Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Silver Crescent" carries no describing author and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; it is a hobby and locality-database designation, not a validated name. Regan erected Lethrinops in 1922 for a group of sand-sifting Lake Malawi cichlids typified by Chromis lethrinus Günther, 1894, and the genus has since grown into a taxonomically difficult assemblage of roughly two dozen described species and many more undescribed forms, most separated by breeding-male colour rather than by measurable body proportions. A 2000 doctoral revision by Benjamin Ngatunga examined the shallow-water members of Lethrinops and its close relatives Tramitichromis and Taeniolethrinops, but did not formally treat every hobby form now in circulation, and "Silver Crescent" remains outside any published taxonomic account. The name itself describes a pale, curved marking taken to be diagnostic in the field; which described species, if any, it is most easily confused with has not been documented.
Morphology
"Silver Crescent" is expected to share the standard Lethrinops build: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, a pointed head, and protrusible jaws for working sand. As the trade name implies, its most distinctive feature is a pale, crescent-shaped mark, most likely across the flank or opercle, though the exact placement and the sex or condition in which it is best expressed have not been described in any source consulted here. Genus-typical size for medium-bodied Lethrinops runs to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length; no validated measurement has been published for this form specifically. Beyond the namesake marking, males in breeding colour and drab, silvery females and non-breeding males are assumed to follow the usual Lethrinops pattern of dichromatism.
Habitat
Tchinga Reef sits on Lake Malawi's northern west shore. As a "reef" it is presumably a rocky outcrop, an unusual setting for a genus that feeds almost exclusively over open sand — but Lethrinops recorded at rock-associated localities are typically working the sand pockets and adjoining open bottom around the reef rather than the rock face itself, a pattern well documented for other sand-sifting haplochromines collected near mbuna reefs. Depth has not been documented for this specific record; genus-typical Lethrinops on comparable mixed sand-and-rock ground occupy roughly 20–66 ft. Like other sand-dwelling haplochromines, the fish likely spends daylight hours foraging over open substrate in loose, mixed-species aggregations and retreats into the sand itself after dark, a widely documented anti-predator strategy among Lake Malawi's sand community. The surrounding water is characteristically clear, reflecting the lake's low nutrient load and permanent stratification below roughly 656 ft.
Feeding
Feeding is presumed to follow the standard Lethrinops sand-sifting mode: mouthfuls of substrate taken from open patches near the reef, worked in the buccal cavity, and expelled through the gills while chironomid larvae, ostracods and other small invertebrates are retained. No feeding observations specific to "Silver Crescent" have been published. This sand-sifting strategy, visible as a distinctive working motion of the mouth as sand passes through and out the gill slits, is one of the classic trophic specialisations of the Malawi cichlid radiation, first systematically described by Fryer and Iles in their 1972 survey of the lake's haplochromine feeding guilds. Feeding is a daylight activity, with fish often revisiting the same stretch of productive sand repeatedly over a day.
Mating
Breeding behaviour has not been directly documented for this form. Lethrinops as a genus breed on a lek system, with males holding small sand territories — sometimes maintained as a shallow bower — that females visit and assess before spawning. There is no basis in the available record for expecting "Silver Crescent" to differ from this pattern. The egg-dummy mechanism common to Malawi haplochromine mouthbrooders is presumed to operate here as elsewhere in the genus: egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin mimic eggs, prompting the spawning female to mouth at them and draw in sperm to fertilise the eggs already held in her mouth. Lek sites for sand-dwelling haplochromines are typically loose, temporary aggregations of male territories rather than fixed, permanent arenas, and their exact location can shift from season to season as sand conditions change.
Breeding
As in all Lethrinops, reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding: after spawning at the male's territory, the female carries the fertilised eggs and developing fry in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, unassisted by the male, before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; genus-typical broods run to a few dozen eggs. At typical Lake Malawi temperatures the brooding period runs close to three weeks, during which the female eats little or nothing; fry are released well developed and immediately capable of independent foraging and shelter-seeking. Aquarium keepers working with related Lethrinops report that a female nearing release of fry becomes noticeably reclusive, spending more time hidden and less time foraging in the open, a pattern presumed to hold for this form as well.
In the aquarium
This is a scarce, specialist-import form rather than a routinely stocked one. Aquarium requirements follow standard Lethrinops practice: a long tank with a deep, fine sand substrate, hard alkaline water reflecting Lake Malawi chemistry, and calmer tankmates, since Lethrinops feed more deliberately than mbuna and lose out to more aggressive rock-dwellers at feeding time. Kept as a single male with several females, in line with its lek-breeding biology, it settles best and shows its namesake marking most clearly under stable, low-aggression conditions. An aquarium of 47 in or more in length gives the fish room to forage naturally over sand, and a varied diet of sinking pellets plus occasional live or frozen invertebrate foods suits its sand-sifting feeding style well.
Conservation
As an undescribed form, "Silver Crescent" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and has no conservation status. Malawi's northern lake shoreline has seen increasing settlement and small-scale fishing pressure in recent decades, and sand-dwelling haplochromine communities across the lake are exposed to trawling and sedimentation, but no population information specific to this form or to Tchinga Reef is available. This is a structural gap in Malawi cichlid conservation more generally: undescribed, single-locality forms cannot receive an IUCN assessment without a formal description, regardless of how genuinely restricted their range may actually be.
