Aquascape & setup

Warm, soft to moderately soft water on the gentle side of neutral, in keeping with its lowland-river home. Keep it clean and steady — corys are sensitive to accumulated nitrate and to sudden swings.

Soft, fine sand is non-negotiable: corys feed by sifting substrate through their gills, and sharp or coarse gravel wears their barbels down to stubs. Driftwood, roots, leaf litter and some shade complete a river-margin look, with plenty of open sandy floor to work over.

Community & care

Corydoras are shoaling fish — keep six or more of the same species; a lone or paired cory is a stressed one. They are utterly peaceful bottom-dwellers and belong only with calm, similarly-sized community fish — small tetras, rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and the like — never with anything large or boisterous enough to bully a slow-moving fish working the floor.

Corydoras areio is a long-snouted armoured catfish of the upper Paraguay basin in Mato Grosso, Brazil, named for the small Córrego Areio where it was found. A close relative of the cervinus group and only occasionally seen in the hobby (where it carries the code C070), it is one of the species that — unusually among the great 2024 reshuffle of the genus — stays in Corydoras in the strict sense.

Taxonomy & naming

Corydoras areio was described by Gerhard Knaack in 2000, from streams of the Córrego Areio system near Vila Nova, east of Cuiabá in Mato Grosso, Brazil; the little creek gives the fish its epithet. It belongs to the long-snouted assemblage of the family Callichthyidae and was placed in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803.

The genus Corydoras had long been recognised as oversized and not a single natural group, and the 2024 phylogenomic revision by Dias, Tencatt and colleagues (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society) divided it into several genera — Brochis, Gastrodermus, Osteogaster, Hoplisoma and others — leaving a restricted Corydoras (sensu stricto), the 'saddle-snouted' lineage-1 group typified by C. geoffroy. C. areio falls within that lineage and therefore keeps the name Corydoras; it is one of the species for which the familiar genus name and the current Catalog-of-Fishes lineage genus happen to coincide. Catalog of Fishes treats areio as valid. Identification can be genuinely confusing: areio is close to C. cervinus and to the undescribed C028, and part of the material once identified as C. aurofrenatus has turned out to be areio, because some areio specimens show faded flank spots that mimic the aurofrenatus pattern — so the limits of these long-snouted species still need work.

Morphology

This is a medium-sized, long-snouted cory. Reported sizes vary with the measurement used: Planet Catfish gives about 2 in SL, while length-to-the-tail figures for males and females run to roughly 6.5 and 3 in respectively, the females being the larger sex. Like all corys it is armoured, with two rows of overlapping bony plates along each flank and a hard head, and it bears the genus's three pairs of barbels on a downturned mouth — here set on a notably elongate, slightly pointed snout.

The colour pattern is pale with darker spotting and blotches on the flanks that can be well defined or, in some individuals, distinctly faded — the variability that has caused it to be confused with related species. The dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins each carry a stiff leading spine. Females are larger and become rounder and broader-bodied than males, best seen from above; mature males tend to have more pointed fin tips.

Habitat

Corydoras areio is endemic to the upper Río Paraguay basin in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in the Córrego Areio drainage east of Cuiabá — part of the great La Plata system that ultimately drains south. It is a fish of small streams and their margins, over sand and soft sediment with leaf litter and submerged wood.

Reported aquarium-relevant conditions are warm and near-neutral — roughly 72–79 °F and pH about 6.5–7.5 — consistent with the clear and slightly turbid streams of the region, which experience marked seasonal flooding. As a typical cory it is a facultative air-breather, rising to gulp air that it absorbs through a modified, vascularised hindgut, which helps it cope with the warm, oxygen-poor pools of the dry season.

Feeding

Like its relatives, C. areio is a benthic omnivore that forages over the bottom, sifting sand and fine sediment with its barbels to extract small invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans and organic detritus. Its long snout is well suited to probing for food among litter and into the substrate. In the aquarium it readily takes prepared foods that reach the bottom — tablets, granules and larger flakes — as well as live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, whiteworm, grindal worm, Daphnia and Tubifex, the last especially useful for conditioning a group for spawning. A varied diet keeps it healthy, and it should not be left to live on leftovers.

Mating

No spawning account specific to C. areio has been published, but as a member of Corydoras it is expected to follow the genus's well-documented courtship. They are egg-laying shoalers without a pair bond: a ready female cleans a spawning site, the group becomes active, and a male takes the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head. The female clasps a small number of eggs in a pelvic-fin basket while they are fertilised, then carries them to a cleaned surface — leaf, wood or glass — and presses them into place, repeating the sequence until the clutch is complete.

Breeding

There is no published breeding report for C. areio, and it is rarely kept, but it is expected to reproduce in the standard Corydoras manner. Spawning in the genus is typically triggered by a cool, generous water change imitating the rainy season; the adhesive eggs are laid in small batches on surfaces and receive no parental care, with adults inclined to eat them, so breeders remove either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days, and the fry take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods once the yolk is absorbed. Honest note: these details are inferred from the genus rather than from confirmed records for areio.

In the aquarium

C. areio is a peaceful, shoaling community fish, well suited to most calm aquaria, though it is not often available. As with all corys it should be kept in a group of at least six; smaller numbers leave it withdrawn and stressed. It needs bottom area more than height and appreciates a well-planted layout.

Provide soft sand or smooth, rounded fine gravel: as a long-snouted sifter it is especially prone to barbel damage on sharp or chipped gravel, which erodes and infects the barbels. Border the open feeding area with driftwood and plants, and offer some shade from rockwork, bogwood or floating plants. Keep the water warm (about 72–79 °F), well-filtered and well-oxygenated, with gentle current and regular water changes; it tolerates a near-neutral pH and a moderate hardness range. It mixes well with small tetras, rasboras, dwarf cichlids and other quiet species, and should not be kept with large or boisterous tankmates. The usual cory cautions apply: the fin spines can tangle in nets (use a cup), and a badly stressed cory can release skin toxins that may harm a whole group in a transport bag.

Conservation

Corydoras areio is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern (assessed 2018). It is a small-range species of the upper Paraguay drainage but no specific major threat has been identified for it, and its habitat is not under acute, targeted pressure. As with all freshwater fishes of the Cerrado and the upper La Plata system, the broad regional pressures — agricultural expansion and run-off, land clearance and habitat alteration — bear on the small streams it inhabits, and a narrowly distributed species is inherently more exposed to local change than a widespread one. There is no species-specific conservation programme, and the chief uncertainty remains taxonomic, given the ongoing confusion within this long-snouted complex.
