Taxonomy & naming
The species was described by the French naturalist and explorer François Louis de Laporte, comte de Castelnau, in 1855, as Chromys proxima, on material collected during his expedition through South America. The type locality is the Río Ucayali at the Mission of Sarayacu in Peru; the surviving syntypes are held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in Paris (MNHN A-9510 and B-3001, the latter split from the former). Castelnau's generic placement was a slip — the name should have read Chromis — and the species was later folded into Geophagus, the eartheater genus Heckel erected in 1840. For much of the twentieth century proximus had no independent standing: Gosse (1976), a noted lumper, treated it as a junior synonym of the wide-ranging Geophagus surinamensis. It was Ortega & Vari (1986), in their checklist of Peruvian freshwater fishes, and Sven O. Kullander (1986), in his monograph on the cichlids of the Peruvian Amazon, who resurrected proximus as a valid species, Kullander providing a full redescription with diagnosis, distribution and illustration. The fish sits squarely in the so-called surinamensis group of Geophagus — a knot of deep-bodied, flank-spotted species that Kullander's restriction of the genus left as its core. Subsequent authors (López-Fernández & Taphorn 2004; Lucinda et al. 2010; Chuctaya et al. 2022) have kept the name in good standing while continuing to wrestle with the group's internal boundaries. Geophagus itself is placed in the eartheater subfamily Geophaginae (or Geophagini) of the Neotropical Cichlidae. Castelnau never said outright which species he meant when he coined the epithet 'nearest' — Thomas Weidner's monographic review of the genus guesses it may have been the Brazilian eartheater he described in the same paper as Chromys unimaculata (now Geophagus brasiliensis), since the two are directly compared in the original text — but on current evidence the fish's true closest relatives are Geophagus megasema and Geophagus brachybranchus, not brasiliensis. The group is not fully resolved even now: field-collected fish going under the name Geophagus sp. 'Rio Negro I' (also traded as 'Stripetail') are close enough to proximus to be mistaken for it at a glance, differing chiefly in a smaller, lower-set lateral spot, a spotted rather than striped lower tail lobe, and the absence of the orange-red cheek zone diagnostic of true proximus — a reminder that, across a range this large, more than one lineage may currently be travelling under a single name.
Morphology
Geophagus proximus is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with the high, rounded forehead and protrusible, down-turned mouth characteristic of the eartheaters. Size figures depend heavily on how length is reported: FishBase lists a maximum of about 13.5 in total length for a male (and roughly 10.5 in for a female), with a published maximum weight near 562 g, while Seriously Fish gives 8–9 in as standard length — the snout-to-tail-base measure that excludes the caudal fin — so most aquarium and field accounts converge on a fish of roughly 8.5–10 in in everyday terms. Coloration is a warm tan to olive-bronze ground broken by rows of pearly blue-green spots along the flanks and into the unpaired fins, brightening markedly in dominant or breeding individuals. The diagnostic marks of the species, the features that separate it from its near-identical group-mates, are a relatively large, roughly oblong dark blotch set on the mid-flank; a small dark mark on the preopercle (the forward cheek bone); the absence of vertical bars on the sides; and a caudal fin patterned with three to five pale stripes on the upper lobe and a more broken, spotted pattern below. Adults are notably deep-bodied for the genus, and a dark stripe runs along the lower part of the anterior operculum — paired with a warm red-orange zone between the operculum and the lateral spot that helps separate it from Geophagus megasema, a species with a comparably large lateral blotch but no opercular stripe at all. Sexual dimorphism is subtle and unreliable in young fish: mature males average a little larger, carry somewhat longer dorsal and anal fin extensions, and dominant males can develop a fleshy nuchal hump on the forehead, though this hump takes time to show — it is not reliably visible until a fish exceeds roughly 4 in — while a ripe female shows a blunt, protruding ovipositor when spawning.
Habitat
The species is well dispersed through the western and central Amazon. The type locality is the Río Ucayali at the Mission of Sarayacu, Peru, and confirmed Brazilian records run from Alenquer and the Rio Trombetas near Santarém back up the Solimões to the Rio Tefé, Lago Amanã and Lago Janauacá; the Catalog of Fishes also lists it for Bolivia within the upper Amazon system, and no recent Peruvian imports have reached the trade even though it remains the westernmost-ranging member of its group. It is a fish of lowland, slow-to-moderate waters rather than the rapids: it occupies the lower courses of rivers, floodplain lakes in the seasonally inundated várzea, and some permanent blackwater lakes. Reports suggest a preference for clear and black waters over the heavily turbid white waters of the main channel — Weidner's own fieldwork around Santarém specifically weighs against the older idea that proximus is a blackwater specialist — and it favours gently sloping marginal zones along shores and around islands, over bottoms of sand and leaf litter, sometimes with scattered rocks, submerged roots and branches. Despite the wide range, the fish is never reported in numbers: field collectors working the Rio Tefé and the Santarém area could take only single individuals with a cast net even where other Geophagus were clearly more numerous, which fits a naturally low-density, solitary or loosely dispersed existence in the wild rather than the tight aggregations the species can form in an aquarium. These are warm, soft, acidic-to-neutral waters: temperatures around collecting sites typically run 77–84 °F, and the chemistry tolerated in keeping spans roughly pH 4.0–7.0. Because it grubs the marginal shallows and floodplain margins, the fish's working depth band is shallow — on the order of the first couple of metres of the water column over those sloping littoral bottoms — rather than the deep main channel. Across its range it shares these habitats with a large cast of characins, loricariid catfishes, Apistogramma and Crenicichla.
Feeding
Like all true Geophagus, proximus is a sand-sifter — the behaviour that earns the genus its common name, eartheater. It takes mouthfuls of substrate, sorts edible particles in the buccal cavity and mouth-pharyngeal apparatus, and expels the cleaned sand and silt through the gill openings and mouth. FishBase places it low on the food web, with an estimated trophic level near 2.3. The stomach contents of wild fish are dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, plant material such as seeds, organic detritus and ingested sediment — the diet of a benthic micro-invertivore and detritivore rather than a predator. Once settled it will rise readily into the water column to intercept drifting food, but it returns to browsing the bottom between meals. Even as adults these cichlids are poorly equipped to handle large prey items, so in nature they work through a steady intake of fine material rather than taking occasional big meals. In the floodplain community they function as part of the guild of sediment-processing fishes that turn over the soft littoral substrates.
Mating
Outside of breeding, Geophagus proximus is gregarious and surprisingly peaceful, living in loose aggregations with a clear dominance hierarchy; juveniles in particular shoal tightly. Reproduction is preceded by pair formation out of the group, and because the sexes cannot be told apart reliably by eye, pairs sort themselves out from a cohort of fish grown up together rather than being assembled by the keeper. Courtship is relatively understated for a cichlid — fin-flaring, mutual circling, gaping and head-jerking displays — after which a forming pair selects and cleans a spawning site and defends the immediate area against intruders. The species is among the smaller, less belligerent members of its group; in mixed company a spawning pair of proximus has been observed to dominate and harass larger, more nervous tankmates such as Satanoperca, monopolising food while shepherding young. Pair bonds do not appear to last beyond a single brood: once a batch of young has been raised, each former partner typically seeks a new mate for the next spawning rather than re-pairing, a pattern that spreads the genetic contribution of the group more evenly across generations. The social temperature rises sharply around a brood, then subsides again as the fish return to their aggregations.
Breeding
Geophagus proximus is an ovophilous (immediate) biparental mouthbrooder — a reproductive mode that, within the eartheaters, is derived from ancestral open substrate-brooding and has arisen more than once across the genus. Spawning itself follows the substrate-spawner script: the pair clean a site, typically a flat rock, a piece of driftwood or simply the tank bottom, and the female lays one or more rows of adhesive eggs that the male fertilises, the sequence repeated over several hours. A full brood runs to around 200 eggs. Rather than guarding the clutch in the open, however, the eggs are soon taken up into the mouth — usually by the female, occasionally by both parents from the outset — where they are incubated. The parents trade brood-care duties: a common pattern has the female holding while the male defends the surrounding territory, with care becoming increasingly shared once the fry are mobile. At about 77–82 °F the young become free-swimming roughly 8–11 days after spawning and are released to forage in cautious, lengthening excursions, bolting back into a parent's mouth at any alarm — a rapid flick of the ventral fins appears to serve as the recall signal. As the fry grow, the duration each parent is willing to brood declines: keepers report that females in particular tire of taking the young back after the first days, so that over a brood active mouthbrooding shifts increasingly onto the male. The free-swimming fry are easily raised on powdered dry foods, Artemia nauplii and microworm. No special trigger seems necessary beyond good condition; a rich diet and a stringent water-change regime are the practical keys.
In the aquarium
Geophagus proximus is a rewarding but demanding aquarium fish, best regarded as intermediate rather than beginner-level — largely because of its sensitivity to water quality rather than any difficulty in feeding or temperament. Given that adults approach 8.5–10 in and the species is gregarious, it needs space: a tank with a base of at least roughly 180 × 23.5 in (around 600+ litres) is the realistic minimum for a proper group, and bigger is better. The single most important furnishing is a deep bed of soft, fine sand. Coarse gravel or pebbles defeat the fish's whole feeding mode, can be ingested with risk of internal blockage, and may abrade the gill filaments through which sand is normally expelled; sand is non-negotiable. Décor is otherwise a matter of taste — dim lighting, driftwood and scattered roots suit the species well — though heavy leaf litter is best avoided because the constant sifting throws partially decomposed material into suspension and clogs filters. A flattish water-worn rock or two can be offered as potential spawning sites.
Water management is where this fish is won or lost, if in a somewhat more forgiving way than several of its relatives. Geophagus proximus tolerates a hardness under about 20° dGH and a pH below 8.0 for ordinary maintenance and even breeding, and it copes with a heavier load of nitrogenous waste than most other geophagines — but 'more tolerant' is not the same as indifferent, and softer, more acid water reliably brings out better colour and higher activity, so the working rule remains the lower the better. Chronic poor maintenance still shows up as head-and-lateral-line erosion and stunted growth. The proven approach is to over-filter with canister filters and/or a sump and to carry out large weekly water changes of 50–70 percent. Strong current should be avoided — these are fish of calm floodplain margins — so filter returns are best positioned to circulate without creating fast flow, and mechanical media should be set up to capture the fine sand and silt the fish stir up. Maintenance temperature sits around 79–86 °F within the tolerated 75–90 °F band; pH is best kept on the soft, gently acidic-to-neutral side, with soft to moderately hard water all acceptable.
Feeding is straightforward. Offer several small portions a day rather than one large feed, built around fine-grade prepared foods plus small live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Tubifex and mosquito larvae, with a meaningful proportion of vegetable matter such as Spirulina. The fish are unable to manage large chunks even as adults, so keep particle size small.
Socially, the species is peaceful outside of breeding and will not trouble any tankmate too large to swallow — suitable companions are the many medium peaceful South Americans that share its water preferences, while aggressive or hard-water substrate-dwellers are best avoided. It should be kept as a group of five to eight; in smaller numbers a dominant individual tends to bully the weakest, or the group simply fails to settle and behaves nervously. Some aquarists house Geophagus with Potamotrygon stingrays, which often works but occasionally ends with the cichlids vanishing overnight. The most practical caution for keepers, though, is one of identity rather than husbandry: proximus is genuinely uncommon in the trade, and its name is freely attached to shipments of other surinamensis-group eartheaters, so a fish sold under this label — or under "Geophagus surinamensis," which is almost never actually exported — frequently turns out to be something else. Buying with locality data is the surest guard against confusion.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus proximus as Least Concern (assessed 30 November 2020 by R.G. Frederico, published 2023). The rating reflects a wide distribution through the western and central Amazon and no evidence of a population-level decline; the species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is regarded as harmless to humans. It is taken in minor commercial and ornamental fisheries but at a level the assessment does not flag as a threat. As a widespread, adaptable floodplain generalist it is far less exposed than the basin's many narrow-range endemics. The broader backdrop, however, is the accelerating pressure on Amazonian fresh waters — dam construction, deforestation, mining and its mercury burden, overfishing and the disruption of the seasonal flood pulse — none of which is documented as a specific danger to this particular eartheater, but which frames the long-term outlook for the lowland habitats it depends on.
