Geophagus obscurus is an eartheater of the Rio Paraguaçu in Bahia, north-eastern Brazil — one of the oldest names in the eastern-Brazilian eartheater fauna, coined by the French naturalist Castelnau in 1855 and then 'obscured' for a century and a half as a forgotten synonym of the pearl cichlid before being resurrected as a valid species. A substrate-sifting biparental brooder of the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis group, it shares its single drainage with the much younger-named Geophagus diamantinensis and, like most of that lineage, remains poorly known in life.

Taxonomy & naming

Geophagus obscurus traces to the French naturalist François Louis de Laporte, comte de Castelnau, who described it in 1855 as Chromys obscura on syntypes from the Rio Paraguaçu, Bahia (held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, MNHN A-9511), during his great expedition through central South America. The specific name obscurus is Latin for 'dark' or 'obscure,' presumably for the fish's dusky colouration — though the name turned out to be doubly apt, because for most of the next 150 years it was indeed obscured, treated as a synonym or junior name of the widespread pearl cichlid 'Geophagus' brasiliensis. Revisionary work on the eastern-Brazilian eartheaters resurrected it: it has been recognised as valid since the early 2000s, with the combination fixed by Lucena and Kullander's treatment of the Paraguaçu fauna, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now lists it as valid as Geophagus obscurus (Castelnau 1855), the parentheses marking its transfer out of the original genus Chromys. FishBase and the Catalogue of Life follow. It belongs to the 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species group, the eastern-Brazilian pearl-cichlid lineage that is morphologically and genetically distinct from the true Amazonian-Guianan eartheaters and is widely expected to be split into its own genus (hence the frequent 'Geophagus' in quotation marks). The molecular study of Mattos & Costa (2018) recovers obscurus in a basal clade of the group endemic to the Rio Paraguaçu basin, paired with the more recently described Geophagus diamantinensis.

Morphology

Geophagus obscurus is a small-to-medium eartheater; FishBase gives a maximum of about 4 in in standard length. It has the brasiliensis-group form — a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, a fairly steep frontal profile and the small, low, protrusible mouth of a dedicated substrate-sifter — together with the genus-typical dark mid-lateral blotch. The species name records its general aspect: a comparatively dark, dusky fish, its olive-to-grey ground less brightly spangled than some of its relatives, though it still carries the group's pale iridescent spotting and streaking on flanks, cheeks, operculum and unpaired fins. Castelnau's original account was brief by modern standards, and obscurus has been re-diagnosed against the other Paraguaçu and brasiliensis-group eartheaters chiefly on meristics, body proportions and the details of its (relatively subdued) colour pattern rather than on any single conspicuous feature. As in the rest of the group, sexual dimorphism is moderate: males grow larger and may show a fuller forehead and marginally extended fin tips, with the sexes hardest to separate outside breeding condition.

Habitat

Geophagus obscurus is endemic to the Rio Paraguaçu basin of Bahia, north-eastern Brazil, occupying chiefly the lower and middle, coastal section of the drainage — complementing its basin relative Geophagus diamantinensis, which holds the upper headwaters in the Chapada Diamantina. The Paraguaçu rises in the Chapada Diamantina highlands and runs roughly 311 mi east through a semiarid interior to the Atlantic at Todos os Santos Bay near Cachoeira and Maragogipe. The reaches obscurus occupies are warmer lowland and mid-basin waters over sand, mud and gravel; the river is strongly seasonal, swelling in the wet season and contracting in the dry. It is a benthopelagic freshwater fish of warm tropical waters. No specific published temperature or chemistry envelope exists for the species, but the lower-to-middle Paraguaçu regime is warm, variably turbid, and ranges from soft to moderately hard depending on the catchment geology — the sort of sand- and mud-bottomed lowland river its sifting habit exploits. Its restriction to this single basin reflects the basin-by-basin endemism that pervades the brasiliensis complex along eastern Brazil.

Feeding

Geophagus obscurus feeds as its genus name promises — it is a substrate-sifter. The fish takes mouthfuls of sand and fine sediment from the river bed, sorts edible invertebrates, detritus and organic particles from the inorganic grit over its gill rakers, and expels the cleaned substrate through mouth and gills. The brasiliensis-group eartheaters are abundant sand-sifting fishes whose diet runs to benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — together with seeds, plant fragments and a substantial fraction of detritus, making them invertivore-detritivores low on the food web. There is no diet study specific to obscurus, but its mouth and gill-raker morphology and its group membership leave no doubt that it works the sand and mud of the Paraguaçu in the same winnowing manner.

Mating

The 'Geophagus' brasiliensis species group are biparental substrate spawners and guarders rather than mouthbrooders — the reproductive mode that separates them from the Amazonian-Guianan true eartheaters and from the Andean-Panamanian maternal mouthbrooders. The reproductive biology of obscurus specifically has not been observed and is inferred from this well-documented group. A male and female form a pair, clean a spawning surface — a flat stone or firm patch of substrate — and defend a territory around it together, with the usual cichlid courtship of lateral displays, fin-spreading and joint substrate-cleaning. The eggs are laid and tended in the open, with both parents sharing care and defence; there is no oral incubation. This robust, conventional biparental substrate-spawning is the reproductive hallmark of the group and a large part of why its best-known member, the pearl cichlid, is so adaptable and prolific.

Breeding

No captive or wild breeding account exists specifically for Geophagus obscurus; what follows is the group pattern, exemplified by the pearl cichlid. The pair lays a clutch of adhesive eggs on a cleaned hard surface and tends them biparentally — the female fanning and directly caring for the eggs, the male defending the perimeter. After hatching, the wrigglers are commonly moved to one or more pre-dug pits, and once free-swimming the fry are herded and guarded as a school by both parents, which defend them tenaciously, sometimes with marked aggression. Brasiliensis-group cichlids produce sizeable broods relative to the mouthbrooding eartheaters, and obscurus, as a small-to-medium member, presumably falls toward the lower end of that range, though no clutch counts have been published for it. In a strongly seasonal river like the Paraguaçu, spawning very likely tracks the onset of the rains, when the river fills and feeding conditions improve, as it does in related coastal-basin cichlids, with the group's extended biparental care continuing well past hatching.

In the aquarium

Geophagus obscurus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby. Long hidden inside the concept of the pearl cichlid and only relatively recently resurrected as a valid species, it is not exported from its Bahian river and has no established body of aquarist breeding reports. The brasiliensis-group eartheater that hobbyists actually keep is the hardy, near-ubiquitous pearl cichlid, and any husbandry guidance for obscurus is extrapolated from it.

That extrapolation is reasonably safe, because the group is among the most undemanding of eartheaters. A keeper would provide a spacious tank with a deep bed of fine, soft sand — these are substrate-sifters, and gravel both frustrates feeding and risks gill abrasion — with scattered stones, driftwood and open foraging space. Reflecting the warm, seasonally variable lower Paraguaçu, water around 75–82 °F of soft to moderate hardness suits it; the group tolerates a wide range, so clean, stable, well-filtered conditions matter more than precise targets, and a fish that constantly stirs the substrate rewards strong mechanical filtration and regular water changes. Feeding is straightforward — sinking pellets and frozen or live invertebrates taken off the bottom match the natural invertivore-detritivore diet. The main caution, as with the whole group, is temperament: brasiliensis-group cichlids can become decidedly territorial and pugnacious when breeding, so even this modest, dusky species would want room and robust, similarly sized tankmates rather than delicate companions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Geophagus obscurus as Data Deficient (last assessed 7 November 2018) — too little is known of its distribution, abundance and population trend to judge its status. As with its basin-mate Geophagus diamantinensis, that label carries genuine concern for a single-drainage endemic of a semiarid, water-stressed river in the Brazilian northeast. The Paraguaçu basin faces water abstraction and damming (including major reservoirs that have altered its flow), agricultural and urban pollution, deforestation and sedimentation, and the intensifying droughts of a drying regional climate — pressures that weigh heavily on fishes restricted to a single seasonal river system. The long historical confusion of obscurus with the widespread pearl cichlid means its true range and population have been chronically under-recorded, which is part of why it remains Data Deficient. A targeted survey of its distribution and status within the Paraguaçu would be the obvious next step. The species has no CITES listing and no commercial or ornamental significance.
