrid known from a limited stretch of the Ruvuma River system — many narrow-range African mormyrids sit in the same position simply because no formal assessment has yet been undertaken, not because of any known decline.

The type locality lies within the Niassa Game Reserve, one of Mozambique's largest protected areas, which affords the Lucombe River and its immediate catchment some habitat protection, though protection of the reserve's terrestrial wildlife does not necessarily equate to active monitoring of its small fish fauna. With no population data, trend information or threat assessment available, the honest summary is that this species' conservation status is simply unknown — data sparse.
