Taxonomy & naming
George Albert Boulenger described this cichlid in 1897 (in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London volume dated 1896) from material collected in the Upper Shiré River — the river draining Lake Malawi — by Dr Percy Rendall and presented to the British Museum by Sir Harry H. Johnston. He hesitantly placed it in the catch-all genus Paratilapia but at the same time erected the new genus Docimodus for it, making Docimodus johnstoni the type species by monotypy. The two surviving syntypes are held at the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1896.10.25.29–30). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists it as valid as Docimodus johnstoni Boulenger, 1897, in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae.
For nearly eighty years Docimodus was monotypic. Eccles and Lewis added a second species, Docimodus evelynae, in 1976, and their revision of the genus established the pair we recognise today — two large, oblique-banded haplochromines built around removing tissue from other fish. The genus name combines Greek roots usually read as a reference to the fish's tested, robust teeth; the species epithet honours Johnston, whose name is also attached to a completely unrelated Malawi killifish (Micropanchax johnstoni), so the two should not be confused. Docimodus sits among the larger, predatory haplochromines of Malawi rather than with the rock-grazing mbuna, and its exact relationships within the flock remain unsettled — the unusual feeding apparatus may be a case of convergence rather than a clear signpost to its closest relatives.
Morphology
Docimodus johnstoni is a large, robust haplochromine. FishBase records a maximum of about 10 in total length, making it one of the bigger members of the Malawi flock and considerably larger than the mbuna it shares the lake with. The body is deep and powerfully built, and the defining feature is the head: a massive, prognathous lower jaw set with robust teeth, the toolkit of a fish that grips and tears tissue rather than one that picks at algae or sucks in plankton.
The colour pattern is comparatively plain — a pale to brownish-grey ground crossed by a dark oblique band that runs back and down across the flank, the same slanting bar seen in its congener Docimodus evelynae and in a handful of other large Malawi predators. That band, the heavy jaw and the sheer size together make an adult hard to mistake for anything else in the lake. As in essentially all Malawi haplochromines, breeding males intensify in colour and carry egg-spot ocelli on the anal fin, while females and non-territorial males stay drabber; the species is not kept widely enough for the trade to have catalogued the fine points of its dimorphism the way it has for show fish like the eyebiter.
Habitat
Docimodus johnstoni is endemic to the Lake Malawi system. Its range, as given by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase, covers Lake Malawi proper, the smaller downstream Lake Malombe, and the upper Shiré River that links them — a distribution shared across Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, the three countries the lake borders. The original specimens came from the Upper Shiré, which remains the type locality.
This is a fish of open, sediment bottoms rather than the rock faces favoured by mbuna. FishBase describes it living over sandy and muddy substrates, and the benthopelagic habit fits a predator that ranges along the bottom in search of larger fish to harass. Documented collection points trace its presence the length of the western shore — from Karonga in the far north, through Nkhata Bay and Nkhotakota, down to Salima and the lake's south-west arm — confirming a genuinely lake-wide animal rather than a localised one. Like the rest of the Malawi fauna it lives in hard, alkaline water: pH well above neutral, typically in the high 7s to high 8s, at warm tropical temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F, the rift-lake chemistry that any captive Malawi cichlid needs.
Feeding
This is where Docimodus earns its reputation. Examination of stomach contents, reported in Eccles and Lewis's revision of the genus, showed that Docimodus johnstoni feeds chiefly on the fins of clariid catfishes — the air-breathing Bathyclarias and Clarias catfish that share its soft-bottom habitat — while its congener Docimodus evelynae specialises instead on the flank scales of cichlids. FishBase places Docimodus johnstoni at a high trophic level of about 4.2, the figure expected of an animal eating other vertebrates, and the heavy prognathous jaw and robust teeth are the mechanical answer to gripping a much larger catfish and shearing off pieces of its fins.
Lepidophagy (scale-eating) and pterygophagy (fin-eating) are among the rarest feeding strategies in fishes, and Lake Malawi is one of the few places on Earth where a flock has thrown up specialists in both. The strategy is a kind of grazing parasitism: the catfish is not killed, it is wounded, and the fins regrow, so a single prey animal can be cropped repeatedly. It is a niche that demands stealth and a powerful, precise bite rather than the speed of a pursuit predator, which suits the genus's stout, unhurried build.
Mating
Docimodus johnstoni has not been studied in the wild with anything like the attention paid to the lake's showier cichlids, so its courtship is described mainly by analogy to the rest of the Malawi haplochromine flock — a group whose breeding behaviour is remarkably uniform. These are polygynous, non-pair-bonding fish: a dominant male intensifies his colours, takes up a patch of bottom, and displays to ripe females with quivering and circling, while subordinate males and females stay drab and are tolerated only at the territory's edge.
With a predator this large and uncommon, the practical observations that exist come from its sheer scarcity in collections rather than from breeding accounts. What can be said with confidence is that, like its relatives, it is a maternal mouthbrooder in which the male's role ends at fertilisation — there is no lasting pair and no shared parental care.
Breeding
Docimodus johnstoni is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder, the reproductive mode shared by essentially the entire Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation. Spawning follows the classic Malawi pattern: the female lays a small clutch on the substrate, immediately takes the eggs into her mouth, and is induced to draw in the male's milt — typically by mouthing the egg-spot ocelli on his anal fin — so that fertilisation happens inside her buccal cavity. She then carries and oxygenates the developing eggs and fry in her mouth for several weeks, not feeding while she broods, before releasing free-swimming young.
Beyond that general framework, hard numbers for this species — clutch size, brooding duration, fry size at release — are not well documented in the literature, a direct consequence of how rarely it is collected or kept. FishBase's reproduction record flags it as a batch (serial) spawner, consistent with the staggered, repeated spawning seen across the maternal mouthbrooders of the lake.
In the aquarium
Docimodus johnstoni is, frankly, a fish almost nobody keeps, and that scarcity is the single most honest thing to say about it in an aquarium context. It rarely enters the trade, it grows to around 10 in, and its natural diet — biting the fins off catfish — makes it a problematic tankmate by design. Any keeper who acquires one should treat it as a specialist's predator: a long tank measured in feet rather than gallons-on-paper, a sand bottom that matches its soft-substrate habitat, hard and alkaline Malawi water (pH comfortably above 7.5, roughly 75–82 °F / 75–82 °F), and careful thought about company.
The obvious risk is that a wild fin-biter will harass tankmates, and the usual advice for the rarer Malawi predators applies: give it size-matched, robust companions and watch for fin damage, since the behaviour that defines it in the lake does not switch off in glass. In practice it should take meaty prepared and frozen foods in captivity, as scale- and fin-eaters generally adapt to substitute diets, but it is not a community fish and not a beginner's animal. It belongs with hobbyists specifically interested in the strange feeding guilds of Lake Malawi rather than in a general rift-lake display.
Conservation
Docimodus johnstoni was assessed for the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (assessment dated 2018) as part of the comprehensive Red List evaluation of the Lake Malawi / Niassa / Nyasa catchment. The reasoning is the standard one for a widespread, lake-wide endemic with no specific threat acting on it: the species occurs the length of the lake, into Lake Malombe and the upper Shiré, and is not targeted by fisheries or the aquarium trade in numbers that would endanger it. It is naturally uncommon — a specialised top-of-chain feeder is never abundant — but uncommon is not the same as threatened.
That clean assessment belongs to the species, not to its lake. The Lake Malawi catchment is under real and documented strain: over-fishing and the collapse of the chambo tilapia fishery, heavy sediment and nutrient loading from deforested shorelines, measurable warming of the surface layer that strengthens stratification and trims productivity, and a growing invasive-species risk. Docimodus johnstoni sits near the top of a local food web — it depends on healthy populations of the clariid catfish it crops, which in turn depend on the wider productivity of a soft-bottomed lake. A fish this specialised, and this rare to begin with, has little slack if the system that feeds it keeps degrading, even though no one is fishing it off the bottom today.
