Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Longipinnis Ntekete" has no formal scientific description, no describing author, and no entry in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes; the quoted name is an informal field/trade label. It was documented in some detail in the first volume of Konings’ Cichlids Yearbook, which reported that the form resembles the described species Lethrinops longipinnis in general appearance but differs in having a longer snout, a shallower body, and shorter pectoral fins — L. longipinnis itself being known only from the southern part of the lake, well south of Ntekete on the east coast. That combination of similarity and measurable difference is exactly the kind of population taxonomists flag as worth formal study rather than lumping outright, but no description has followed in the decades since. The genus Lethrinops was erected by Regan in 1922 and substantially revised by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989.
Morphology
This form reaches an unusually large size for the genus: breeding males were recorded at up to roughly 7.5 in, distinctly larger than the 4–5 in typical of many Lethrinops. Relative to Lethrinops longipinnis, the species it most resembles, this population has a longer snout, a shallower (less deep-bodied) profile, and shorter pectoral fins. Early field notes describe breeding males as showing striking nuptial colouration, though the specific pattern of colours was not spelled out in the source consulted here, so no particular hue should be assumed beyond what is documented. Females were reported as plain and solitary, foraging away from the nest sites the males construct.
Within Lethrinops as a whole, species divide broadly by mouth angle and snout profile — some with a steep, near-vertical oral opening suited to picking at a narrow patch of sand, others with a shallower, more forward-pointing mouth suited to sweeping a wider area — a distinction Eccles and Trewavas relied on heavily in their 1989 revision. As in most Lake Malawi haplochromines, males typically grow somewhat larger than females of the same age, and the size gap often becomes more pronounced once a male holds a breeding territory.
Habitat
The only documented locality is shallow water on the east coast of Lake Malawi near the village of Ntekete, where the species was found only in small numbers — not a locally abundant population. Breeding males and their nests were recorded in 7–10 ft of water over sandy bottom, a notably shallow zone compared with many deeper-water Lethrinops. Water conditions follow the lake norm for shallow sand habitat: roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6, hard and alkaline.
Lethrinops as a genus is unusually finely partitioned by depth across Lake Malawi's open-sand and transitional habitats, with different species — and, as here, different named forms — occupying overlapping but distinguishable depth bands along the same stretch of shoreline, a pattern regarded as a major axis of the genus's diversification alongside colour and mouth shape. The lake itself is a large, deep rift lake with a stable thermocline; below roughly 131–164 ft the water turns anoxic, so no fish, Lethrinops included, live below that zone regardless of locality.
Feeding
Like other Lethrinops, this form is expected to be a sand-sifting invertivore, taking mouthfuls of sand and filtering them through comb-like gill rakers to strain out chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods and other benthic micro-invertebrates before expelling the spent sand. Its oblique, protrusible mouth follows the standard genus build for this kind of close sand work. No diet study specific to this population has been published; the account here follows the documented feeding mode of the genus.
In the wild, sand-sifting Lethrinops rarely forage alone. Loose, mixed-species aggregations combining several sand-dwelling genera — Lethrinops, Aulonocara, Taeniolethrinops and various Copadichromis — are commonly reported moving together across open sand, each targeting a broadly overlapping but not identical set of invertebrate prey depending on mouth angle and gape. Feeding activity peaks in daylight, when the fish can see prey movement in the substrate, and largely stops after dark, when sand-dwelling cichlids settle into looser aggregations to avoid nocturnal predators such as catfish.
Mating
Breeding males build a nest unique among Malawian haplochromines for its scale and construction: a large crater dug into the sandy bottom, surrounded by an elevated wall built from five to eight large turrets roughly 12 in high and about 19.5 in wide at the base, giving the complete structure a diameter of about two metres. This "sand-castle" nest was observed being actively defended by breeding males in November 1990. The only other Malawian species reported to build turrets around its spawning site is Lethrinops auritus, the smallest member of the genus — but that species builds in muddy habitat, heaping small turrets in a circle around a central mound with a shallow spawning pit alongside, a markedly different structure from the dug crater and tall turret wall built by this form. Females forage alone on the sand and are drawn to a male’s nest to spawn, the standard lek-like arrangement of the genus.
Breeding
Lethrinops sp. "Longipinnis Ntekete" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every member of its genus. Spawning takes place within or beside the male’s crater-and-turret nest; the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further care from the male. The elaborate scale of the nest suggests considerable male investment in a fixed spawning site, in contrast to Lethrinops species that use a simple scrape or no structure at all. Brooding duration and clutch size specific to this form were not reported in the source consulted; genus-typical figures — roughly three to four weeks of brooding and clutches of a few dozen eggs — are the best available estimate.
In the aquarium
This form is rarely available in the hobby, reflecting both its small recorded population and its narrow, specific locality. Its large adult size for the genus and its documented sand-castle nest-building behaviour argue for a spacious tank with a deep, soft sand bed and generous open floor space — at least 59 in long if the aim is to give a male room to construct anything resembling his wild nest, though full-scale bower construction of the kind recorded in the lake has not been documented in home aquaria. Kept more modestly, it should still be treated as a peaceful, sand-associated cichlid best combined with similarly non-aggressive tankmates rather than mbuna.
Water should mirror Lake Malawi conditions: 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, moderately hard to hard, with a fine sand substrate essential for both foraging and any nest-building activity. Diet should include fine sinking pellets and small live or frozen invertebrates offered over the sand.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for this form, and none can until it receives a formal description. The original field report already noted it was found only in small numbers at a single shallow locality on the east coast, a combination — narrow range, low recorded abundance — that would draw conservation attention if the population were formally assessed. No survey data since the original 1990 observations were reported in the sources consulted, so its current status is genuinely unknown rather than simply unassessed on paper.
More broadly, Lake Malawi's inshore and demersal fisheries have been managed since the 1990s through a co-management system built around local Beach Village Committees working alongside Malawi's Department of Fisheries, an effort to curb the decline recorded in commercial catch data for many demersal haplochromine stocks since the 1980s. Sand-dwelling genera such as Lethrinops are affected by that decline as bycatch of gear targeting chambo (Oreochromis) and utaka (Copadichromis), even where, as here, no species-level data exists to quantify the effect on a single named population.
