Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Alticorpus peterdaviesi is a deep-water cichlid known only from Lake Malawi. It was first described in 1973 from fish trawled off Monkey Bay, and only later moved into the deep-water genus Alticorpus. It lives on the diatom-ooze floor — the pale, fine sediment of silica skeletons that rains down into the deep basins — and appears to feed on the diatoms themselves. Like the rest of its genus, it carries the deep-water signature: enlarged head pores, an open sensing system for hunting in the cold, dim water far below the reach of divers.

Taxonomy & naming

Described in 1973 as a Trematocranus from trawls off Monkey Bay, later moved to the deep-water genus Alticorpus, which is why its authority sits in parentheses.

The naming history of Alticorpus peterdaviesi is as tangled as that of most Lake Malawi deep-water fish. Warren E. Burgess and Herbert R. Axelrod first described it in 1973 from material trawled off Monkey Bay, placing it in the genus Trematocranus; the literature has also carried it as Lethrinops peterdaviesi. It was later transferred to Alticorpus, the deep-water genus Stauffer and McKaye erected in 1988 for a cluster of deep-living haplochromines. Because the species was first named in another genus, its authorship takes parentheses — Alticorpus peterdaviesi (Burgess & Axelrod, 1973) — as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, valid in the family Cichlidae, subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae. The holotype (USNM 210639) is an adult of about 4.92 in standard length, trawled off Monkey Bay at roughly 43 fathoms, about 259 ft down.

The genus name joins the Latin altus (deep, high) with corpus (body), for the comparatively deep-bodied build of the group; Alticorpus mentale is the type species. The epithet peterdaviesi honours Peter Davies, a fish exporter on Lake Malawi, thanked by the describers for his help. The genus is small — roughly six valid Malawi endemics, among them Alticorpus mentale, Alticorpus macrocleithrum, Alticorpus profundicola and Alticorpus geoffreyi — and peterdaviesi is one of its earlier-named members, a fish that had to wait for the genus to exist before it could be placed there.

Morphology

A modest deep-water cichlid to about 5.9 in, defined not by colour but by enlarged cranial pores and lateral-line canals that open as cavities across the head.

Alticorpus peterdaviesi is a modest-sized deep-water cichlid, reaching about 5.9 in total length (FishBase); the holotype is an adult of roughly 4.92 in standard length. The body has the moderately deep, laterally compressed shape of the genus, and its median-fin counts are unremarkable for a Malawi haplochromine. What marks the fish out sits in its sensory head, not its coloration. The cranial sensory pores and lateral-line canals are enlarged, opening as conspicuous cavities across the snout, cheek and lower jaw — the hallmark of the deep-water genus, and a recurring subject in studies of cichlid sensory evolution.

The original Burgess and Axelrod account included a photograph of the holotype, though the published image was incomplete: the tips of the jaws were cropped at the edge of the magazine page, a small sign of how thinly this fish has been documented. As across the rest of the deep-water flock, there is no well-documented, vivid sexual dimorphism. The muted tones of preserved trawl specimens are most of what science has of the species — fitting for a fish that lives and breeds in dim, cold water, where bright breeding dress would do little work.

Habitat

A southern-Malawi deep endemic of the diatom-ooze floor, recorded at about 164–410 ft in cool, dim water far below the sunlit reef zone.

This is a deep-water endemic of Lake Malawi, recorded from the southern part of the lake. FishBase gives a depth range of about 164–410 ft, typically 240–299 ft, and the type material came from off Monkey Bay at around 259 ft. The shallow, sunlit reef zone that aquarists and divers know occupies roughly the top 98 ft; Alticorpus peterdaviesi lives well below that, in cool, dim water over the offshore floor.

What sets its habitat apart even within the genus is a tight tie to one substrate. The fish is reported over bottoms of diatom ooze — the fine, pale sediment of accumulated diatom silica skeletons that settles into the deep basins. This is a benthic, soft-sediment niche: it belongs to the ooze floor, not to rock, sand or weed. The water is the hard, alkaline water of Lake Malawi generally (broadly pH 7.7–8.6), but the variables that really define this fish's world are depth, low light, lower temperature, and the character of the ooze beneath it.

Feeding

A probable diatom grazer at a trophic level near 2.0, working the soft ooze floor with help from the genus's enlarged mechanosensory head pores.

Alticorpus peterdaviesi is reported as a probable diatom feeder, and FishBase assigns it a very low trophic level of about 2.0 — among the lowest in the genus, and consistent with an animal that grazes fine diatomaceous sediment rather than hunting larger prey. Its tie to the diatom-ooze floor and this low trophic figure point the same way: to a fish that works the soft surface layer for diatoms and the micro-material around them.

The enlarged head pores are the functional centrepiece of the genus's deep-water lifestyle. In dim or dark water, an expanded mechanosensory lateral-line system lets the fish sense faint water movements close to the bottom, where vision is of limited use. Gut-content work specific to peterdaviesi is thin — like most of the deep Malawi fauna, it is known mainly from trawl surveys rather than feeding studies — but a diatom-ooze habitat, a trophic level near 2.0, and the sensory build of the genus all read as a low-on-the-food-web, sediment-associated feeder.

Mating

Courtship is unobserved in this below-diving-depth fish; by the Malawi flock's pattern it is almost certainly a brief-pairing polygynous spawner of the dark ooze floor.

Courtship in Alticorpus peterdaviesi has not been watched directly, because the fish lives below diving depth and is known chiefly from trawl catches and preserved specimens. What can be said comes from its strong resemblance to the rest of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock, almost all of which are polygynous maternal mouthbrooders whose sexes meet only briefly to spawn. The absence of obvious breeding coloration in peterdaviesi and its congeners fits a fish that pairs in water too dark for the visual displays that drive courtship among shallow sand- and rock-dwellers.

Rather than the bower-building and colour-flashing of a shallow hap, the realistic picture is of a deep-water fish spawning on or near the soft ooze floor — males most likely competing for and defending temporary spawning sites in the gloom while females choose among them. The specifics of timing, site and display remain undescribed; they are inferred here from the genus and the wider flock, not recorded for the species.

Breeding

Treated as a maternal mouthbrooder like the rest of the Malawi radiation, but with no clutch, egg or fry data recorded for the species itself.

Alticorpus peterdaviesi is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, in keeping with its genus and with essentially the entire Malawi haplochromine radiation. After spawning, the female is presumed to take the eggs into her mouth and carry the developing eggs and larvae until the young are free-swimming, then release a small brood of relatively large, well-provisioned fry — the standard Malawi strategy, carried out here in deep, cold, lightless water rather than on a sunlit reef.

No clutch counts, egg sizes or fry-development data specific to peterdaviesi have been published; the deep-water Alticorpus are known reproductively, where at all, from trawl-based fishery biology rather than from breeding observation. Related deep congeners such as Alticorpus macrocleithrum have been shown by South West Arm trawl work to spawn seasonally and to carry moderate clutches on the order of a hundred to a few hundred eggs, and peterdaviesi most plausibly follows a broadly similar pattern — but for this species specifically, the early life history remains to be documented.

In the aquarium

Not an aquarium fish: a deep-trawl species that suffers the pressure change of the haul and needs cold, dark, ooze-floored conditions no display tank provides.

For practical purposes this is not an aquarium fish. Alticorpus peterdaviesi is a deep-water specialist taken incidentally by demersal trawls, not by ornamental collectors working the shallow reefs, and it plays no meaningful part in the hobby trade. FishBase's broad 'aquarium: commercial' tag — applied widely across Malawi cichlids — overstates how available or keepable a fish like this really is. An animal adapted to life at 230–295 ft is in real trouble on the way up: the pressure change of a trawl haul is hard on a deep-bodied cichlid, and even a healthy specimen would expect the cool, dark, ooze-floored conditions that a bright, warm Malawi display tank cannot give it.

The useful way to place it is as the deep-water counterpart to the haps and peacocks that hobbyists actually keep. To understand the full Lake Malawi radiation, you have to read Alticorpus as the chapter that unfolds off the bottom of the depth chart — the lineage that colonised the cold, dim, soft-floored deep and rebuilt its sensory system to live there. Alticorpus peterdaviesi, a diatom-ooze specialist with a long nomenclatural history, belongs on a serious keeper's mental map of the lake, even though it will almost certainly never belong in their aquarium.

Conservation

Listed Least Concern as a widely distributed deep endemic, but under-monitored and squarely in the path of the south lake's demersal trawl fishery.

The IUCN Red List assesses Alticorpus peterdaviesi as Least Concern. The reasoning follows the pattern applied to the widespread deep Malawi endemics: the species is confined to a single lake but distributed through its deep southern waters, so localised pressures are unlikely to threaten the whole population — even though population data are essentially absent and the deep lake is very hard to survey.

The pressure most relevant to a deep-bottom fish is the demersal trawl fishery that works the south of the lake for food fish. Unlike shallow reef cichlids caught incidentally by hook-and-line, offshore Alticorpus sit squarely in the trawls' path, and demersal trawling bears down hardest on the slow-to-survey, slow-recovering deep communities that are least understood. A fish tied as tightly to one substrate as the diatom-ooze floor is, in principle, sensitive to anything that alters that sediment — and changes to the deep lake sit within the broader strain on the whole Lake Malawi system, from fishing pressure and catchment sedimentation to a warming, more strongly stratified water column that can shrink the habitable deep layer. The honest reading is that peterdaviesi is secure on paper today but genuinely under-monitored, with the deep trawl fishery and the long-term health of the lake's deep water the things to watch.
