Labidochromis sp. "Blue Bar" has never been formally described: it has no authority, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. It is known only by the informal trade name "Blue Bar," describing its two most obvious field characters, following the standard convention of naming undescribed Malawi cichlids for genus, "sp.", and a descriptive tag in quotation marks. Labidochromis caeruleus itself is a genuinely variable species — described from bluish-white specimens at Nkhata Bay, it splinters across the northern half of the lake into white, blue-barred, and the hobby-famous solid-yellow colour forms, all currently treated as one variable species pending molecular confirmation. "Blue Bar" sits in that same general colour space but has not been assigned to Labidochromis caeruleus or any other described species; it should be treated strictly as its own undescribed population from Namalenje Island until a taxonomic revision says otherwise.
Morphology
Labidochromis is a genus united more by jaw structure than by a single body shape or colour: its mouth carries elongated, forward-leaning outer teeth that meet at their tips like a pair of forceps, used to pick small invertebrates from rock crevices, though a few species (such as the algivorous Labidochromis gigas) depart from that pattern. "Blue Bar" is named for a blue body crossed by dark vertical bars, a combination documented in some populations of Labidochromis caeruleus — for example the powder-blue, black-barred form recorded at Lundo Island — but no detailed published account exists for the Namalenje Island population specifically, so the precise shade of blue, the number and boldness of the bars, and any dimorphism between males and females are not asserted here beyond what the trade name itself establishes.
Habitat
Labidochromis sp. "Blue Bar" is recorded from Namalenje Island, on the Malawian shore of Lake Malawi. Labidochromis as a genus is broadly a rock-dweller, occupying crevices, boulder piles, and cave systems across a range of depths depending on species, typically from the shallow surge zone down to twenty metres or more. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi's typical inshore rocky-habitat envelope: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. No depth or micro-habitat figure specific to this form has been published, so the range given here reflects the genus-typical rocky-reef envelope rather than a documented number for Namalenje Island.
Feeding
Because Labidochromis spans both invertebrate-picking and algae-grazing feeding modes depending on species, and no dedicated study exists for "Blue Bar," its exact diet cannot be stated with confidence. Most rock-dwelling Labidochromis, including Labidochromis caeruleus, use their narrow, forceps-like teeth to probe cracks and crevices for small crustaceans and insect larvae rather than rasping algae directly from the rock surface. Until a specific feeding account for this form is published, it is presented here as a genus-typical rock-associated micro-invertivore, without further precision.
Mating
No dedicated study of courtship or territoriality exists for Labidochromis sp. "Blue Bar." No clutch size or brood duration specific to this form has been published; in the closely comparable Labidochromis sp. "Hongi," aquarium observations recorded broods of roughly 7-18 fry, offered here as genus-typical context rather than a documented count for "Blue Bar."

"Blue Bar" is a rarely traded, specialist form rather than a mainstream aquarium fish; most hobbyists encountering Labidochromis will meet the widely available Labidochromis caeruleus (electric yellow) long before a locality-specific undescribed form like this one. A keeper who did obtain it should provide the standard rocky-reef Lake Malawi setup: substantial rockwork with caves and crevices, fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 72–82 °F and pH 7.7-8.6. Given the genus's mixed feeding strategies, a varied diet offering both plant-based flake and small meaty foods is a sensible default until more is known about this form's specific needs. No species-specific husbandry record for "Blue Bar" exists, and general Labidochromis practice is offered here only as a reasonable starting point.
Conservation
Labidochromis sp. "Blue Bar" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name, and none exists for this form.
