Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Sexual dichromatism is expected, as breeding males across predatory Malawi hap genera typically intensify their pattern relative to females, though a species-specific description of that breeding dress has not been documented here.

Habitat

This species is documented from a spread of localities running much of the length of Lake Malawi, from Cape Kaiser in the north through Likoma Island and Londo Bay, down to Mbenji Island, Nakantenga Island and Namalenje Island further south. This broad distribution is consistent with a predatory species ranging over intermediate and sand-rock transition habitat rather than being confined to a single reef. Within that habitat S. modestus specifically favours dark recesses in the rocky biotope, hiding among rocks where its dark brown coloration blends with the surroundings — a lifestyle that contrasts with the Makokola population, which Konings observed hunting in the open over rock and sand rather than sheltering in crevices. The water across this range is Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline medium, and predatory haps of this genus are typically found at moderate depths near rock or rubble cover that supports ambush hunting.

Where kept, its needs would follow the general template for a moderate-to-large predatory Malawi hap, sized for an adult that can reach 10 in: a spacious aquarium with a sand or fine-gravel substrate, and — reflecting its wild habit of hiding in dark rocky recesses rather than patrolling in the open — rockwork built with genuine cave-like crevices and overhangs rather than just cover in the general sense, without crowding the open floor space these fish also need to hunt. Water chemistry should match the lake — hard and strongly alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. Its documented wild diet is small mbuna taken by ambush, so a captive diet of appropriately sized meaty foods is well supported, and any mbuna-sized tankmates should be regarded as potential prey rather than safe company. Given the limited documentation available, any care regimen should be treated as provisional and based on genus-level analogy and Konings' field observations rather than confirmed aquarium data for this species.

Conservation

Stigmatochromis modestus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status can be reported here. Its documented range spans a considerable stretch of Lake Malawi from the northern to the southern lake, suggesting a broader distribution than the most narrowly restricted rock-reef mbuna, though this is an inference from locality records rather than a formal range assessment. Like other predatory Lake Malawi haps it is exposed to pressures including fishing, shoreline disturbance, and the broader basin-wide stresses of sedimentation, nutrient loading and climate-driven changes to lake mixing and productivity.
