Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis sp. "Gigas Cobwe" has never been formally described and carries no authority, year, or FishBase entry. As with the genus's other “Gigas” trade forms, the name signals a resemblance to Labidochromis gigas (Lewis, 1982) — the largest described species in the genus, type locality Mbako Bay, Likoma Island — without asserting the two are conspecific. The geographic tag “Cobwe” points to a locality on the lake’s eastern shore, but the single collection record available for this article lists Mala Point as the site; trade names for undescribed Malawi cichlids do not always track perfectly with the locality later attached to a given record, and this article does not attempt to resolve that discrepancy. Like the other gigas-affiliated trade forms, it should be treated as its own population pending a formal taxonomic review, not assumed identical to "Gigas Chilumba," "Gigas Lupingu," or any other "Gigas"-tagged form from elsewhere in the lake.
Morphology
As with its gigas-affiliated relatives, no description or photographed voucher of “Gigas Cobwe” has been published. Labidochromis gigas itself is the largest species in the genus, with males reaching roughly 4.5–5 in TL and a comparatively robust, deep body built for strong rocky-shore current. Colour has not been documented for this population in the sources available for this article, and rather than guess at a pattern, it is presented here as a genus-typical, gigas-sized Labidochromis pending a proper field account. Within the genus, the gigas group is also notable for a comparatively elongated caudal peduncle and a slightly downturned mouth suited to picking at rock faces rather than the blunter, more upturned mouth of shallow surge-zone grazers, though this reflects the described species rather than a confirmed trait of the trade form itself.
Habitat
The single record available for “Gigas Cobwe” places it at Mala Point on Lake Malawi. Labidochromis gigas and its close relatives are deeper-water rock-dwellers, favouring steep boulder faces and drop-offs over the shallow surge zone used by many smaller congeners. No depth or micro-habitat data specific to this population have been published, so the figures given here reflect that deeper, gigas-typical rocky-reef envelope. Water conditions follow the lake’s standard inshore rocky-habitat profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Depth in particular tends to correlate with predation pressure and light penetration in Lake Malawi's rocky habitats, both of which shape which Labidochromis ecotype — grazer or picker — dominates a given rock face, though no site-specific study exists for this population.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for “Gigas Cobwe.” Labidochromis gigas and its relatives pick invertebrates from rock crevices and rasp aufwuchs from stone in deeper water, and this population is presented here as a genus-typical rock-associated invertivore and aufwuchs grazer in the gigas mould, without further precision. Because the gigas group grows larger than most Labidochromis, individuals of this build are thought to take proportionally larger invertebrate prey — snails, insect larvae, and small crustaceans wedged into rock crevices — alongside the aufwuchs grazing typical of the wider genus, though this is inferred from the described species rather than confirmed for this population.
Mating
No courtship or territoriality account exists for this population. Male Labidochromis gigas hold rock-face territories at depth, with no lasting pair bond and females selecting mates by moving between territories — the general pattern followed by Lake Malawi mbuna. Whether “Gigas Cobwe” matches that pattern in detail has not been documented. Deeper-water mbuna in general tend toward looser, more scattered territories than the densely packed leks seen in shallow-reef species, since suitable rock face is less crowded at depth; whether that pattern extends to this population is untested.
Breeding
“Gigas Cobwe” is presumed, like every Lake Malawi cichlid, to be a maternal mouthbrooder, with the female carrying fertilised eggs in her mouth for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size or brood duration specific to this population has been published; the gigas group is generally credited with larger clutches than smaller Labidochromis, but that is a genus-level expectation, not a documented figure for this population. Across the genus generally, brooding runs roughly three to four weeks before fry are released able to feed independently, with clutch size loosely scaling with female body size.
In the aquarium
“Gigas Cobwe” is a rare, locality-specific trade form rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. A keeper who obtained it should follow standard large-Labidochromis practice: a spacious tank with substantial rockwork, hard alkaline water around 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6, and tankmates chosen with the size this group can reach in mind. No species-specific husbandry record exists for this population, and general L. gigas practice is offered only as a starting point. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen — achieved with vigorous filtration or a powerhead — are worth prioritising given the moderate-to-deep water this genus favours in the wild, and, as with most mbuna, males can be intolerant of similarly patterned tankmates in a small aquarium.
Conservation
“Gigas Cobwe” has no IUCN Red List assessment, since formal evaluation requires a validly published name. Described L. gigas was assessed Least Concern in 2018, reflecting a broad if patchy distribution across the lake’s rocky habitats, but nothing in the sources consulted establishes whether that lower-risk picture extends to this specific population. More broadly, Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid communities face cumulative pressure from shoreline deforestation and the resulting sedimentation, plus steady demand from the aquarium trade for newly named, narrow-range forms exactly like this one — pressures well documented for the lake as a whole even where no population-specific study exists.
