Hybridization watchi

Bujurquina zamorensis is a small acara cichlid endemic to the Andean foothill rivers of the Ecuadorian Amazon, where it was first collected on the Río Zamora that gives it its name. Like the rest of its genus, it is a 'saki' acara — a biparental, delayed (larvophile) mouthbrooder that spawns on a leaf or stone and then carries the developing larvae in the mouths of both parents. Modest in size and quietly patterned, it is far better known to ichthyologists charting the Zamora-Santiago drainage than to aquarists, who rarely encounter it in the trade.

Taxonomy & naming

The species was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1905 as Acara zamorensis, in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, from material taken in the Río Zamora of the Amazon system of Ecuador. The name rests on a single specimen — the unique holotype, BMNH 1898.12.31.35, in the Natural History Museum, London — making it one of the many cichlids Regan named from museum collections during his sweeping early-twentieth-century survey of the family. For most of the twentieth century the fish sat within the catch-all genus Aequidens, and Ovchynnyk (1967) listed it as Aequidens zamorensis in his account of Ecuadorian fishes. Its modern placement dates to Sven O. Kullander's reorganisation of the Amazonian 'acaras'. In his 1986 monograph on the cichlids of Peru's Amazon drainage Kullander erected the genus Bujurquina to hold an assemblage of biparentally custodial, primitive (delayed) mouthbrooding acaras formerly lumped in Aequidens; he formally transferred zamorensis into Bujurquina in the 2003 Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America. Subsequent workers — Arbour & López-Fernández (2014), Barriga Salazar (2014) and Říčan and colleagues (2022, 2023) — have all retained the combination, and Bujurquina zamorensis (Regan 1905) is the current valid name. Within the genus it belongs to the Ecuadorian assemblage of the upper Marañón system, and recent morphometric work treats its type population as one anchor for understanding the genus's repeated divergence into stream- and pool-dwelling body forms.

Morphology

Bujurquina zamorensis is a small, fairly typical acara: a laterally compressed, moderately deep-bodied cichlid with the rounded head and continuous lateral band that characterise the genus. The maximum size on record is modest — FishBase cites 3 in standard length from Kullander's checklist material — so even large adults are compact fish well under a hand's span, smaller than several of the better-known Peruvian congeners. Colour in life is understated relative to flashier dwarf cichlids: a brassy-grey to olive ground, often with a faint blue or green sheen on the cheeks and flanks, crossed by the dark mid-lateral stripe and a series of faint vertical bars that the fish can intensify or suppress with mood. Bujurquina species are told apart largely by fine details of this pattern — the extent of the lateral band, the presence or absence of a predorsal mark on the nape, a suborbital stripe or preopercular spot, and the shape and markings of the dorsal-fin lappets and caudal fin — and by proportions such as caudal-peduncle length; in zamorensis the caudal peduncle is reported as relatively long, longer than deep. As in the genus generally, mature males tend to be the larger, more strongly coloured sex and may carry slightly extended, filamentous tips to the dorsal, anal and caudal fins, while ripe females are rounder-bodied and plainer; the dimorphism is real but subtle, and the sexes are not always easy to separate outside breeding condition.

Habitat

This is a fish of the Andean piedmont rather than the lowland flooded forest most people picture for an Amazonian cichlid. It is endemic to the Ecuadorian Amazon, where it occurs in the Upano-Zamora and Morona-Santiago drainages of the upper Marañón system — the headwater rivers that tumble off the eastern flank of the Andes before joining the greater Amazon basin. The IUCN assessment records it between roughly 400 and 1,0 ft above sea level, an unusually high elevation band for a cichlid and a reflection of its foothill home. Congeners and the broader genus inhabit forest streams with near-colourless, clear to slightly turbid water and moderate to swift current that rises and falls with the rains, and the recent ecomorphological work on Bujurquina frames these Andean-foothill species as occupants of fast-running, bouldery, clear-water streams and associated pools. Specific in-situ chemistry for Bujurquina zamorensis has not been widely published, but the genus as a whole occupies soft to moderately mineralised, warm, near-neutral to mildly acidic water; FishBase classes the fish as a freshwater, benthopelagic, tropical river-dweller. Its restriction to two adjacent foothill drainages makes it a genuine regional endemic rather than a widespread Amazonian generalist.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study of Bujurquina zamorensis has been published, and FishBase carries no gut-content data for the species; the available estimate of its trophic position (around 3.4) is modelled from its size and the diets of close relatives rather than measured. What can be said comes from the biology of the genus and of small acaras generally. Bujurquina are benthic-leaning omnivores of forest streams, working the bottom and the leaf litter for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, and taking algae, detritus and organic particles alongside animal prey. They are not specialised sand-sifting eartheaters like Satanoperca or Geophagus, but neither are they predators; the picture is of an opportunistic generalist scaled to a small fish in a current-swept stream. In captivity congeners accept the full range of prepared and live foods readily, which is consistent with a flexible, unfussy feeding strategy in the wild.

Mating

Bujurquina form monogamous pairs, and the social run-up to breeding is built around pair formation and joint defence of a small territory rather than the lek-like displays of some cichlids. Where the behaviour has been watched in the genus, a male and female sort themselves out of a group — sometimes after the dominant pair drives off rival females — and then set up house together in a chosen spot, typically the centre of their space, which they defend as a unit. The bond is cooperative: both partners share in courtship, in cleaning the spawning site, and afterwards in guarding and carrying the brood, which is the defining feature of these biparental mouthbrooders. Keepers of congeners describe them as mild-tempered toward other species but understandably nervous and protective once a pair has committed to a site, and prone to skittish dashing if disturbed. Specific courtship observations for Bujurquina zamorensis itself have not been documented, but there is no reason to expect it to depart from this well-established genus pattern.

Breeding

The reproductive biology of Bujurquina zamorensis has not been described in detail, but the genus's mode of reproduction is one of its most distinctive traits and is well documented in its relatives. Bujurquina are biparental, delayed (larvophile) mouthbrooders — the strategy Kullander used to characterise the genus when he split it from Aequidens. The pair first spawns in the open like a substrate-brooder, laying the eggs on a firm surface, very often a fallen leaf (congeners will spawn on leaves, stones or, in tanks, the inside of a coconut shell or slate). For the first phase the eggs are tended on the substrate, and a notable genus behaviour is that the parents may pick up and physically shift the egg-bearing leaf around the territory, apparently in response to predators or changing water levels. After the eggs hatch — the 'delayed' part of the cycle — both parents take the larvae into their mouths and become true mouthbrooders, sheltering the developing young and releasing free-swimming fry that dart back into a parent's mouth at any threat before being led out to forage again. Clutches in the genus are modest: the well-studied congener Bujurquina vittata lays up to about 400 eggs, a reasonable genus-typical figure for a small acara, and Bujurquina zamorensis is unlikely to exceed it given its smaller size. Parental care is shared and prolonged through the free-swimming stage, with the pair guarding and corralling the fry for a couple of weeks before independence. None of the captive-spawning accounts in the hobby literature are specifically of zamorensis; the description here is genus-typical and flagged as such.

In the aquarium

Bujurquina zamorensis is essentially an ichthyologist's fish rather than an aquarium-trade staple. It is not a documented export species — it comes from two relatively inaccessible Andean-foothill drainages in eastern Ecuador rather than from the lowland collecting hubs that supply ornamental fish — so it almost never appears in shops, and there is no body of dedicated hobby keeping or breeding reports for it. Anyone who did obtain it would be extrapolating from the husbandry of its small mouthbrooding congeners, which is well understood and not demanding. A single pair is comfortable in a modest tank of around 20 US gal (a standard 30 US gallon, roughly 35.5 in long); a soft sand or fine-gravel bottom, leaf litter, driftwood and a few flat stones or a half coconut shell as spawning sites suit the genus, and dim lighting with cover helps settle what are naturally rather nervous fish. Because it is a foothill-stream species, it appreciates clean, well-oxygenated water with some gentle to moderate flow rather than the still blackwater conditions associated with lowland dwarf cichlids. Target soft to moderately hard water that is warm and close to neutral — broadly a temperature in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and a pH around 6.0 to 7.5, mirroring the clear foothill streams it inhabits; it does not require extreme softness or acidity. Feeding is straightforward: small acaras of this genus take flake, micro-pellets and live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp without fuss. Temperament is mild outside breeding, so peaceful, similarly sized stream tankmates are fine, but a committed pair will defend its brood and is best given space and sightline breaks. The realistic summary is that this is a perfectly keepable little cichlid in principle, but one almost no aquarist will ever have the chance to keep.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Bujurquina zamorensis as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out by P. Arguello (Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador) and dated 9 October 2014, with the population trend listed as unknown. The Least Concern ranking reflects that, although the species is a narrow regional endemic confined to the Upano-Zamora and Morona-Santiago basins of the Ecuadorian Amazon between about 400 and 1,0 ft elevation, no specific population-level threat has been documented and it is not targeted by fisheries. It carries no CITES or CMS listing. That said, a range this restricted is inherently less buffered than that of a widespread Amazonian cichlid: foothill rivers on the eastern flank of the Ecuadorian Andes face mounting pressures from deforestation, agricultural and urban runoff, road building, and — increasingly across the region — hydropower development and mining in headwater catchments. None of these is recorded as a present, quantified danger to this particular fish, but they are the backdrop against which the conservation status of a single-region endemic should be read, and they argue for keeping an eye on a species whose population trajectory is, by IUCN's own note, simply unknown.
