Taxonomy & naming
Haplochromis rubripinnis was described in 1998 by Ole Seehausen, Erwin Lippitsch and Niels Bouton in the monograph 'Mbipi, the rock-dwelling cichlids of Lake Victoria' (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 9(2):129–228), a landmark work that erected three new genera and fifteen new species of Lake Victoria rock cichlids. The species was made the type species, by original designation, of the new genus Lithochromis Lippitsch & Seehausen, 1998 — so the name rubripinnis anchors that genus. The holotype (RMNH 33392) and an extensive paratype series are held at the Naturalis collection in Leiden (the former Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie) and at the Tanzania Fisheries Research Institute (TAFIRI); the type locality is Python Islands, between the two islands, in the Mwanza Gulf of Lake Victoria, Tanzania, at a depth of 3–4 metres. As described, Lithochromis contains three species — rubripinnis, Lithochromis rufus and Lithochromis xanthopteryx. The genus name combines Greek lithos, 'stone', for the rocky habitat, with chromis, an old fish name. There is an unresolved nomenclatural tension here that is worth stating plainly: the explosive young radiation of Lake Victoria haplochromines is notoriously hard to carve into genera, and the major databases disagree. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists the species as Lithochromis rubripinnis, whereas FishBase and the IUCN Red List retain the older, broader Haplochromis. We keep the Haplochromis heading here while noting that Lithochromis is the genus of the original description and the form most ichthyologists use for this fish.
Morphology
This is a small, slender cichlid, reaching about 4 in in standard length (the largest recorded male in FishBase). The body is fusiform — the unremarkable, gently streamlined 'normal' haplochromine shape — with meristics given in the original description as 15–17 dorsal spines and 9–10 dorsal soft rays, three anal spines and 8–10 anal soft rays, and 29–31 vertebrae. The diagnostic feature, and the source of the name, is colour rather than shape: territorial, sexually active males flush a bright red across the fins, the trait that gives the species its epithet rubripinnis ('red-finned'). As in essentially all Lake Victoria haplochromines the sexes are strongly dichromatic — flashy nuptial males versus drab, cryptically coloured females (typically a plain grey-brown) — and males carry the characteristic ocellated 'egg-dummy' spots on the anal fin that figure in spawning. Because so many mbipi species are close in body form and separable mainly on male colour and fine details of the teeth and jaws, identification in the field leans heavily on the live colours of breeding males.
Habitat
Haplochromis rubripinnis is endemic to Lake Victoria, and within that vast lake it is known only from the Mwanza Gulf at the southern end, in Tanzanian waters — a narrowly distributed rock-dweller rather than a lake-wide generalist. It is one of the 'mbipi' (the local Tanzanian name for the rock-restricted cichlids), confined to rocky substrates and most often seen in the water column immediately above them. FishBase records it from depths of 1 metre (rarely) down to at least 26 ft; on moderately steep slopes it tends to stay several metres offshore, while on steep slopes in the southern Mwanza Gulf it occurs right inshore. Lake Victoria is a large, shallow, equatorial lake whose surface waters are warm and neutral-to-alkaline. Long-term limnological work (Fryer & Iles; measurements reported by Seehausen) gives a pH range of roughly 6.9–9.0, hardness of about 2–8 °dH and conductivity near 98–145 µS/cm, with surface temperatures generally in the low-to-mid 20s °C. Compared with Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika the water is turbid, and that reduced visibility is thought to matter for these fish — colour-based mate choice and species boundaries blur where the water is murkiest.
Feeding
Unlike the dedicated epilithic algae-scrapers of the neighbouring Neochromis lineage, Haplochromis rubripinnis feeds in open water. FishBase, drawing on the original description, reports it as feeding on zooplankton and insect larvae, and notes that the way individuals turn up in gill nets indicates it often forages in small shoals. Its habit of hanging in the water column above the rocks, rather than grazing the rock surface, fits this planktivorous-insectivorous habit; FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.3. This is consistent with its placement in Lithochromis, a rock-restricted lineage of the Victoria radiation whose members are generally insectivores and small predators rather than algae specialists. In the densely packed mbipi community such fine partitioning of food and microhabitat — scrapers on the rock, plankton-pickers in the water just above it — is part of how dozens of closely related cichlids coexist on the same reefs.
Mating
Like the other rock cichlids of Lake Victoria, Haplochromis rubripinnis is polygynous: a sexually active male holds a position and courts multiple females in turn, with no lasting pair bond. The species is documented as a polygynous mouthbrooder with maternal care. Field observations at the Python Islands found large, sexually active males most commonly at intermediate depths of 10–16 ft, which is taken to indicate that courtship and spawning occur at those depths. Courtship follows the standard haplochromine pattern: the male, in his red breeding dress, displays to and leads ripe females, and the ocellated egg-spots on his anal fin play their part in the spawning sequence (see Breeding). Because so many similar mbipi species spawn side by side on the same rocks, the bright, species-specific male colours are central to keeping the species reproductively distinct — females choose by colour, and in clear water that choice is sharp.
Breeding
Haplochromis rubripinnis is a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive mode of the Lake Victoria haplochromine flock. No clutch count specific to this species has been published; in Lake Victoria rock haplochromines of its size, broods are small — typically on the order of a few dozen eggs (broadly in the ~10–40 range for fish of this body size), a fecundity figure that should be read as genus-typical rather than measured for rubripinnis. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there; the well-known egg-dummy mechanism operates here, the male's anal-fin spots prompting the female to snap at them as she collects the clutch, which helps ensure fertilisation inside or at the mouth. She carries the developing eggs and then the larvae for several weeks, releasing free-swimming fry only once they can fend for themselves, and may continue to shelter them in her mouth when threatened. All parental care is by the female alone; the male contributes nothing beyond mating. The published depth data — sexually active males concentrated at 10–16 ft — imply that brooding females pick up their clutches at those intermediate depths on the rocky slopes.
In the aquarium
Haplochromis rubripinnis is essentially a fish of the scientific and specialist-conservation world rather than the general hobby. It has no established common or trade name, is not a fixture of the ornamental market, and most aquarists will never encounter it; a handful of Lake Victoria rock cichlids circulate among dedicated keepers and conservation-minded breeders, but this narrowly distributed Mwanza Gulf endemic is rarely among them. Any keeping advice is therefore extrapolated from its biology and from the husbandry of similar mbipi haplochromines rather than from a body of first-hand aquarium experience with this species. General principles for Victorian rock cichlids apply: hard, alkaline water (pH roughly 7.5–8.5) at about 73–81 °F; a rockwork-dominated tank that provides territories and sightline breaks; and, because the males are aggressive and polygynous, a group skewed toward females so that any one female is not harassed. Their natural diet of zooplankton and insect larvae translates to small frozen and prepared foods rather than a vegetable-heavy regimen. The overriding caution with Lake Victoria haplochromines is genetic rather than logistical: the flock hybridises readily in captivity, and turbid-water species like this one have weak colour-based mate recognition, so different Victorian species (and undescribed 'sp.' forms) must be kept strictly apart to avoid producing worthless hybrids — a real concern given how much of this fauna now survives mainly in aquaria.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Haplochromis rubripinnis as Least Concern (assessed 1 April 2010, published 2016; assessors Witte, de Zeeuw and Brooks), with the population trend listed as unknown and the range given as Tanzania. That comparatively reassuring status sits against one of the most-studied ecological catastrophes in freshwater fishes. Lake Victoria's endemic haplochromine flock — several hundred species, this one among them — was devastated from the 1980s onward by the spread of the introduced Nile perch (Lates niloticus), a large predator, compounded by eutrophication and falling water clarity from human activity in the catchment, which erodes the clear-water visual conditions these colour-signalling cichlids depend on to mate and to remain distinct. Many Victorian haplochromines declined sharply or disappeared, and some persist chiefly in rocky refuges or in captive assurance populations. As a rock-restricted species Haplochromis rubripinnis may have been partly buffered by the structural cover and the predator-poorer microhabitat that reefs provide, which is consistent with its Least Concern listing — but the Least Concern category reflects current range and the absence of a documented decline, not security: the lake-wide pressures of predation, nutrient loading and turbidity remain the backdrop against which the future of every Lake Victoria endemic must be read.
