Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Chindongo sp. 'elongatus spot' has no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Like other trade names built on 'Elongatus,' it places this form within the informal elongatus complex, a group of small, slender, multiply barred mbuna named after Pseudotropheus elongatus, described by Geoffrey Fryer in the 1950s and placed by some authors today in Chindongo, the genus Ad Konings erected in 2016 for a set of small mbuna formerly grouped in Pseudotropheus. Here the qualifier is a colour feature, 'Spot,' rather than a single named locality, implying a discrete dark or pale marking that distinguishes this population from other elongatus-group forms recorded elsewhere in the lake, including Chindongo sp. 'elongatus mphanga' far to the north.

Morphology

Elongatus-group Chindongo share a slender, elongated body plan with multiple narrow vertical bars, typically on a blue ground colour in males. The 'Spot' in this form's name implies an additional discrete marking, plausibly on the flank or a fin, beyond the standard barred pattern, though its precise position and appearance are not documented in a formal published source, and this account does not invent one. Precise measurements — standard length, body depth ratio, fin ray counts — have not been published for this form, and none are estimated here beyond the genus-typical range. Sexual size dimorphism in mbuna generally favours males, which grow larger and hold territories, while females stay smaller and range more freely between reefs. Juveniles of most mbuna, including this genus, are typically drab or barred regardless of eventual sex, with the adult colour pattern and sexual dichromatism developing only as fish approach maturity.

Habitat

This form is documented from a small cluster of reefs near the Tanzania-Mozambique border in the northeastern part of Lake Malawi — Chiwindi and Londo Bay on the Mozambique shore, Liuli and Lundo Island on the Tanzanian shore, and Hai Reef recorded without precise coordinates. This places it well south of Chindongo sp. 'elongatus mphanga,' documented near Chilumba, consistent with the elongatus complex's pattern of producing distinct local forms at separate points along the lake's rocky shoreline. Lake Malawi's rocky shoreline experiences strong wave action near the surface, and mbuna reefs typically grade from bare, wave-swept rock in the shallows to more sheltered crevice habitat with depth. Water chemistry is essentially uniform throughout the lake's oxygenated upper layer — hard and strongly alkaline — so differences between reefs are mostly about rock structure, wave exposure and depth rather than water quality.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to this form exists. Like other Chindongo in the elongatus group, it is expected to be an algae grazer, cropping the aufwuchs film from rock with fine dentition suited to a small mbuna. Mbuna have relatively long, coiled intestines adapted to a diet dominated by plant matter, and captive keepers generally avoid high-protein foods, since a rich diet is strongly linked to so-called Malawi bloat, an often fatal intestinal distension seen in aufwuchs-grazing cichlids fed inappropriately. In the wild, territorial males spend much of the day tending and re-grazing the same patch of algae, effectively farming it, and chase off both rival males and other grazing species that intrude on the territory.

Mating

Breeding males are expected to hold small rock territories in the standard mbuna lek system, without pair bonding, displaying to ripe females. No courtship behaviour specific to this population has been separately documented. As in other mbuna, males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin that mimic the female's own eggs; during spawning, while the female collects the true fertilised eggs into her mouth, she is thought to peck at these spots, prompting the male to release sperm that she draws in, completing fertilisation inside her mouth. This egg-spot mechanism underlies mouthbrooding reproduction across Lake Malawi's cichlid radiation generally, and a male typically maintains and repeatedly refreshes his territory across many spawning cycles with different females rather than forming any lasting pair bond with one partner.

Breeding

Reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding, as in all Chindongo. The female broods the fertilised eggs alone in her mouth, typically for around three to four weeks, before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care. Clutch size is expected to be modest given the small adult size typical of the elongatus group, but has not been documented for this form specifically. Comparably sized mbuna typically produce clutches in the range of 15 to 40 eggs, with larger, more experienced females producing more. A brooding female usually stops feeding or feeds only lightly for the duration, loses visible condition, and seeks out sheltered, less exposed parts of the reef until the fry are released; newly released fry often dart back into the mother's mouth at the first sign of danger for a few additional days before becoming fully independent.

In the aquarium

This form is not established as a widely available aquarium fish under this name. General care for small elongatus-group Chindongo applies: a well-rockworked tank with numerous caves, hard alkaline water in the mid-20s Celsius, and an algae-forward, spirulina-based diet. Because elongatus-group species can be visually similar, keepers wanting to maintain pure locality stock should track the collection point rather than assume any barred Chindongo is interchangeable. A stocking ratio of one male to three or more females is standard practice for mbuna, spreading territorial and spawning attention and reducing stress on any single female. Weekly partial water changes and efficient filtration matter given the bioload of a densely stocked mbuna tank, and abrupt swings in water chemistry should be avoided, since Malawi cichlids are adapted to the lake's remarkably stable conditions.

Conservation

Chindongo sp. 'elongatus spot' has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and, as an undescribed form, is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its apparent restriction to a small reef cluster near the Tanzania-Mozambique border, typical of the elongatus group generally, leaves it more exposed to localised threats — targeted ornamental collection and shoreline disturbance — than a wider-ranging species would be. Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting pressure from overfishing of food species, sediment runoff tied to catchment deforestation, and a warming climate altering the lake's thermal stratification and deep-water oxygen levels. The ornamental trade is a comparatively minor pressure next to the food fishery by volume, and well-managed collection can give local communities a direct economic incentive to protect reef habitat, though that balance depends heavily on how any particular fishery is run.
