Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Labidochromis sp. "Gigas Mara" has never been formally described: it has no authority, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. Its trade name follows the standard two-part convention used for undescribed Malawi cichlids close to a described relative — "Gigas" signals a resemblance to Labidochromis gigas (Lewis, 1982), the largest species in the genus, described from Mbako Bay on Likoma Island, and "Mara" gives its own locality, Mara Rocks, where the form is recorded. Mara Rocks is a well-documented Malawi cichlid locality, already carrying records for several other rock-dwelling species in the atlas, including a locality form of Aulonocara jacobfreibergi. Because confirmed L. gigas is otherwise reported chiefly from the central-lake islands, this population is treated here strictly as a resemblance-based trade label, not as evidence that it is the same species; only a formal taxonomic review could settle that question.

Morphology

Labidochromis gigas, the species this population’s trade name references, is the largest member of the genus, with males reaching roughly 4.5–5 in TL and a comparatively deep, robust body suited to strong rocky current. No description or photographed voucher of “Gigas Mara” has been published, so its precise proportions and colour cannot be confirmed here. Rather than guess at a pattern, this form is presented as a genus-typical, gigas-sized Labidochromis pending a proper field account; whether it shows the blue-grey barring typical of male L. gigas remains to be documented. Within the genus, the gigas group is also notable for a comparatively elongated caudal peduncle and a slightly downturned mouth suited to picking at rock faces rather than the blunter, more upturned mouth of shallow surge-zone grazers, though this reflects the described species rather than a confirmed trait of the trade form itself.

Habitat

The only locality on record for “Gigas Mara” is Mara Rocks on Malawi’s lake shore. Labidochromis gigas and its close relatives are rock-dwellers of comparatively deep water, typically found along steep boulder faces and drop-offs rather than the shallow surge zone favoured by smaller congeners. No depth or micro-habitat record specific to this population has been published, so the ranges given here reflect that deeper, gigas-typical rocky-reef envelope. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi’s standard inshore rocky-habitat profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Depth in particular tends to correlate with predation pressure and light penetration in Lake Malawi's rocky habitats, both of which shape which Labidochromis ecotype — grazer or picker — dominates a given rock face, though no site-specific study exists for this population.

Feeding

Labidochromis gigas and its close relatives feed by picking invertebrates from rock crevices and rasping aufwuchs from stone in deeper water, a diet favouring a comparatively large, robust jaw. No dedicated feeding study exists for “Gigas Mara”; it is presented here as a genus-typical rock-associated invertivore and aufwuchs grazer in the gigas mould, without further precision. Because the gigas group grows larger than most Labidochromis, individuals of this build are thought to take proportionally larger invertebrate prey — snails, insect larvae, and small crustaceans wedged into rock crevices — alongside the aufwuchs grazing typical of the wider genus, though this is inferred from the described species rather than confirmed for this population.

Mating

No courtship or territoriality study exists for this population. Male Labidochromis gigas defend rock-face territories at depth and, like other mbuna, form no lasting pair bond; females move between territories to select a mate. As with every Lake Malawi cichlid, “Gigas Mara” is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: a female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further role from the male. No clutch size or brood duration specific to this population has been published; the large-bodied gigas group is generally credited with somewhat bigger clutches than smaller Labidochromis, but that should not be read as a documented figure for this population. In the aquarium

“Gigas Mara” is a rarely traded, locality-specific form rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. A keeper who obtained it should follow standard practice for large Labidochromis: a spacious tank with substantial rockwork offering caves and sightline breaks, hard alkaline water around 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6, and tankmates chosen with the size this group can reach in mind. A mixed diet of plant-based flake and small meaty foods suits the gigas group’s feeding habits. No species-specific husbandry record exists for this population, and general L. gigas practice is offered here only as a starting point. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen — achieved with vigorous filtration or a powerhead — are worth prioritising given the moderate-to-deep water this genus favours in the wild, and, as with most mbuna, males can be intolerant of similarly patterned tankmates in a small aquarium.

Conservation

“Gigas Mara” has no IUCN Red List assessment; formal evaluation requires a validly published name, and none exists for this form. Described L. gigas itself was assessed Least Concern in 2018 after an earlier Vulnerable rating, reflecting a wide, if patchy, distribution across the lake’s rocky habitats. Whether a Mara Rocks population shares that lower-risk picture, or is instead more exposed to localised habitat pressure and aquarium collecting given the reef’s documented popularity for several other species, is not established by any source consulted for this article. More broadly, Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid communities face cumulative pressure from shoreline deforestation and the resulting sedimentation, plus steady demand from the aquarium trade for newly named, narrow-range forms exactly like this one — pressures well documented for the lake as a whole even where no population-specific study exists.
