Taxonomy & naming
Apistogramma pantalone was described by Uwe Römer, Ekkehard Römer, Daniel P. Soares and Ingo Hahn in 2006, in the second volume of Römer's monumental Cichlid Atlas (Mergus). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, FishBase and GBIF all record the authority as Römer, Römer, Soares & Hahn, 2006; an older hobby habit of writing it as "Römer & Hahn, 2008," and the Cichlid Room Companion's listing of the describers as "Römer, Pretor & Hahn," both contradict the primary record and are not used here. The type locality is a small tributary of the Río Nanay near Alvarenga, in District Santa María, Province Maynas, Departamento Loreto, Peru (about 74°25'40" W, 3°31'10" S), where the ornamental exporter Martin Mortenthaler collected the wild types in 2002. The holotype is held in Dresden under register MTD F 28795 — the Museum für Tierkunde Dresden collection, now part of the Senckenberg Naturhistorische Sammlungen (SNSD) — with paratypes split between Dresden and the California Academy of Sciences (CAS).
The genus name Apistogramma is read from the Greek apistos (uncertain, doubtful) and gramma (a written mark or line), a nod to the often broken, hard-to-read lateral line of these dwarf cichlids. The epithet is the memorable half: pantalone is Pantalone, the greedy, high-status old man of commedia dell'arte who clumsily and usually vainly pursued young women — applied here to the species' unusually stiff, protracted courtship. Both FishBase and Seriously Fish give the same etymology. In the trade the fish has circulated under provisional labels including Apistogramma sp. "Lyretail," Apistogramma sp. "Lyretail Panduro," Apistogramma sp. "Leierschwanz" and Apistogramma sp. "Gabelschwanz," and carries the informal A-number A186; none is a settled English common name, so the page treats them as trade tags rather than aliases. Workers place Apistogramma pantalone in the Apistogramma nijsseni group within the broader Apistogramma trifasciata lineage, alongside small, sexually distinct Peruvian blackwater dwarfs; the genus itself sits in the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae (Cichlinae).
Morphology
This is a genuinely small cichlid even by Apistogramma standards. FishBase records a maximum of about 1.5 in standard length (SL, snout to tail base) for a preserved female, while aquarium sources such as Seriously Fish put males nearer 2 in and females around 1.5 in in total length including the tail — so a realistic adult is a fish of roughly 1.5–2 in. Fin counts are typical for the genus: around 16 dorsal spines with seven soft rays, three anal spines, and five to seven anal soft rays. The body wears the muted, finely speckled tan-to-grey ground colour of a leaf-litter dweller, not the gaudy reds and oranges of show dwarfs like Apistogramma cacatuoides.
Sexing is subtler than in those showy congeners and reliable only in fully grown adults. Males grow larger, develop longer fin extensions, and show dark pigment or speckling on the belly; in bigger males the caudal-peduncle spot bleeds further back into the tail. Females stay smaller, keep a clean white belly, and carry black on the leading edge of the pelvic (ventral) fins. One useful tell, noted by careful keepers, is that female Apistogramma pantalone hold a strong yellow ground colour much of the time — not only when brooding — unlike many dwarf cichlids whose females flush yellow only in breeding dress. The species is easily confused with its close relative Apistogramma martini, with which it shares streams; the two look very similar and should never be mixed in the aquarium.
Habitat
As far as anyone has documented, Apistogramma pantalone is endemic to the Río Nanay system, a clear- to blackwater tributary of the upper Amazon (the Marañón–Amazonas) near Iquitos in Loreto, Peru. FishBase, GBIF and the IUCN all summarise its range simply as "Peru," and the Catalog of Fishes gives it as the Río Nanay drainage of the upper Amazon basin, which lies within the Amazonas Lowlands freshwater ecoregion. GBIF holds only about twenty occurrence records and three georeferenced points — a thin global footprint that reflects both a small natural range and how little of this remote forest has been surveyed.
The biotope is classic Peruvian dwarf-cichlid country: shallow, shaded forest brooks running over sand and a deep mat of leaf litter, the water lightly tea-stained, soft, fast-flowing and strikingly acidic. The original description characterises the habitat as small sandy streams, usually without aquatic vegetation, with crystal-clear, acid water. In-situ measurements from a stream in the nearby Río Tigre drainage that yielded this fish came in at about 77 °F and pH 4.54 — hyper-acidic by aquarium standards, and consistent with the near-zero dissolved-mineral content of these forest waters. No depth band has been published; these are shallow brooks rather than deep channels, so the figures given here (about 0–3 ft) are a defensible estimate from the biotope rather than a measured range, and should be read that way. Recorded stream companions include the dwarf cichlid Apistogramma martini, the pencilfish Nannostomus mortenthaleri, and small characins such as Pyrrhulina brevis and Crenuchus spilurus — several of which will eat eggs and fry, a detail that shapes how this fish breeds.
Feeding
Like its congeners, Apistogramma pantalone is a micropredator that works the leaf litter and stream bed. Apistogramma as a genus are chiefly carnivorous, feeding on small benthic invertebrates in nature, and FishBase's modelled trophic level of about 3.2 for this species fits a diet of aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and other tiny prey sifted from detritus. There is no published gut-content study specific to Apistogramma pantalone; the picture is inferred from close relatives and genus-wide feeding behaviour, and is treated as such.
In its native streams the species sits low in a leaf-litter food web driven largely by allochthonous input — leaves, fruit and terrestrial invertebrates falling in from the surrounding flooded forest — rather than by in-stream algal production, which is limited in these dark, nutrient-poor blackwaters. As a small, cryptic bottom-dweller it is both a predator of invertebrates and potential prey for larger fishes and the very characins it lives among, which helps explain the caution it shows around open water. In the aquarium this carnivorous bias is a practical sticking point: wild imports are notoriously picky, often refuse dry food entirely, and need live and frozen foods — Artemia, Daphnia, Moina and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae — with tubifex useful as an acclimation food.
Mating
Courtship is this species' party piece and the source of its name. Keepers and the describing literature report an unusually protracted ritual — sometimes lasting days or even weeks — led by the male. He begins by swimming repeatedly toward the female with jerks of the head; she avoids these advances and eventually retreats, whereupon he pursues, cutting off her escape with a zig-zag chase. In the final phase both fish enter a cave and perform a courtship dance that observers have likened to that of the ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) — a display not recorded in other Apistogramma. It is this stiff, fumbling, drawn-out pursuit, more than any single feature, that earned the fish its Pantalone epithet.
The Cichlid Room Companion characterises the mating system as polygynous harem brooding, the usual Apistogramma pattern in which one male holds and defends a territory overlapping those of several females. Seriously Fish notes, however, that the unusual courtship makes it genuinely unclear whether classic harem spawning operates here, and reports that — atypically for the genus — Apistogramma pantalone can be maintained as a group rather than strictly one male to a clutch of females. That tension is best left as an open question rather than resolved by assumption.
Breeding
The most interesting thing about Apistogramma pantalone is reproductive. Most Apistogramma are cave-spawning substrate brooders, laying eggs on the roof of a crevice and guarding the fry; Apistogramma pantalone does this too, but it is also a facultative larvophilic mouthbrooder. Depending on temperature the eggs hatch in roughly 36–72 hours, and after hatching the female may take the wrigglers into her mouth rather than leave them on the substrate — "facultative" meaning she does this only some of the time, in response to circumstances. It belongs to the small, much-discussed cluster of mouthbrooding Apistogramma that includes Apistogramma barlowi and Apistogramma megastoma and the undescribed forms Apistogramma sp. "D10" and "D50" (and, more tentatively, Apistogramma atahualpa), documented by collectors such as Tom Christoffersen. The favoured explanation, repeated in the description literature and the hobby, is predation pressure: in streams full of small egg- and fry-eating characins, carrying the young is a hedge against losing a clutch.
No clutch count specific to Apistogramma pantalone has been published; like other small Apistogramma it is a low-fecundity fish, and in the absence of a measured figure a genus-typical clutch of roughly 40–80 eggs is the best available guide (FishBase models fecundity below 1,000, and a population doubling time of 1.4–4.4 years on that basis). Care is maternal: the female tends the eggs and post-hatch larvae, fanning and guarding them and brooding them orally when she chooses to, while the male defends the wider territory. The species is reluctant and demanding to breed: it does not tolerate water far from its native blackwater, eggs simply will not develop in hard water, and successful captive reproduction is uncommon — captive-bred stock is rarer still than the sporadic wild imports. The reported triggers are the genus-standard ones — very soft, acidic water, frequent water changes, and a rich live-food diet — applied with more care than hardier dwarfs require.
In the aquarium
Demanding and rarely seen: Apistogramma pantalone reaches the hobby almost only as wild-caught stock from the Iquitos trade (the Nanay and neighbouring drainages), with captive-bred fish almost nonexistent. Little keeper experience is published — far less than for workhorses like Apistogramma cacatuoides or Apistogramma borellii — so the guidance below leans on the species' own documented biology and, where that runs out, on care norms for the Apistogramma nijsseni group and Peruvian blackwater Apistogramma generally.
Water is the non-negotiable. The native streams run near pH 4.5 with almost no dissolved minerals; a captive fish need not sit at hyper-acid values, but the moderately hard, circumneutral tap water many dwarfs accept will not do. Aim for pH 5.0–6.5 and total hardness below 3° dH — eggs and larvae are especially hardness-intolerant, and most breeding failures trace to water that was not soft enough. Reverse-osmosis water, lightly remineralised, is the practical route in hard-water areas; blackwater extract or Indian almond (Catappa) leaves nudge pH down and add tannins. Hold 73–79 °F; brief spells above 79 °F stress a fish built for cool, shaded brooks.
Tank: for one male and two or more females, a planted 15–20 US gal tank (about 60 × 15.5 in) is the floor — longer is better, as territorial males harass females without sightline breaks. Use fine sand, a deep bed of dried beech, oak or Catappa leaves, and several small ceramic or coconut-shell caves, one per female plus spares.
Tankmates: a shoal of pencilfish (Nannostomus species, especially the co-occurring Nannostomus mortenthaleri) or a small Amazonian tetra up in the water column draws the pair out and calms skittish wild fish. Avoid anything big enough to eat a 1–2 in cichlid, anything aggressive, and — critically — the near-identical Apistogramma martini, which shares the Nanay streams and would hybridise; keep other Apistogramma out of all but very large tanks.
Feeding and mistakes: wild imports routinely refuse dry food at first, and pushing an inadequate diet is the usual early error. Start with live or frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina and bloodworm — small live tubifex or white worms can break initial refusal — then move toward frozen invertebrates and, if accepted, small high-protein micro-pellets. In this soft, poorly buffered water overfeeding fouls things fast, so feed little and often and siphon leftovers. Juveniles are hard to sex, which complicates assembling a balanced group. All told, this sits at the demanding end of the genus and is not a beginner's Apistogramma.
Conservation
Apistogramma pantalone is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 25 April 2014 by H. Ortega Torres and published in the 2016 update. Data Deficient is not a clean bill of health — it means there is simply not enough information on range, population size, trend, ecology and threats to assign a category, and the assessment says as much. The species is not covered by CITES. Collection for the ornamental aquarium trade exists, but the fish's fragility in transit keeps trade volumes low rather than driving heavy harvest, and no targeted threat to it has been documented. Given how small and localised its known distribution is, a precautionary reading would still treat a single-river endemic with this little data as one to watch rather than dismiss.
Placed in the wider Amazon picture, this is a familiar story. For a leaf-litter blackwater specialist like Apistogramma pantalone, the realistic risks are local and habitat-driven: deforestation and land-use change in the Nanay catchment near fast-growing Iquitos, which can alter the shading, acidity and leaf-litter input these acid-water streams depend on. The Nanay's hyper-acidic, nutrient-poor chemistry is exactly the kind of finely tuned habitat that is degraded by clearing and runoff long before a fish is ever fished out. None of this is documented as a present danger to this particular cichlid, but it is the backdrop against which a Data-Deficient, narrow-range endemic should be read.
