Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis fusiformis was described in 1969 by the British ichthyologist Peter Humphry Greenwood and J.M. Gee, in Part VII of Greenwood's monumental multi-part revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis (Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Zoology). The type locality is the Buvuma Channel, west of Nienda and Vuga Island, in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria. The specific epithet fusiformis — 'spindle-shaped' — captures the elongate, tapering body that distinguishes it from the deeper-bodied members of the flock.
The genus placement is genuinely unsettled, and that uncertainty is worth stating plainly. In 1980 Greenwood erected the genus Yssichromis for a group of slender, large-eyed, open-water zooplanktivores, and most modern ichthyological literature — including Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes — treats this fish as Yssichromis fusiformis. FishBase, however, follows Van Oijen et al. (1996) in retaining all the lacustrine and riverine haplochromines of the Lake Victoria catchment in the catch-all genus Haplochromis Hilgendorf, 1888, pending a complete modern revision of the flock. The Lake Victoria haplochromines are a textbook adaptive radiation of several hundred closely related, recently diverged species, and their generic boundaries remain a matter of active debate; we keep the Haplochromis heading here while noting that 'Yssichromis fusiformis' is the name a reader will encounter in much of the technical work on these zooplanktivores.
Morphology
This is a small cichlid: FishBase records a maximum of about 4.5 in standard length, and most individuals are smaller. The body is elongate and laterally compressed — the 'spindle' shape of the name — a build typical of the open-water, zooplankton-feeding guild of the Victoria flock, in which a streamlined form and relatively large eyes suit a life of pursuing small drifting prey in midwater. As in essentially all Lake Victoria haplochromines, breeding males are the colourful sex, developing bright nuptial coloration and bearing the egg-spot ('ocelli') markings on the anal fin that play a role in spawning, while females and non-breeding individuals are a plainer silvery-grey. Beyond these general features, fine morphometric and meristic detail rests in Greenwood and Gee's original description; published colour photographs of living wild fish are scarce, in part because the species is small, offshore and was severely reduced in the lake for years.
Habitat
Haplochromis fusiformis is endemic to Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake in the world, shared by Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Within the lake it is an offshore, pelagic-to-benthopelagic fish rather than a shoreline or rocky-reef dweller: FishBase gives a depth range of about 89–108 ft, and both FishBase and the IUCN describe it as occurring in off-shore areas over a mud (soft sediment) substrate. Lake Victoria is a warm, relatively shallow and turbid soft-water lake; surface waters typically run around 73–81 °F and circum-neutral to alkaline, with pH commonly in the range of about 7.2 to 9.0. A defining feature of the lake's recent history is eutrophication: increased nutrient loading since the mid-twentieth century has reduced water clarity and expanded zones of deep-water oxygen depletion, which has compressed the habitat available to deeper-living offshore species like this one. Because the fish lives over open mud in the water column rather than at a fixed structure, its distribution tracks the seasonal and depth-related availability of oxygenated, food-rich water.
Feeding
Haplochromis fusiformis is a zooplanktivore — the trophic role under which the IUCN explicitly classifies it, and the guild for which Greenwood's Yssichromis was named. Offshore zooplanktivorous haplochromines of Lake Victoria feed primarily on the lake's pelagic crustacean zooplankton (cladocerans such as Daphnia, and copepods) taken in midwater. Detailed diel feeding studies on close relatives in this guild (for example Haplochromis/Yssichromis argens) found that, before the lake's ecological upheaval, the diet was dominated by zooplankton taken during the day, with the phantom-midge larvae Chaoborus becoming important at night as those larvae migrated up the water column. An older FishBase note citing 'insects' for fusiformis is best read against this zooplankton-plus-insect-larvae picture rather than as evidence of a different diet. Crucially, the resurgent zooplanktivores of the lake have been shown to have shifted their diets following the ecosystem changes of recent decades, so the present-day diet of fusiformis specifically should be treated as not precisely documented.
Mating
No courtship or social behaviour has been described specifically for Haplochromis fusiformis, so what follows is the well-established pattern for Lake Victoria haplochromines generally rather than direct observation of this species. These cichlids are polygynous and are not pair-bonding: there is no lasting bond and no biparental care. Breeding males develop conspicuous nuptial coloration and court females actively, displaying the anal-fin egg-spots that are central to spawning in the group. Spawning is brief; the male's role ends at fertilisation, after which the female alone takes on all parental duties. In the open-water guild to which fusiformis belongs, males presumably display in the water column rather than over fixed territories on a reef, but the particulars for this species are unrecorded.
Breeding
Haplochromis fusiformis is a maternal (female) mouthbrooder, as FishBase confirms ('mouthbrooding by females') and as is the rule across the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. After spawning, the female picks the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there through hatching and the early larval stage, releasing free-swimming fry only once they are reasonably developed; she does not feed normally while carrying. Species-specific figures for clutch size, brooding duration and fry development have not been published for fusiformis. By the standard of small Lake Victoria haplochromines, broods are modest — typically on the order of a few tens of eggs (commonly reported in the range of roughly 20–60 for small members of the flock), reflecting the trade-off mouthbrooders make between fecundity and the protection of a small number of large, well-provisioned young. Spawning is thought to be possible year-round in the warm, aseasonal lake. This reproductive mode — small clutches of carefully guarded young — is part of why the flock's species are individually slow to rebuild numbers once a population has crashed.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis fusiformis is essentially not an aquarium fish. It is a small, offshore, plankton-feeding endemic that was never a meaningful part of the ornamental trade, and after the Lake Victoria upheaval it has been scarce even in scientific sampling; it is not a species a hobbyist will find offered for sale. The Lake Victoria cichlids that are kept and bred in the hobby are mostly the more colourful rock-dwelling 'Victorian haps,' often maintained today as conservation-minded captive populations, and the husbandry that applies to those fish is the closest available reference point for this one.
For anyone keeping Lake Victoria haplochromines in general, the principles are well understood: hard, alkaline water around pH 7.5–8.5 and temperatures of roughly 75–81 °F; a long tank with open swimming room rather than a heavily decorated nano; and careful management of the intense male aggression typical of the group, usually by keeping one male with several females or by crowding to diffuse aggression. As a zooplankton-feeder, a fish like fusiformis would need small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, cyclops, brine shrimp, finely crushed flake) rather than the algae-based diet appropriate to the lake's grazers. None of this should be read as a recommendation to seek the species out; it is offered to be honest about what keeping it would involve, given that in practice it is a wild, threatened fish best left to in-situ conservation and research.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis fusiformis as Vulnerable (criterion D2), assessed on 1 April 2010 by Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks, with the population trend recorded as unknown. The assessment describes the species as a pelagic zooplanktivore found offshore over mud, and lists the pressures bearing on it: introduced and problematic species, fishing and harvesting, and pollution from domestic and urban waste water, industrial and military effluents, and agricultural and forestry run-off. These are the symptoms of the two great disturbances that reshaped Lake Victoria in the late twentieth century. The deliberate introduction and explosive 1980s boom of the Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large predator, coincided with widespread eutrophication of the lake; together they are implicated in the loss or severe decline of a large fraction of the lake's endemic haplochromine flock — one of the most dramatic vertebrate biodiversity losses on record. There is, however, a partial recovery to set against this: after Nile perch stocks were themselves reduced by heavy fishing, a number of zooplanktivorous haplochromines staged a resurgence from the 1990s onward, and by the mid-2000s the zooplanktivorous guild had become a dominant offshore trophic group again — in places more abundant than before the perturbation, though often with altered diets and morphology. Whether and how strongly fusiformis specifically shares in that recovery is not well documented, which is consistent with its Vulnerable listing and unknown population trend.
