Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Yellow Chin" has no describing author and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; it is a hobby designation used informally by collectors and the malawi.si database. The genus Lethrinops, erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1922 with Chromis lethrinus Günther, 1894 as its type species, is a large and taxonomically difficult group of sand-sifting cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, containing roughly two dozen formally described species and many more undescribed forms told apart largely by breeding-male colour. The South East Arm has produced an unusually large number of such colour-named Lethrinops forms — "Yellow Chin" among them — reflecting both the area's high species diversity and the intensity of hobby collecting there since the 1980s. No described species is identified in the sources consulted here as its closest formal relative.
Morphology
"Yellow Chin" is expected to share the general Lethrinops body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body with a pointed head and protrusible jaws adapted to working sand. As the name implies, breeding males are reported to show yellow colouring localised to the chin or lower jaw, a marking that would help distinguish this form in the field from similarly built, otherwise plain Lethrinops sharing the same stretch of sand. The extent of the yellow and the colour of the rest of the breeding dress have not been formally described. Genus-typical size for medium Lethrinops runs to roughly 4.5–5.5 in total length; no confirmed figure exists for this form specifically. Females and non-breeding males are assumed silvery and largely unmarked.
Habitat
The South East Arm holds extensive open sand and mixed sand-and-rubble bottom supporting one of the densest sand-dwelling haplochromine communities in the lake. "Yellow Chin" was recorded from this general area; its specific depth range has not been documented, but genus-typical Lethrinops here occupy roughly 26–82 ft, foraging over open sand outside the breeding season. Like other sand-dwelling haplochromines, the fish likely spends daylight hours foraging over open substrate in loose, mixed-species aggregations and retreats into the sand itself after dark, a widely documented anti-predator strategy among Lake Malawi's sand community. The surrounding water is characteristically clear, reflecting the lake's low nutrient load and permanent stratification below roughly 656 ft.
Feeding
Feeding is presumed to follow the standard Lethrinops sand-sifting mode, with mouthfuls of substrate worked in the buccal cavity and expelled through the gills while small invertebrates such as chironomid larvae and ostracods are retained. No feeding study specific to this form has been published. This sand-sifting strategy, visible as a distinctive working motion of the mouth as sand passes through and out the gill slits, is one of the classic trophic specialisations of the Malawi cichlid radiation, first systematically described by Fryer and Iles in their 1972 survey of the lake's haplochromine feeding guilds. Feeding is a daylight activity, with fish often revisiting the same stretch of productive sand repeatedly over a day.
Mating
Breeding behaviour has not been directly documented for "Yellow Chin". Lethrinops as a genus breed on a lek system, males holding small sand territories that females visit and assess before spawning, with male colour — here, presumably the yellow chin patch — serving as a key signal in that assessment. The egg-dummy mechanism common to Malawi haplochromine mouthbrooders is presumed to operate here as elsewhere in the genus: egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin mimic eggs, prompting the spawning female to mouth at them and draw in sperm to fertilise the eggs already held in her mouth. Lek sites for sand-dwelling haplochromines are typically loose, temporary aggregations of male territories rather than fixed, permanent arenas, and their exact location can shift from season to season as sand conditions change.
Breeding
Reproduction is maternal mouthbrooding, as in all Lethrinops: after spawning at the male's territory, the female carries the fertilised eggs and developing fry in her mouth, unassisted, for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming young. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; genus-typical broods run to a few dozen eggs. At typical Lake Malawi temperatures the brooding period runs close to three weeks, during which the female eats little or nothing; fry are released well developed and immediately capable of independent foraging and shelter-seeking. Aquarium keepers working with related Lethrinops report that a female nearing release of fry becomes noticeably reclusive, spending more time hidden and less time foraging in the open, a pattern presumed to hold for this form as well.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist-import form rather than a routinely available one. Standard Lethrinops care applies: a long tank with a deep, fine sand substrate for natural foraging, hard alkaline water reflecting Lake Malawi chemistry, and calmer tankmates, since Lethrinops are outcompeted for food by more aggressive rock-dwelling mbuna. A single male with several females, in line with lek-breeding biology, tends to give the best results. An aquarium of 47 in or more in length gives the fish room to forage naturally over sand, and a varied diet of sinking pellets plus occasional live or frozen invertebrate foods suits its sand-sifting feeding style well.
Conservation
As an undescribed form, "Yellow Chin" has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no conservation status. The South East Arm supports a broad and diverse sand-dwelling haplochromine community that, like the rest of the lake, faces pressure from inshore trawling and sedimentation, but no population data specific to this form are available. This is a structural gap in Malawi cichlid conservation more generally: undescribed, single-locality forms cannot receive an IUCN assessment without a formal description, regardless of how genuinely restricted their range may actually be. Any assessment of this form's status would first require a formal taxonomic description, a step that has not been undertaken for the great majority of undescribed Malawi cichlid forms known to the hobby.
