Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Victoria — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Hybridization watchi

Haplochromis pellegrini is a small, little-known haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Victoria, the great East African lake shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Described by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 from Entebbe on the Ugandan shore, it is a slender inshore predator of sandy beaches near weed beds and, like the rest of its vast species flock, a maternal mouthbrooder. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known of a fish caught up in the lake's catastrophic late-20th-century ecological upheaval.

Taxonomy & naming

Haplochromis pellegrini was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922, in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, as part of his early attempt to bring order to the bewildering swarm of small cichlids in Lake Victoria. The type locality is Entebbe, on the northern Ugandan shore of the lake. Regan's account rested on a handful of specimens in the British Museum (Natural History) and in the Paris Museum; the lectotype (BMNH 1906.5.30.253) was later fixed by Peter Humphry Greenwood in 1962, with a paralectotype (BMNH 1906.5.30.254) from the same collection. Greenwood redescribed the species in the same 1962 paper — part of his monumental multi-decade revision of the Lake Victoria Haplochromis — noting that Regan's original description had been thin and based on very few fish.

The species belongs to the enormous Lake Victoria haplochromine radiation, a flock of several hundred closely related, recently evolved species. Generic placement in this group is famously unsettled: many of these fishes have at various times been split into segregate genera (Astatotilapia, Yssichromis, Prognathochromis, Harpagochromis and others) on the basis of trophic specialisation, but the conservative and most widely used practice — followed here — is to keep them all under the umbrella genus Haplochromis. The closely similar Haplochromis pseudopellegrini was described by Greenwood in 1967 precisely because it superficially resembles pellegrini; the epithet means 'false pellegrini,' a reminder of how finely divided this flock is. The species honours the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin (1873–1944) of the Paris Museum, who, in Regan's words, had 'kindly' sent notes on two or three specimens about which Regan had some doubts.

Morphology

Haplochromis pellegrini is a small cichlid: the largest examined specimen measured about 4 in in standard length, and most are smaller, putting it among the more modestly sized members of the Victoria flock. Like many inshore haplochromines it has the generalised, moderately elongate haplochromine body — a fish built for manoeuvring among sand and plant stems rather than for sustained open-water cruising or deep-bodied rock grazing. Detailed live coloration for this species is poorly documented in the accessible literature; as in essentially all haplochromines the sexes differ markedly, with breeding males assuming bright nuptial colours and bearing the characteristic yellow or orange 'egg-spots' (ocelli) on the anal fin, while females and non-breeding fish are a comparatively drab silvery-grey to brownish. The dentition and jaw form are those of a small predator rather than a scraper or crusher. Beyond size and the broad haplochromine bauplan, firm species-specific diagnostic detail is scarce — a reflection of how thinly this particular member of the flock has been studied since Greenwood's mid-century revisions.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Victoria, the largest of the African Great Lakes, and within it has been recorded from the Ugandan waters surveyed by Greenwood. It is an inshore, benthopelagic fish: FishBase records it from relatively exposed sandy beaches close to dense stands of submerged and emergent aquatic plants — a marginal, shallow-water zone where open sand meets weed beds rather than deep or rocky habitat. No precise depth range has been published; the IUCN assessment lists both the upper and lower depth limits as unknown, and the fish is best described simply as a shallow-shoreline species. Lake Victoria as a whole is warm, well-oxygenated near the surface and chemically moderate — broadly neutral to alkaline with pH typically in the high-7s to around 9 and surface temperatures usually in the mid-20s Celsius — and Haplochromis pellegrini's sandy-beach niche sits squarely within that envelope. Specific in-situ chemistry measured at its collecting sites does not appear in the published record.

Feeding

Haplochromis pellegrini is a small predator. Examination of preserved stomachs reported in the literature (via FishBase) found an unidentifiable organic sludge together with insect remains, mayfly (Ephemeroptera) pupae and dipteran (midge and fly) larvae, and — tellingly — post-larval fish, fragmentary but identifiable as cichlids. The IUCN assessment classifies the species outright as a piscivore (sensu stricto). Taken together, the picture is of an opportunistic inshore carnivore that takes both aquatic insects and small fish, including the fry and juveniles of other haplochromines, from the sand-and-weed margin. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.5, consistent with a mixed insectivore-piscivore rather than a pure fish specialist. Predation on the young of its own crowded species flock is an ecologically important habit in Lake Victoria, where many small haplochromines partition the food base finely and where juvenile cichlids are an abundant resource in the inshore zone.

Mating

No courtship or social behaviour has been described specifically for Haplochromis pellegrini, and the account here is drawn from what is well established for the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock to which it belongs. These cichlids are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders with no lasting pair bond. Breeding males establish and defend small temporary territories, often on or near the sandy substrate, and develop intense nuptial coloration used to court passing females; the bright anal-fin egg-spots play a central role in spawning. A female ready to spawn is led through a circling courtship, lays a small clutch, and immediately takes the eggs into her mouth — at which point the visual signal of the male's egg-spots prompts her to mouth at his vent and take up his milt, fertilising the clutch she already holds. Because mate choice in these fish is overwhelmingly visual, clear water is essential to the whole system, a point that bears directly on the species' conservation.

Breeding

Like all members of the Lake Victoria flock, Haplochromis pellegrini is a maternal (female-only) mouthbrooder. No clutch count, brooding duration or fry data have been published for this particular species, but the genus-typical pattern is well documented: females of small haplochromines of this size carry comparatively modest clutches — broadly on the order of a few dozen eggs (roughly 20–60 in similar-sized congeners) — incubating the fertilised eggs and then the developing larvae in the buccal cavity for around three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. The female does not feed while brooding. After release the young may shelter briefly in the mother's mouth when threatened, but there is no biparental or substrate care; the male contributes nothing beyond fertilisation. The species has no documented spawning seasonality of its own, and in Lake Victoria such inshore mouthbrooders typically breed more or less year-round in warm, stable shoreline water.

In the aquarium

Haplochromis pellegrini is essentially not an aquarium fish. It has no established presence in the hobby or the ornamental trade, no common name, and is known almost entirely from museum material and scientific survey collections; a hobbyist is far more likely to encounter the better-known, brightly coloured rock-dwelling haplochromines of Lake Victoria (the so-called 'Victorian cichlids' that conservation breeding programmes have popularised) than this obscure sand-beach predator.

Were it ever maintained, its needs would mirror those of other small Lake Victoria haplochromines, which are themselves moderately demanding. That means hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 7.5–8.5, the upper part of the range it experiences in the lake) at about 75–81 °F, in a tank large enough — on the order of a 47 in / four-foot aquarium or more — to spread out the relentless aggression these polygynous mouthbrooders show. A sandy substrate with open swimming space and some plant or rock cover at the margins would suit its natural beach-edge habitat. Because it is a confirmed predator that eats small fish, it could not be trusted with tankmates small enough to swallow, including the fry of its own kind; a varied carnivore diet of frozen and live invertebrates with some small fish or prepared meaty foods would be appropriate. The standard haplochromine caution applies in spades: keep one male with several females to diffuse male aggression, and expect vigorous territorial behaviour during spawning. In practice, though, this remains a fish of the lake and the museum drawer, not the home aquarium.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis pellegrini as Data Deficient (assessed 31 March 2010 by F. Witte and M.P. de Zeeuw, published 2010), meaning there is too little information on its distribution, population and ecology to judge its extinction risk. It is treated as endemic to Lake Victoria, recorded from Ugandan waters; it is fished incidentally but not specifically targeted. The chief threat the assessors flag is insidious rather than direct: the catastrophic decline in water clarity that has overtaken Lake Victoria since the mid-20th century. Eutrophication, shoreline erosion and the resulting sedimentation and runoff have clouded a lake whose haplochromines depend on clear water and visual cues to recognise mates, and reduced transparency is documented to break down the reproductive isolation between closely related species, driving hybridisation and the collapse of distinct forms. Layered on top of this is the wider Lake Victoria haplochromine catastrophe — the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), whose population surge from the 1980s onward, together with eutrophication and fishing pressure, wiped out or drastically reduced an estimated hundreds of endemic haplochromine species. Against that backdrop, a small inshore piscivore known from scant material and last formally assessed in 2010 is genuinely difficult to evaluate, and 'Data Deficient' is an honest verdict on how little is known about whether it persists in numbers.
