Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus" is not a formally described species. It carries no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The placeholder name follows standard convention for undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna: the genus Chindongo, the qualifier "sp." marking undescribed status, and a compound trade name — "Elongatus" for the crevice-feeding complex it belongs to, and "Ornatus" for its more patterned coloration relative to plainer elongatus-complex forms. It is recognised through field and aquarium literature, chiefly the work of Ad Konings, who erected Chindongo in 2016 for a group of species previously placed in Pseudotropheus and Metriaclima. A geographically separate population carrying the same "Ornatus" pattern qualifier is traded from Tanzanian waters as Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus Tanzania"; whether the two represent one wide-ranging undescribed taxon or two independently convergent forms has not been resolved and should not be asserted either way. Until formally described, no authority or date should be attached to this Likoma-area population.
Morphology
This form carries the diagnostic build of the elongatus complex: a slender, elongate body and narrow head that let it work into tight rock crevices inaccessible to deeper-bodied mbuna. Genus-typical size for elongatus-type Chindongo runs smaller than the genus average, roughly 3–3.5 in total length. The "Ornatus" qualifier signals a more patterned coloration than the plainer brown elongatus-complex forms, though the precise pattern and colours of this Likoma-area population have not been documented in detail in the sources available to this account and should not be guessed at. Males are expected to carry the egg-spot markings on the anal fin typical of the genus and to show more intense coloration than females. No formally published character separates this population from other elongatus-complex relatives; identification currently rests on collection locality.
Habitat
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus" is documented from Likoma Island and nearby Ndumbi Rocks, in the eastern-central section of Lake Malawi — an area with a long history of producing distinct, tightly localised mbuna forms, in part because of Likoma's relative isolation from the mainland shore. Elongatus-complex Chindongo specialise in rock habitats offering abundant narrow crevices and fissures rather than open rock faces, and this population is expected to follow the same pattern. Water conditions follow the lake-wide norm: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Its range beyond the two documented sites near Likoma is not established.
Feeding
Elongatus-complex Chindongo, including this form, are algae grazers specialised for reaching into narrow rock crevices that other mbuna cannot access, using their slender body to work into fissures and their comb-like teeth to rasp the algal film, or Aufwuchs, from crevice walls. This crevice-feeding niche reduces direct competition with the deeper-bodied, open-rock grazers dominating more exposed surfaces of the same reefs. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the well-documented pattern for the elongatus complex.
Mating
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus" is expected to follow the polygynous, lek-like mating system typical of Lake Malawi mbuna, with no pair bond. Males are expected to establish and defend small territories, likely centred on a favoured crevice given the group's specialised habitat use, displaying to attract passing females while excluding rival males. Females move between territories and select a courting male before spawning at his site. No courtship study specific to this population has been published; this account is inferred from the well-documented mating system shared across Chindongo and the wider mbuna assemblage.
Breeding
Like all Chindongo, this form is a maternal mouthbrooder. Following spawning, the female takes the eggs into her mouth; contact with the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, as she attempts to gather what appear to be further eggs, triggers fertilisation of the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. She broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during that period, before releasing free-swimming fry capable of independent feeding. There is no paternal or biparental care beyond this. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific form but is expected to be modest given its smaller-than-average body size within the genus.
In the aquarium
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus" reaches the trade as a more patterned member of the popular elongatus-complex Chindongo, sourced specifically from the Likoma Island area.
A rockwork setup with genuinely narrow crevices and fissures, not just open caves, better matches this fish's specialised feeding behaviour than a simple pile of boulders. A footprint of at least 39.5–47 in is a reasonable minimum, stocked as one male with several females to spread territorial pressure. Water should follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and alkaline, with regular partial water changes to control nitrate. Diet should lean vegetable-forward — a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet as staple, supplemented occasionally with blanched greens — since high-fat, high-protein diets predispose mbuna to bloat. Because a similarly named "Ornatus" form is traded from Tanzanian waters further north, keepers wishing to preserve this Likoma-area population's identity should keep the two apart and avoid crossing them.
Conservation
Chindongo sp. "Elongatus Ornatus" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form without a published scientific name, it has no Red List status of any kind — a statement about its taxonomic situation, not about its wild population safety. As a form tightly restricted to the Likoma Island area, it faces the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid fauna: ornamental collection, inshore habitat disturbance, and sediment inputs. Tightly localised endemics of this kind are, in general, more vulnerable to local disturbance than wide-ranging species simply because their entire known population occupies a small area, though no assessment specific to this form exists. It should be described as unassessed rather than assigned any inferred status.
