Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Lethrinops micrentodon is a compact, sand-dwelling haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, best known for its remarkably minute inner teeth — the very trait that gave it its name in Charles Tate Regan's 1922 monograph on the lake's cichlid fauna. It works the soft-bottom zone at moderate to considerable depths, scooping mouthfuls of sediment to strain out buried diatoms and small invertebrates. Despite its plainness outside of breeding season, the courting male becomes a thing of quiet colour, defending a shallow sand nest near rocks while females mill nearby in loose groups — a lek dynamic played out in the open half-light of Lake Malawi's sandy deeps.

Taxonomy & naming

Lethrinops micrentodon was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1922 in his monograph 'The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyassa', published in the Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London (1921, pt 4, no. 36, pp. 675–727). The original combination was Haplochromis micrentodon, reflecting Regan's practice at the time of placing many Lake Malawi sand-cichlids under Haplochromis pending a finer classification. The type locality is given as Lake Malawi (then called Lake Nyasa), southeastern Africa, with no narrower site specified in the original description; the lectotype, BMNH 1921.9.6.189, was selected by Eccles and Lewis in their 1977 revision of the genus Lethrinops. The species was transferred to Lethrinops by Eccles and Lewis (1977) and has remained there ever since — confirmed as valid by Eccles and Trewavas (1989), Maréchal (1991) and Konings (2016) — a placement endorsed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as of May 2026. At no point has it been placed in Tramitichromis or any other segregate genus; it is a core Lethrinops in all modern treatments. Eccles and Trewavas's 1989 revision is also the paper that carved two new genera, Taeniolethrinops and Tramitichromis, out of the old Lethrinops — a reorganisation that left micrentodon's own placement untouched but reshaped the genus around it. The species belongs to the tribe Haplochromini within Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae, the same tribe that encompasses all of Lake Malawi's haplochromine flock. Lethrinops as a genus is a large assemblage of sediment-sifting cichlids endemic to the Lake Malawi system, with some 22 or more described species and numerous undescribed morphotypes; the genus boundary with Tramitichromis and Taeniolethrinops has long been acknowledged as taxonomically fluid, and morphological boundaries among the deeper-dwelling species remain imperfectly resolved. Ad Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2) groups micrentodon with two other deep-living, diatom-specialist congeners, L. microdon and L. stridei, as an ecologically distinct trio within the genus (see Feeding). In the aquarium trade, Lethrinops micrentodon is encountered mainly under the trade label 'Lethrinops micrentodon Makokola Reef', a form described by Baasch (1992) and geographically restricted to a narrow strip of the SE Arm's western coast; the relationship of this trade form to the broader species is discussed in Habitat, below. Konings records that this Makokola Reef population had, as of his writing, been exported into the hobby only once, in spring 1990.

Morphology

Lethrinops micrentodon is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed cichlid with a relatively small, rounded head and a short snout typical of the shallower-skulled Lethrinops. FishBase records the maximum total length as 4.5 in TL — the figure drawn from Maréchal's 1991 CLOFFA treatment — while the IUCN assessment cites field observations of adults reaching roughly 6 in TL; the Makokola Reef trade form is reported by Prof. George Turner to grow to around 5 in TL in the wild, with aquarium females at 4 in already ripe. These figures are not contradictory: they reflect different populations and measurement standards, and the useful working figure is approximately 4.5–6 in for a full-grown adult. The species can be identified by its relatively few lower gillrakers (13–17 in the Makokola form), deep body, proportionally large eye — probably an adaptation to the reduced light at its preferred depths — and the absence of a midlateral spot. Outside of the breeding season both sexes are silvery to pale brownish, unremarkable in overall pattern. The defining character that Regan used to name the species is dental: the inner teeth of the lower jaw are minute and almost invisible, a reduction that earned the epithet micrentodon (see Taxonomy & naming). Sexual dimorphism is present but primarily expressive: breeding males develop colourful nuptial dress (see Mating), while non-breeding fish of both sexes are difficult to distinguish at a glance. Females are generally smaller and less boldly coloured.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Lake Malawi, the large rift-valley lake shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania, and has a lake-wide distribution in suitable sandy or mixed soft-bottom habitat. FishBase records the depth range as 59–105 ft, and IUCN data (based on trawl and survey records) extend this to 82–427 ft, indicating that the species can occupy a wide bathymetric band — from the upper edge of the intermediate zone well into the deep sandy shelf. The IUCN assessment notes that population occurrence 'may be dependent on the availability of a special type of diatom', a dependency also flagged by FishBase (Ref. 5595), meaning that the species' distribution within the lake is not merely a depth contour but is shaped by the patchwork of productive benthic microhabitats. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2) places micrentodon among a small group of deep-living Lethrinops specialised on bottom-settled diatoms, alongside L. microdon and L. stridei; most specimens of the three are collected below about 164 ft, and all three appear restricted to the southern part of the lake. The Makokola Reef trade form, documented in detail by Turner (malawicichlids.com, citing Baasch 1992), appears to be restricted to a 22-km strip of the SE Arm's western coast between Maldeco and Nkhudzi Bay at depths of 79–197 ft, with ripe males nesting at 98–115 ft near Makokola Reef. Konings independently records the exported population as collected south of Boadzulu Island at Makokola Reef, at a depth of 118 ft, on the border of sand and rock — consistent with, and slightly more precise than, Turner's broader range. Whether this represents a distinct genetic unit or a geographic morph of a lake-wide species has not been resolved to publication standard. The surrounding lake water is warm, hard and alkaline: Lake Malawi's surface and mid-depth waters typically run 75–82 °F with pH approximately 7.7–8.6, reflecting carbonate-dominated geology. Precise hardness data for the species' typical depth range are not published in the primary literature; habitat-typical figures are given here as a working envelope, flagged as inferred from lake-wide chemistry rather than species-specific measurement.

Feeding

Lethrinops micrentodon is a benthic, sand-sifting invertivore and diatom feeder. FishBase summarizes the diet as 'mainly benthic diatoms' (Ref. 267) with a note that occurrence in any given area may be tied to diatom availability. The IUCN Habitat and Ecology section elaborates: the species 'feeds on diatoms, which it scoops from the substrate [and] also feeds in the open water on plankton when available.' The feeding mechanism is the genus-typical sand-sifting technique: the fish drop the protrusible jaws to the sediment surface, take in a mouthful of substrate and water, and sort the edible fraction — diatoms, small crustaceans, chironomid larvae and other meiobenthos — through the gill rakers before expelling clean sand. FishBase places the genus at trophic level approximately 2.0, consistent with a primary consumer feeding very low on the food web, predominantly on algae (diatoms) and microinvertebrates. The opportunistic switch to open-water plankton feeding when diatom blooms occur in the water column shows that the species is a flexible opportunist rather than a strict substrate forager, tracking resource pulses both horizontally (following diatom patches across the lake floor) and vertically (rising toward productive surface plankton).

Mating

Like virtually all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Lethrinops micrentodon is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder whose courtship unfolds on the open sand in a lek-like pattern. The IUCN assessment records that 'breeding males occur from November to February' and are 'territorial, defending a small and shallow nest in the sand close to rocks', while 'females occur in small groups close to where the males have their territories' — the classic lek-aggregation structure of shallow-nesting sand-cichlids. For the Makokola Reef trade form, Turner's account notes that aquarium males construct a large pit of up to 35.5 in in diameter with a small spawning cone in the centre, rather than the shallow scrape described in IUCN field notes, which may reflect aquarium substrate conditions. Ad Konings' own aquarium observation (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2) corroborates this in detail: a territorial male demarcated his ground with a low sand wall a few centimetres high, shaped as a quarter-circle bower in a tank corner with a radius of about 17.5 in — which, given a full circle's worth of open floor, would form a bower close to a metre across, matching Turner's 35.5 in figure — with a small cone of fine sand built at the centre as the actual spawning site. Nuptial males develop a colourful livery; the specific palette for micrentodon in wild caught fish photographed by Martin Genner and identified by Ad Konings (CRC, 2022) shows the species' characteristic breeding coloration. Intraspecific aggression is present but managed through the spacing of territories, and multiple males can hold their grounds simultaneously in suitable habitat. On breeding season, the sources pull in different directions: the IUCN's November–February window above rests on field data, but Konings, writing from his own aquarium colony, noted that it was not established whether the species breeds year-round or seasonally in the wild — his captive fish bred continuously without pause, though he cautioned that continuous captive breeding is also known in other Lethrinops species that are seasonal breeders in the lake. Continuous captive spawning is therefore not good evidence against a wild breeding season, and the IUCN's field-based Nov–Feb window is treated here as the better-supported figure.

Breeding

Reproduction follows the maternal-mouthbrooding pattern universal to Lake Malawi haplochromines. After courtship on the male's defended sand nest, the female picks up the fertilized eggs and incubates them buccally; the male provides no parental care beyond territory defense during courtship and spawning. Breeding season is November to February, aligned with the warmer, more productive wet-season months when diatom productivity and invertebrate biomass are elevated (see the caveat on breeding-season certainty in Mating, above). Clutch size in the Makokola Reef trade form has been documented by Turner and independently by Konings: females of around 4 in TL produce approximately 50–60 fry in captivity, a modest but well-guarded clutch consistent with the relatively small adult size. No independent published clutch counts exist for wild Lethrinops micrentodon sensu lato; the 50–60 figure from the Makokola form aquarium data is currently the best available reference for the species. Fry are released small — Konings describes them as very small at release — but grow quickly afterward; the female provides no further care after release. Konings also records that males begin colouring up at around 2 in and reach a maximum of roughly 5 in, matching the upper end of the size range given in Morphology, above.

In the aquarium

Lethrinops micrentodon is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade. When it does appear it is usually sold under the locality label 'Lethrinops micrentodon Makokola Reef', a geographically restricted form from the SE Arm's western coast. Keepers interested in the species should be prepared for a fish that is genuinely uncommon in circulation and may require sourcing from specialist Malawi breeders or cichlid societies rather than a local fish store. That said, the husbandry requirements are straightforward for anyone experienced with Lake Malawi haplochromines.

The most important hardware decision is the substrate. Lethrinops micrentodon is an obligate sand-sifter: its entire feeding behaviour — and much of its psychological wellbeing — depends on being able to mouthful the bottom and sort edible material through its gill rakers. A deep bed of fine, smooth lake or pool sand (ideally 3–4.5 in depth) is not optional; coarse gravel or bare glass will suppress natural behaviour and may result in a fish that refuses to feed properly. Open sandy floor space is equally important; resist the temptation to fill the tank with rockwork. A modest pile of rocks in one or two corners provides sight-line breaks and surface area for biological filtration, but the majority of the footprint should be unobstructed sand. Konings gives 39.5 in as a workable minimum for a single breeding male and a small group of females, provided the substrate is generous; this atlas prefers the more conservative figure of at least 47 in in length (50 US gal or more) for a colony of one male and two or three females, with 59 in or longer markedly better for settling territorial dynamics at breeding time.

Water chemistry should replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.8–8.6, moderately hard to hard water (general hardness 10–20 °dGH, carbonate hardness 6–10 °dKH). These parameters are interchangeable with those used for other SE Arm haplochromines. Proprietary Malawi buffer salts are a reliable way to hold the chemistry stable; avoid letting pH drift below 7.5. Good oxygenation and efficient mechanical filtration matter because a sand-sifting fish continuously stirs up fine particles — a filter intake guard or coarse foam pre-filter prevents sand ingestion by the impeller.

Lethrinops micrentodon is a peaceful cichlid by Malawi haplochromine standards and should not be housed with aggressive mbuna (rock-dwelling cichlids such as Melanochromis, Labeotropheus or boisterous Pseudotropheus species), which will harry it relentlessly. Suitable tankmates are other calm, open-water or sandy-substrate haplochromines of similar size: fellow Lethrinops, Copadichromis, or gentle Aulonocara species at roughly the same body size. Avoid packing the tank with too many species; males will establish breeding territories on the sand and need room to display without constant interspecific conflicts. Avoid any fish that competes directly for the sand or that has a reputation for bullying passive tank mates.

Breeding is achievable in a well-set-up colony. Males in breeding condition excavate a sand bower — a shallow depression or small pit — and display vigorously to females. Spawning follows quickly if the female is receptive; she picks up the clutch (approximately 50–60 eggs in the Makokola form) and holds them buccally for three to four weeks. Mouthbrooding females should not be stripped early unless there is a specific welfare reason; allow the female to spit freely or hold to term in a separate, quiet container. The most commonly reported keeper mistake with this and other Lake Malawi sand-cichlids is Malawi bloat — a potentially fatal digestive condition linked to inappropriate feeding (too much protein-rich, fatty food) and high nitrates. Feed a varied diet weighted toward high-quality cichlid pellets and spirulina-based foods, supplement occasionally with frozen daphnia or cyclops, and keep nitrates below 20 mg/l through regular partial water changes. Avoid heavy feeding of beef heart, bloodworm, or other high-fat animal protein.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Lethrinops micrentodon as Data Deficient (DD), assessed 22 May 2018 by Phiri, Snoeks and Kanyerere (with an erratum correction published in 2019; e.T61044A148652144). The Data Deficient designation does not mean the species is secure — it means the data are insufficient to apply a category. The IUCN justification is stark: fishery research trawl catch records in the southern lake arm showed a decline of more than 70% during the 1990s; the only post-2000 trawl survey in the southern lake (2016) did not record the species at all; and the species was also absent from the 2007 SE Arm survey. The CRC notes that 'since 2000 the only research trawl outside of the southern arms of the lake in 2016 did not record the species.' The primary threat is demersal trawling, which sweeps the same soft-bottom zone this species inhabits; no conservation actions are currently in place. The IUCN previously assessed the species as Endangered (EN) in 2006 before downgrading to DD in 2018 on the grounds that survey coverage outside the southern arm remains too sparse to confirm a lake-wide decline. Population trend is listed as Unknown. Lake Malawi faces additional mounting pressures from catchment deforestation and sedimentation, eutrophication near populated shores, artisanal fisheries pressure, and documented warming trends in lake surface temperatures — all of which affect the benthic productivity and diatom-based food web on which this species depends.
